The Costa de Almeria region
In the southern part of the peninsula, the Almería Coast extends along the Mediterranean Sea. It enjoys the sunniest and warmest climate in the whole of Europe, with 320 days of sunshine on average. The landscape is very unusual with some areas desert-like while greenhouse crops flourish in others. The costline is a mix mountains, with rocky beaches or long open sandy beaches with dunes, affording a wide range of leisure options to enjoy. Its towns and cities still bear the traces of ancient civilisations, such as the El Argar and Los Millares cultures, with a wealth of ancient buildings, such as the Alcazaba citadel in the city of Almería and the watchtowers and castles along the coast, a sign of this area's historical importance. The most modern cities are located at the end of the coast and beckon tourists to enjoy the climate, sea and beaches, with resorts that make the Almería Coast the perfect place for a holiday. This coast's nature areas are also beyond compare. The Cabo de Gata-Nijar Nature Reserve is a paradisiacal spot with pristine, secluded beaches where you can enjoy the clean waters, ideal for sports like scuba diving, sailing and windsurfing. The sight of its high cliffs being struck by roaring waves is awe-inspiring.
Mojacar is an idyllic whitewashed village with a colourful history, perched on a hilltop in the foothills of the Sierra Cabrera mountain range, with stunning views of the Mediterranean coastline. Mojacar and the surrounding areas are steeped in history, from the Moores and Christians that fought for power of this area over 100's of years. The Moorish heritage is evident from its beautiful architecture and winding cobbled streets with the Moores and Christian's fiesta taking place every June.
Mojacar playa offers a variety of traditional Spanish tapas bar, restaurants and beach bars with 17km of golden sandy beaches awarded the blue flag.
There are several golf courses in the local area, within 25 minute drive and activities such as crazy golf, tenpin bowling and go karting for all age groups.
Garrucha is tradition Spanish fishing town which is virbrate all year round, with hundreds of tapas bars and restaurants to choose from. The daily fish market at 5 o'clock every day in the harbour is definatly worth a visit.
