The Madeira region

Madeira (Wood) is a beautiful verdant island. It is Portugal's "Jewel in the Atlantic". The island is a haven for anyone who enjoys walking, whether your taste runs to gentle strolls or hard core hiking. Madeira’s system of irrigation channels, known as levadas, carry water down from the mountains on gentle gradients. These levadas provide a ready-made system of trails. There are 1300 miles of them, crisscrossing the island, and they have level footpaths running along their entire length. Walkers of all ages and abilities can take in some of the finest countryside, surrounded by colourful foliage and spectacular views.
Madeira’s greatest attraction has to be the subtropical climate, sometimes known as “the island of eternal spring”. Even in winter the temperature rarely falls below 17C, and rarely exceeds 23C in high summer.Garajau has an excellent bus service to and from Funchal as well as to the next viallage Canico and its costal resort of Canico de Baixo.
The landscape is covered in a green mantle of rich subtropical foliage. The variety and profusion of flowers makes the island a permanent flower show. Birds of Paradise, with their bright orange beak-like flowers, blossom in open fields. Fragrant hydrangeas line walking paths (levadas) that skirt the edge of mountain terraces.
The landscape and vegetation, coupled with the ever friendly Madeirans and the appetizing food, combine to ensure that Madeira is a place of immense appeal which draws one back again and again.

Garajau area

Located on the sunny, dry, southern coast of Madeira, Garajau is situated, midway between the airport, and the capital, Funchal. Taxi journey time to both is just 12 minutes. Garajau has long been known to be one of Madeira’s high class residential areas and is named after the black-headed sea birds, terns, which nest in the cliffs.
Just below the town is a 200m high headland with a fine "miradouro" - a statue of Christ with outstretched arms, similar to the larger statues in Rio de Janeiro or Lisbon. This is a wonderful spot to watch the sun go down and it has great views west to the Bay of Funchal. The coastline here at Garajau is also a conservation area, and was one of Europe’s first underwater nature reserves, providing sanctuary for whales, dolphins and seals. The sea shore has now been updated and opened up with a new cable car to take visitors down onto the beach and a beachfront restaurant.
Garajau is also ideal as a location to start the many levada walks in Madeira.
Both Golf courses are within easy reach and the coastal area of Caniço de Baixo boasts three world renowned diving schools.
Garajau’s high street combines the Hotel Dom Pedro Garajau on one side of the road and a multitude of shops, bakeries, coffee shop, ice cream parlous and a few patisseries, and a medium sized well stocked mini-markets with ATM outside, a bank [ Barclays] and several restaurants, bars and apartments on the other. Our apartment is on the next street round the corner from all these amenities.

Guestbook for Penthouse Apartment in Garajau

Hi Connie
A note to say how much we enjoyed our holiday. Your apartment is amazing and the view from the terrace nothing short of breathtaking. On Friday evening we witnessed a Dolphin feeding frenzy right in front of the apartment. Literally hundreds of Dolphins came in from all over to feast on a large shoal of fish and they were jumping and diving about all over the place. Suzy was fantastic and a brilliant agent for you and the apartment was absolutley spotless.
We loved Madeira and will definitely be going back so we look forward to being in contact with you again once we sort out our future hoilday dates.
Kind regards
Len & Vanessa Beckett

Hi Connie
Just returned from our holiday in Madeira. Your apartment is fabulous and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
The apartment was well equipped and Natalie had the place spotless for our arrival and was there to meet us and show us around.
The weather was ok but not brilliant and we made full use of the balcony area just inside the glass doors. We had breakfast there every morning in full sunshine.
We hired a car and travelled on just about every road in Madeira! We visited many beautiful places especially on the North of the island. Funchal is a lovely town and not far from Garajau.
If we come back to Madeira we will certainly use your apartment again.
Many thanks Linda Milne [09/11/08]

Dear Connie and John, we are home again and we had a wonderful time. Your apartment is wonderful. Every morning we enjoyed the sunrise. The location is also very central. We did 550 km and can say that Madeira is a very nice place to stay.
Natalie was there when we arrived. She is a nice women. The apartment was very clean.
We have already made a decision to go back to Madeira. Greetings from Ineke and Henny 25/10/08
