The Puglia/Molise region
The Gargano promontory rises like an island from the flat plains of the Tavolieri, geographically and culturally different from the rest of Puglia. Its landscape is remarkably diverse: beaches and lagoons to the north, a rocky indented eastern coast and mountainous, green heartland of oaks and beech trees.
For centuries the promontory was extremely isolated, visited only by pilgrims making their way along the valley to Monte Sant Angelo and its shrine. The fact that the whole peninsular has become a national park means that much of its interior remains unspoilt and quiet.
Gargano / Monte Sant' Angelo area
Monte Sant' Angelo is a fantastic place to relax and spend time, containing a Norman castle and one of Christianity's oldest and most important shrines there is much to see. However if you want to explore, from Monte Sant' Angelo you can venture into the Foresta Umbra, a landscape of limes, laurels, and towering yews, populated with foxes and gazelles.
The site of Monte Sant' Angelo, standing on a spur, commands panoramic views of the surrounding terrain. The apartments balcony provides spectacular views.
Monte Sant' Angelo is a place of pilgrimage for Catholics from all over Italy. The town is unspoiled and things have not changed here too much over the centuries.
The nearby Gargano National Park, with its 120,000 hectares of lagoons, mountains and sandy beeches, marine reserves, villages and forests, is one of Italy's most beautiful areas, its natural wealth being enhanced by centuries of history.
The Foresta Umbra (or Forest of Shadows) stretches right across the centre of the Gargano massif - 11,000 hectares of pines, oaks and beeches, hiding a rich variety of wildlife, Roe deer especially and is the last remnant of an ancient forest which once covered most of Puglia. The area was designated a national park in 1991 and there are various marked walks through the forest and a Centro di Visita in the middle which hands out advice and information.
If you are interested in mushrooms, you will be happy to know that several varieties of mushrooms grow in the area: the most common ones are the horse mushroom, the king bolete, the chanterelle, the honey mushroom, the milk mushroom, the russula mushroom.
How to get there
RyanAir and British Airways, both fly into Bari, which is the quickest route. Leave the airport and travel up the A14 until you see signs for Margherita di Savoia. From there follow the signs up the S159 to Manfredonia and then Monte Sant’ Angelo.
You can also fly into Pescara and drive down the A14 coming off at San Severo for a nice drive through the Gargano.
Alternatively you can take a local bus from Foggia train station up to MSA or the branch line to Manfredonia. There is car hire at Bari and Pescara airports (Hertz) and an Avis office in Foggia station.

For your peace of mind we have efficient and friendly local contacts who will assist you if you experience any problems.
The nearby national park with its dense forests offer beautiful walks in an area famous for orchids, mushrooms as well as deer. The bustling Saturday market is a must for local produce: ham, cheese, wine, honey and herbs.
Further details outdoors: Monte Sant' Angelo is a place of pilgrimage for Catholics from all over Italy. The town is unspoiled and things have not changed here too much over the centuries.
As you wander about town, look for local shops selling wrought-iron goods, which are among the finest in Italy. Ironwork has a long tradition here, with sons following in their fathers' footsteps. The locals also make wooden furniture and utensils. Most shops are located in Juno, in the centre of town and where your apartment is located.
During August and the summer months there is folk dancing, parades, children's entertainment and an outdoor cinema in the town square, but this is a place that can be visited all year round. Every night after dinner the town centre is thronging with residents out on their passeggiata. Sit at one of the bars under the trees, relax and watch life in Italy, seemingly unaffected by the outside world.
Monte Sant' Angelo is a fantastic place to relax and spend time, however if you want to explore, from Monte Sant' Angelo you can venture into the Foresta Umbra, a landscape of limes, laurels, and towering yews, populated with foxes and gazelles.
The climate is good, the quiet beaches are a short 20 minute drive away. Try having a fabulous (long) Sunday lunch at one the local agriturisomo restaurants where everything served including the wine is produced on the farm!
During the summer it can be a relief returning to the cooler air of the mountain after a day on the beach or a walk in the Foresta Umbra.

"The apartment has beautiful ceilings and was huge for just the two of us. We had stunning views from the balcony and often watched the sun set and the lights begin to twinkle from the white washed houses on the mountain. We ate peaches, nectarines and grapes every morning from the local fruit truck which were ridiculously cheap and swam in tranquil blue waters at Punta Rosa beach 20 mins away. To top it all it town is gorgeous and has many beautiful churches and a castle. " - Deb H
We stayed in this fabulous apartment in this gorgeous town for 6 nights in May and loved it. Ok, so it is a bit off the beaten track, but well worth the effort to get to it.We caught a train from Lecce through Bari to Foggia where we connected easily with a bus to Mont S'Angelo. The bus ride up the switchback road was amazing, the town is lovely, quaint, friendly people (very little english spoken made us learn more italian) and wonderful alimentari. The apartment is bright, great kitchen, comfy" - Savusavu, Fiji Islands.
"What a Place! "A perfect apartment in the perfect and 100% authentic Italian town of Monte Sant Angelo. We met no English speakers in our time there and even the local shopkeepers knew where we were staying! It's also a perfect base for walking in the Gargano National Park and the Foresta Umbra and their are gorgeous little beaches a few kilometers away. It's safe to say we fell in love with Puglia and Monte Sant angelo". " - FJM Dublin. July 18, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008.
""what a fantastic hol..we loved walking and talking with the locals in the evening.. perfect... empty roads, quiet beaches...serving clams and moules straight from the sea... the sky full of swallows and the amazing view from the apartment." " - Simon Taylor
""We cannot tell you how much we enjoyed our visit to Monte Sant'Angelo, spending a week in your apartment. My wife fell in love with the town and the area. Gorgeous coastal scenery, with flowering almond, mimosa, and other shrubs. " " - David Hahn
"Graeme, I would like to leave a review for the apt. but can't find the right spot. I will write it here and use it if you want. It was a great stay and your rep made it very easy. We drove 2000km with no problems with a gps. What a great spot! Thanks Eric
After a great trip from Rome we were apprehensive about seeing our apt. as we thought it very inexpensive. We were surprised to open the doors (3) and find a very comfortable, roomy apt. with an incredible view. The kitchen had everything we needed and we cooked all our meals there. Shopping is easy and fun. Prices were much less than the north and the markets in Monte Sant Angelo (SAT) and Manfredonia (Weds) are huge and have everything! we took day trips in all directions and were amazed by so much to see and do. This apt is in a central location to explore the Gargano. At night there were many movies to watch or you can join the locals hanging out on the narrow streets. This apt is located close to everything and you can walk to anywhere in town. We would rent it again for sure. Very cool place". Eric Danielson
