Enquire nowThe Tuscany / Siena Province region
Gaiole is in Siena Province only a 30 min drive from the historic city famous for it's Duomo, Campo and of course it's Palio, run twice a year in July and August.
Steeped in history, the regions characteristics are fashioned out of the centuries of Sienese-Florentine wars with hilltop castles and fortified villages scattered across the landscape, now providing the perfect backdrop for wine tasting, olive oil sampling and gastronomic tours.
For the more archaelogically minded there are Etruscan settlement sites to explore and the excellent Etruscan museums in Siena and Volterra to visit.
Florence is about 1.25 hrs away by car and just half an hour by train from nearby Montevarchi and makes for a comfortable day trip. It needs no introduction being one of the worlds finest cultural centres offering all year round opportunities to visit great galleries and 'palazzi'.
If that's not enough, try your hand at a cooking course and learn the secrets of Tuscan cuisine in nearby Lecchi or Coltibuono; or explore Gaiole 's sister Chianti League towns of Radda, Greve and Castallina; or venture a little further afield to the antique markets of Arezzo or the ancient towers of San Gimignano; or for 'Twilight' fans maybe a trip to the home of the Volturi in Volterra.
The Gaiole in Chianti area
There are over 100 wine producers in Gaiole commune alone forming the backbone of the local economy, ranging from the renowned Castello d'Ama and Castello di Brolio through to many small family vineyards.
A trading centre for local business, Gaiole offers five restaurants, three cafe bars, a pub, two delicatessens, a great value take away pizzaria, a tourist office, pharmacy, ATMs and local shopping caterering for all local delicacies and holiday needs.
Famous for it's cycling festival, L'Eroica held every year during the first weekend in October, the village also hosts frequent concerts and produce festivals throughout the year.
It is an excellent centre for walking and cycling (try some of the L'Eroica route yourselves with our free to use cycles); the Siena-Florence long distance footpath runs along the ridge above the village, and walking notes are provided for a number of circular routes around Gaiole. There is a maze of waymarked 'strada bianchi' (unsurfaced roads) criss-crossing the surrounding hills and valleys just waiting to be explored.
If you are not that energetic, Gaiole is the local base for 'Tuscan Scooter Rental' where you can hire a bright red Vespa on a daily basis! Check out www.tuscanyscooterrental.com
Vineyards and olive groves abound, amongst which sit the majestic Florintine castles of Meleto, Brolio and others. from the atmospheric ruins of of Castello di Montegrossi perched high above the village, you can look down on your accomodation and wonder at the magic of Chianti.

My Husband and I stayed here with a group of our friends for a week. It was the perfect size and location. Great for day trips to the hill towns of Tuscany or just hanging out in the cute town of Gaiole. The place was very clean, comfortable, and inviting. The pool was great but a little cold since it is not heated but we swam anyway. The owner also suggested a cooking class for us all to take which was one of the highlights of our trip. I would definitely come back again or recommend to friends. |
