The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region
The Costa Blanca is deservedly one of Spain's premier tourist destinations, with its beautiful beaches, warm climate, fun tourist resorts and proximity to fascinating cities such as Valencia and Alicante. One of the beauties of the Costa Blanca is that it offers something for everybody, whether you are looking for attractions aimed specifically at tourists (such as the popular resort of Benidorm) or for smaller towns and villages offering a more authentic taste of Spanish life.
Denia and Javea are historical towns each situated at the base of the Montgo national park, Javea on the south side while Denia is to the north. Javea has a market in the old town every Thursday morning, and also has many Fiestas throughout the year. As well as the old town, there is the port area with a range of restaurants well worth a visit, which is connected with the Arenal sandy beach area via a stretch of rocky beach.
The Arenal is a safe sandy bay fringed with palm trees. It has a long promenade lined with restaurants and bars of differing nationalities overlooking the sea, and on a summer's evening is a hive of activity with holidaymakers and locals alike. An added attraction are the many street vendors selling handicrafts, paintings, caricatures and so on.
The views of the Montgo from the south side of the bay at sunset are really stunning. It is known as Elephant mountain because it looks like an elephant with it's trunk spreading down to the sea. There is a cave on the side of the mountain which looks like an elephant's eye, and when the sun is setting the whole mountain turns pink. You also have a brilliant view of the Montgo from our bedroom terrace as well as the bathroom window.
Denia is a very cosmopolitan and quite sophisticated town with some very tasteful shops. It is typically Spanish, has a vibrant fish market where you can buy the catch of the day, and has a large general market on the edge of the town on a Monday morning. It has an historical castle previously owned by the local Count, which is situated high on a hill overlooking the port, from where you can catch a ferry to Majorca and Ibiza, or any of the other Balearic islands.
Either side of the town there are long clean sandy beaches. The new Marina area is well worth a visit to see the Yachts of the rich and famous. From here you have great views of the castle and the Montgo, and is a favourite sunny spot for lunch. There is also a piano bar in this area which plays jazz type music, and is a very popular venue in the evenings with the local sophisticats. It is situated at first floor level and has an outside terrace overlooking the marina and the town. On a balmy summer's evening it is quite a romantic location to share a drink or two with someone special.
In terms of other activities:
Golf: La Sella Golf a superb 18 hole course, currently being extended to 27 holes, in an outstanding setting with views of mountains all around. This is part of the Marriott hotel complex which has a fine restaurant and a jazz and blues club in the basement.
Oliva Nova Golf is about fifteen minutes drive, which is an 18 hole course, and Javea Golf about ten minutes which is a nine hole. Both La Sella and Javea have tennis courts. There is also a further nine hole course between Moraira and Calpe at San Jaime, called Golf Ifach. The views from the club house here are just stunning. Worth a visit just for lunch. For those who prefer bowls, there is the El Cid bowls club which has a well supported membership, about four kilometres to the north of Pedregeur. Again about ten minutes drive. They also have a very comfortable terrace with a swimming pool in an elevated position overlooking orange groves and the sea.
Horse riding is also available locally, and there are many country walks in the Montgo National Park.
Gata de Gorgos / Gata Residencial area
This property, on the brand new Gata Residential development near Javea, is ideally situated in the north of the Costa Blanca, on the side of a mountain halfway between the cities of Valencia and Alicante. The town of Javea, offering the full Costa Blanca experience with its lovely beach and wide range of restaurants and bars, is just 10 to15 minutes away by car. Golf courses and other fun entertainments are also easily accessible, while a new shopping centre called La Marina is conveniently located just 5 minutes drive away.
Gata is very Spanish, and is famous for it's basketware and wickerwork, also furniture, grapes and almonds since there are many almond trees in the local area, and if you can manage a trip in February or early March when the Almond blossom is out, it really is a sight to behold. The valleys are covered in a light shade of mauve.
From Gata you can catch the local train to Calpe, Altea, Benidorm and Alicante, and in the other direction to Denia. All these places have their attractions for different reasons. Calpe for it's beaches the old town and Calpe Rock. Altea is a very pleasant resort with it's own Marina, a very interesting old town built on a hill, with a particularly beautiful church, and if you are there in the month of September, you will see a very lively Fiesta called Moors and Christians which goes on for days and ends with a spectacular firework display. Benidorm has fabulous beeches, it's own micro climate, a fantastic promenade, many many shops, bars restaurants, and fabulous entertainment. Don't miss a visit to Benidorm Palace. But it can be very crowded and gets extremely congested with too many motor cars. So if you want to go, take the train, it's much less hassle.
For families, Terramitica theme park is well worth a day out. This is situated just off the motorway between Benidorm and the mountains. There is also a large Aquapark in this area, which is obviously very popular with the children.
Pedregeur is another small village just five minutes from the villa with a range of shops including a Mas y Mas supermarket. The town has a lively market on a Sunday morning, where you can buy just about anything.
For those of you that enjoy sampling wine, the Jalon and Orba valleys are just a few kilometres inland. They are situated behind the mountain on which the urbanisation is built, and the drive through the valley is particularly picturesque. The local wines are well respected and the Moscatel is quite famous. There are various Bodegas in Jalon where you can sample the various wines and buy them straight from the vat.
Both Denia and Javea have charming old towns, and the drive between the two over the Montgo mountain is quite breathtaking. Take a drive out to the point by the lighthouse, and you can view the whole of Javea, the beaches, and the surrounding mountains.
There is a large supermarket at the bottom of the hill on the main N332 that can supply all your holiday needs. You should not miss a trip to "Monroes" which is a popular bar and restaurant at the bottom of the urbanisation, where they serve traditional roasts, as well as Pizzas and Spanish dishes. They also have a Sports Bar.

Guestbook for Casa Panorama
We had just the most relaxing holiday, the boys were never out of the pool, which left us to laze on the terrace and take in the wonderful views. Best beach for us was Javea with all the bars and the street vendors at night. Denia also had a great atmosphere at night with the beautiful overhanging trees on Marquis de Campo. Very Spanish. Also loved Moraira, quite select. There is so much to see in this area, and the fragrance from the orange groves is just wonderful. Will have to come back. Thanks for letting us use your very comfortable home. Karen and Alan S-Lancashire.
Great house, very comfortable with good facilities. Loved the views from the terrace. You really need a car to get the best out of the area though. Very peaceful and relaxing. Will come again. Paul and Linda Mac. West Midlands.
Very interesting area, very green and more rural than we expected. Relatively uncomercialised when compared with other parts of Spain. Villa well equipped and very spacious compared with others we have stayed in. Lights very good in bathrooms. Enjoyable stay, would possibly book again. Sandra and Mike Holdsworth.- North London.
Get up, walk out on to your bedroom terrace, and watch the morning mist rising in the valley below, and the sun just coming up over the sea beyond Javea. Nip off for a round of golf at La Sella, what a setting! Couple of drinks at the nineteenth hole whilst mentally going over the round, and the shots that got away. Back to the Villa for a spot of light lunch, cold meats and salad, and half a bottle of wine. A snooze in the lounger on the terrace whilst catching a few rays. Wake up refreshed, quick shower, change, grab cozy, and off to the beach. Swim to the headland and dive off the rocks, or surf a little if the wind is in the right direction and the surf is up. Shower on beach and dry off before going for an evening meal at a casual reasonably priced restaurant with a terrace overlooking the bay. Watch the sun set behind the Montgo whilst finishing the meal. Stroll along the esplanade nodding and smiling at the vendors and the skaters and skate boarders. Sit for ten minutes for a quick Caricature, goodness! does my nose really look that big? Sit on a bench overlooking the beach watching the palms swaying in the breeze, with the sea gently caressing the shoreline about fifty metres out. A quick drink in the Eldorado, also on the front, whilst listening to the Colin Fraser Jazz Quartet, then back to my mountain retreat for a cup of cocoa under the stars, well may be a whiskey! So endeth another perfect day in paradise, this certainly beats working. Cheers, Kev.
