The Lombardy / Lake Garda Area region
Veneto is one of the twenty regions of Italy. Its population is about five million. The region's capital and largest city is Venice.
Veneto, as part of the Republic of Venice, had been an independent state for more than a millennium. The Republic wasn't restored at the Congress of Vienna after the Napoleonic Wars and was annexed by the Austrian Empire, until it joined to the Italy in 1866, as a result of the Third Italian War of Independence. Venice ruled for centuries over one of the largest and richest maritime republics and trade empires in the world. Due to this rich cultural legacy and a unique identity, the regional statute describes Venetians as a "people".
Veneto can be divided into four areas: the northern Alpine zone, the hill zone, the lower plain and the coastal territory.
The climate changes significantly between one area to another. Continental on the plains, the climate is milder along the Adriatic coast, around Lake Garda and in the hilly areas.
The Garda area
Verona is a city in the Veneto, northern Italy, with approx. 265,000 inhabitants and one of the seven chef-lieus of the region. It is the second largest city municipality in the region and the third of northeast Italy. It is one of the main tourist destinations in northern Italy, owing to its artistic heritage, several annual fairs, shows, and operas, such as the lyrical season in the Arena, the ancient amphitheatre built by the Romans.
The city has been awarded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO because of its urban structure and architecture.
Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy. It is located in Northern Italy, about half-way between Brescia and Verona, and between Venice and Milan. Glaciers formed this alpine region at the end of the last Ice Age. The lake and its shoreline are divided between the provinces of Verona (to the southeast), Brescia (southwest), and Trentino (north). Being easily accessible from the north via the Brenner Pass, the lake is a major tourist destination, including a number of exclusive hotels and resorts along its shore.
It is one of the more characteristic towns on the east Coast of the homonymous biggest lake in Italy: the Lake of Garda. Garda is only 32 km from the city of Verona, and is one of the smallest towns in the whole province.
Sights
The old village of Garda: narrow streets where you can walk between the promenade, The old Rock of Garda: it stands 300 mt over the town and offers to visitors a wonderful sight over the whole lake, over the same rise it is located the 15th century Carmelite monastery.
