The Aberdeenshire region

Aberdeenshire forms part of the North East corner of Scotland, a large and diverse area that wraps around the vibrant city of Aberdeen. A hidden gem, this mainly rural region has traditonally been known for farming and fishing, and many families still carry on this work - the fields and hedgrows are a constant change of colour and visual delight throughout the year.

Scotland is famous for it's whisky and Aberdeenshire offers some of the best whisky trails, following a line of distinguished distilleries where you can get an insight into the making process and taste the final thing. There are also castle and gallery trails that highlight the rich historic culture of the area, from small heritage centres to imposing baronial mansions. The internationaly famous Scottish Traditional Boat Festival takes place every summer just along the coast form Gardenstown, and is a riot of food, crafts, music and song alongside the maritime theme. You could also visit the Taste Of Grampian Food Festival, and sample the excellant local produce prepared by celebrity chefs.

Aberdeenshire offers lots of treats for families too, including the Macduff Marine Aquarium that has the largest open air tank in Britain. Take the kids to the Lighthouse Museum in Fraserburgh, run them ragged at the carting and soft play area at Williamsons in Turriff, or meander along our fantastic wild beaches, spotting dolphins and minke whales. If the teenagers fancy an adrenilin rush they could take surf lessons on Banff Links, try cross country skiing at the Nordic Centre in Huntly, hike up the Cairngorn mountains or paraglide along the coast.

Or you could always just put your feet and admire our outstanding views of sea, sky, mountains and rolling fields.

Gardenstown

We are based in the small village of Gardenstown on the Banffshire Coast, North East Scotland. This a warm and welcoming community nestling between red sandstone cliffs and rolling countryside, where you'll find a welcoming village pub, harbourside cafe and a Spar minimarket. A travelling fish van also visits the village and for a really authentic taste of the area have a quiet word with one of the small boat owners in the harbour, and they may bring you a gleaming fresh catch of mackerel or lobster.

Our friendly local pub is a few minutes walk, with a temptingly wide selection of Scottish whisky and home cooked food. Down by the harbour is a small restaurant specialising in superb steaks and fresh fish. As you come into Gardenstown there is a small Spar store for everyday needs and fuel pumps.

Gardenstown is also home to a small gallery and a number of artists who regularly open their doors during the North East Open Studios event every September. The village community also runs a number of events through the year including the very tasty Strawberry Fayre every summer, with a smoked fish BBQ and raft making competitions in the small harbour.

This is a peaceful and uncommercialised seaside hideaway where you can spend the morning beach combing (keeping one eye out for dolphins in the bay), and after a lunch explore one of the local walks that fan out from the village. In the county town of Banff 8 miles away, you'll find hotels and restaurants, supermarkets, a hospital, and the major visitor attraction of Duff House, an 18th Century manor house and gallery with adventure playground.

Stroma offers a wonderful home from home for families and groups, a great base for exploring, relaxing and spending time together. A short drive from Gardenstown brings you to woods, hidden coves, whisky, heritage and art trails, golf, horse riding and surfing clubs, fishing on rivers and sea, and miles and miles of clear fresh Scottish air to recharge your batteries.

"Lovely location, very comfortable and would go back again."

Made to feel very welcome, very steep descent to the cottage had to drive my elderley fathers car up for him when he wanted to go out. Beautiful walks along the beach to hill top walks. Beautiful coast of Scotland.
