THE OLIVE HOUSE - On the weekly let market for the first time

The Olive House is situated on the edge of the tranquil country village of Gaino on the first ridge of the hills surrounding Lake Garda. The property forms part of the traditional, old Italian village with stone and clay tile terraced housing forming an intriguing network of mysterious narrow alleys and piazzas.

Being on a raised, village edge position the Olive House's views are, on the one side over the clay tiled rooftops of the village to the magnificent Lake Garda below, and on the other side, looking over the olive groves of the garden to the grand backdrop of the mountains of Mt Pizocolo and Monte Castello behind.

The property consists of two, 3 story terraced apartments with semi basements. The two apartments have lockable, interleading doors and thus have the possibility for two families to share the accommodation while still maintaining family privacy. There is one big kitchen

at semi basement level leading out onto a courtyard and one big living room on the main street level. Four bedrooms and four bathrooms are on the first and second floors with one extra bedroom on the ground floor. All are spacious bedrooms with picture postcard views from the windows lead out onto balconies over looking the lake. The house has been renovated recently but it is an integral part of the ancient Italian village of Gaino and still maintains this Italian village charm and identity with a sensitive mix of modern and antique furniture and artefacts.

There are many activities in the area, both near and far. Walk out the door for a café on the village piazza or for a morning excursion up to the top of Monte Castello or head down to the river valley and visit the paper Museum(Museo della Carta) to peruse the ancient artefacts of the Roman era, when the valley was the European centre of papermaking. You could also explore the rock cataracts upstream where the river cuts its way through the valley rock or get up early and fish for trout. Our children have never come back with less than five decent sized trout!

There is a riding stable 5 minutes walk away where you can organize anything from a morning ride into the hills to a 5 day trek into the alps. Explore your options on http://www.scuderiacastello.it/equitazione_eng.php

A 15min walk will bring you to the Bogliaco golf club that has a tradition starting in 1912. It is worth having a look at its website to give you a feel for the beauty of the area. http://www.golfbogliaco.com/golf.php/p-6/English.htm

Of course you could also just partake in some sun therapy on the sun loungers at the poolside with an occasional cool dip to take the edge off the heat.

We look forward to hearing from you, if you wish to stay with us. Do email if you have any further questions and we will be more than happy to help.

For the comfort of all our guests, this is a pet free and non smoking property.

Activities in the area

An excellent day excursion by car is to the three villages that line the lake in the Gargnano region; Bogliaco, Villa and Gargnano. These are picture perfect lake villages filled with wonderful cafes and restaurants and the activities of lake life. The famous Centro Miglia, the 'round the lake' yacht race and a precursor to the Volvo Race, has its annual start in the Bogliaco port. Serious yacht dreamers can spend time ogling the beautiful race yachts from the port piazza café. Then move on to the beach at the village of Villa for a swim and a panini or ice cream and don't forget to make a booking to come back to an evening at Adriano's Lido Restaurant on the lake edge; one of the best. A short walk away is Villa's port piazza-you might need a coffee or a glass of wine at the local cafe to sit and soak up the sun and bohemian atmosphere of this community. Finally move onto the boutique village of Gargnano to promenade the shops and lakeside walk. Continue the walk out of the village to the Parco Fontenella beach to have a final swim and then relax with a sundowner and meal at the restaurant right on the beach. Spare a moment between this to visit OK.Surf behind the restaurant to book your next few days activities; biking, sailing, windsurfing. http://www.oksurf.it/ENG/start_eng.html

Should you prefer culture, the lake has a host of summer events, some dating back centuries. Link to

http://www.sno.co.uk/lakes-mountains-holidays/lake-garda-holidays/garda/events/

to get a sampling of events and don't forget to visit a lakeside village on the night the village hosts the 'bisse' race (traditional Venetian style boats). Each summer the lake villages take turns to host the preliminary 'league' races which culminate in the Final Race for the 'bandiera del lago' (flag of the Lake) held in the village of Sirmione. The programme of host villages and dates will be up on posters around the lake when you visit or you could try http://www.gardalake.com/event/race-palio-bisse-lake-garda

Of course you could venture further afield and take the ferries to visit villages on the other side of the lake, from the Germanic Riva at the top of the Lake to the Roman ruins of Nero's Villa in Sirmione at its tip. Or take the car across on the Maderno to Torri Car Ferry and explore the country around Verona, Vicenza and Venice. You might prefer to leave behind the stress of car driving and parking (especially in July and August) and take the Lake bus (tickets usually from the café closest to the bus stop) or Ferry down to Desenzano to catch a fast train to the cultural heavens of Venice, Verona, Brescia or Milan. Lake Ferry times at http://www.navigazionelaghi.it/eng/g_illago.html or download timetables at

http://www.navigazionelaghi.it/eng/g_areadown.asp - Beware the seasonal time changes and also public holiday time changes!

Or you could take a long, cool drink on your sun lounger beside the pool and just contemplate the pace of the backdrop of mountains…
