Boar Cottage is situated in Wensleydale , known as the waterfalls dale in view of the number of falls in the dale. The most famous are probably the well known beauty spot of Aysgarth Falls and Hardraw Force, the latter being the largest single drop waterfall in England at about 100 feet high (33 metres)
The cottage is only a few minutes driving distance from the popular small market town of Leyburn with its shops pubs and restaurants. A couple of minutes walk from the market place is the well known Leyburn Shawl where Mary Queen of Scots is reputed to have lost her shawl during her escape from the nearby Bolton Castle. The view from the Shawl is considered by many to be one of the finest views in the Dales. The Wensleydale Railway, an authentic heritage railway, has a station at Leyburn. The railway line runs along the dale for about 16 miles (27kms) and a steam service operates at certain times in summer.
A few minutes drive from Leyburn is Middleham with its 12th century Norman castle that was the childhood home of King Richard III. It is also well known for its many horse racing training establishments and you can watch the horses train on the local gallops. With the magnificent scenery in the background it is an impressive sight!
Near to Middleham is the Forbidden Corner which, with its unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises, makes a great family day out. There is even a theme park for the kids (Lightwater Valley) within driving distance for a day out
Within easy reach by car are a number of castles and abbeys notably Fountains Abbey, which is a World Heritage Site.
A number of agricultural shows take place in the Dales each year including Wensleydale Show Leyburn 27th August 2016 (located less than a mile from Boar Cottage), Reeth Show 29th August 2016.
