The Scottish Highlands region

Wester Ross in the North West Highlands of Scotland has it all – towering mountains, sandy beaches, sea and hill lochs, rich forests and wild open moorland.

It has some of the finest coastal and mountain scenery in Britain, in an area of vast open expanses of wild countryside where deer and pine martins roam and where a wide variety of birdlife can be spotted, including the magnificent golden eagle and the even more elusive sea eagle. The seas are home to a multitude of marine mammals – seals, porpoise, dolphins, otters and whales. There are many fine sandy beaches along the many miles of breathtaking and unspoilt coastline.

If you want more from your holiday than soaking up the magnificent scenery, the area has plenty to offer. Whether you are a hillwalker, climber, birdwatcher or naturalist you will find the area ideal with access to vast tracts of wild mountainous country. There are many fine walks for all ages and abilities and for the hardened mountaineer An Teallach, Slioch and Beinn Eighe provide exceptional challenges.

The Gairloch area is an ideal base from which to tour some of Britain's wildest and most spectacular scenery, and is only an hour or two from Inverness and, being a breathtakingly beautiful part of the Scottish Highlands, is the perfect holiday destination.

Sea fishing trips go out daily from Gairloch pier and sealife tours will take you out to look for marine life. If you are feeling more adventurous, take a boat trip to the enchanted Shiant Islands, home to many thousands of puffins, guillimots, razorbills and other sea birds. Whale sightings are common and dolphins and basking shark can also be spotted.

There is good trout fishing in the many hill lochs and some river fishing for salmon and sea trout. Sea fishing from the shore is possible all round the coast and there are slipways for launching a boat. For golfers, there is a 9 hole golf courses at Gairloch, and for those who love horses how about pony trekking in the Flowerdale area of Gairloch?

Your holiday would not be complete without a visit to Inverewe Gardens at Poolewe. Now owned by the National Trust for Scotland, it is home to hundreds of exotic species of plants from around the world, all thriving in the warm, humid climate of the west coast.
