The Madeira region

Madeira (Wood) is a beautiful verdant island. It is Portugal's "Jewel in the Atlantic". The island is a haven for anyone who enjoys walking, whether your taste runs to gentle strolls or hard core hiking. Madeira’s system of irrigation channels, known as levadas, carry water down from the mountains on gentle gradients. These levadas provide a ready-made system of trails. There are 1300 miles of them, crisscrossing the island, and they have level footpaths running along their entire length. Walkers of all ages and abilities can take in some of the finest countryside, surrounded by colourful foliage and spectacular views.
Madeira’s greatest attraction has to be the subtropical climate, sometimes known as “the island of eternal spring”. Even in winter the temperature rarely falls below 17C, and rarely exceeds 23C in high summer.Garajau has an excellent bus service to and from Funchal as well as to the next viallage Canico and its costal resort of Canico de Baixo. The beach at Garajau has been recently restored with access by road or cable lift.
The landscape is covered in a green mantle of rich subtropical foliage. The variety and profusion of flowers makes the island a permanent flower show. Birds of Paradise, with their bright orange beak-like flowers, blossom in open fields. Fragrant hydrangeas line walking paths (levadas) that skirt the edge of mountain terraces.
The landscape and vegetation, coupled with the ever friendly Madeirans and the appetizing food, combine to ensure that Madeira is a place of immense appeal which draws one back again and again.
The Garajau area
Located on the sunny, dry, southern coast of Madeira, Garajau is situated, midway between the airport, and the capital, Funchal. Taxi journey time to both is just 12 minutes. Garajau has long been known to be one of Madeira’s high class residential areas and is named after the black-headed sea birds, terns, which nest in the cliffs.
Just below the town is a 200m high headland with a fine "miradouro" - a statue of Christ with outstretched arms, similar to the larger statues in Rio de Janeiro or Lisbon. This is a wonderful spot to watch the sun go down and it has great views west to the Bay of Funchal. The coastline here at Garajau is also a conservation area, and was one of Europe’s first underwater nature reserves, providing sanctuary for whales, dolphins and seals. The sea shore has now been updated and opened up with a new cable lift to take visitors down onto the beach and a beachfront restaurant.
Garajau is also ideal as a location to start the many levada walks in Madeira.
Both Golf courses are within easy reach and the coastal area of Caniço de Baixo boasts three world renowned diving schools.
Garajau’s high street combines the Hotel Dom Pedro Garajau on one side of the road and a multitude of shops, bakeries, coffee shop, ice cream parlous and a few patisseries, and a medium sized well stocked mini-markets with ATM outside, a bank [ Barclays] and several restaurants, bars and apartments on the other. Our apartment is on the next street round the corner from all these amenities.

Hello Connie
It is quite a bonus having the internet in the apartment - we had thought we would find WIFI spots but this is much more convenient.
We are thoroughly enjoying ourselves here - your apartment is just right - the terrace is superb and we love the sunrise over Ilhas Desertas. One of the Estrelitzias is in flower and has more buds coming.

Hello Connie
Just a few words to say what a lovely peaceful time Mary and I had at your apartment. I loved it and Madeira's lush green mountain's backdrop enhances the lower built up areas making it special along with its cleanliness and friendly people.
We slobbed about a little some days just reading and sitting on the beautiful terrace in the sun which was a wonderful bonus. Funchal was really nice to stroll, have lunch and a little wine--just a little !!
A trip to the Nun's valley was a must for us, the driver was so friendly and informative the clouds were high in the mountains so the vista was terrific. The 3-hour round trip to the south west of the island gave us another insight to the island--bananas come to mind. On arriving back to the apartment the sun was out so we sat on the terrace and took our usual positions with the books and a glass of cheer.
The botanical gardens around the golf course were so pretty. The gardens Splendida in Caniço were my favourite--we sat there for a few hours - such a relaxing place, we read our books yet again and just kept quiet.
So as you can tell I have wound down considerably with all relaxation. Thank you so much for letting us rent your beautiful apartment and who knows we could be back with our men folk. Once again --thank you both.

Dear Connie
We have just got back from our holiday in Madeira and wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed it. What a beautiful island with charming people and the most perfect temperatures, around 25 degrees each day.
The apartment was lovely, everything that we could have hoped for, very comfortable and well equipped with a fabulous balcony. We so enjoyed the views out over the sea, it was great to get up in the morning and be greeted with such a stunning vista.
It was just the right distance from Funchal and with our hire car getting about was very easy. We did lots of things, the Monte cable car, swimming in the Lido at Funchal, driving across the island to Porto Moniz and tea at Reids. We ate out in Garajau three times, twice at O Franco’s and once at the Blue Elephant. The food was excellent and we went each morning to the bakers to collect our breakfast rolls.
Our eleven year old son really enjoyed the whole experience; he particularly enjoyed the Lido and cruise ship spotting while sitting at a sea front café in Funchal. Like us he can’t wait to go back and do everything all over again and lots of other things that we didn’t have time for.
Thank you for helping us to have such an enjoyable holiday, one of our best and we really look forward to visiting Madeira again.
With very best wishes.
