The Midi-Pyrenees / Tarn region

Gite Solterre is located in the department of Tarn in the Midi-Pyrenees region of France amongst the vineyards of the famous Gaillac wine producing area. This area is full of gently rolling hills, green valleys and delightful medieval villages (bastides) and is often referred to as a ‘French Tuscany’. Some call it the “golden triangle” between Albi, Gaillac and Cordes-sur-Ciel.
Gite Solterre provides a fabulous escape from hectic city's life without compromising on luxury and modern living comfort — underfloor heating, heated private plunge pool, outside dining, private garden, romantic kiosque with great views & BBQ, satellite TV (British Sky), music system with iPod docking stations, selection of board games, books and music.
It is a perfect holiday base to explore the region full of history and natural beauty – forests, mountains, hilltop villages, great full and wine, Mediterranean atmosphere and climate. We love this region as well because of its people — very friendly and welcoming.
Walking, cycling, hiking and riding. Beautiful walks through vineyards in all directions from the house. Nearby is located Forest of Gresigne, one of the biggest oak forests in Europe — it offers fantastic views and walking opportunities. This area of France is loved by cyclists.
The Gaillac / Montels area
Nearby villages and towns:
Castelnau de Montmiral — 7 minutes drive
This «bastide» or fortified village overlooks the Vère valley and is now listed as «one of most beautiful villages of France». It has a trully charming market place (La Place des Arcades) with the town hall, couple of restaurants, some shops and a hotel.
Gaillac — 10 minutes drive
Gaillac is the nearest to us proper town with numerous shops, restaurants, bars, cinema, supermarkets and banks. It is the capital of local wine making region. The old town has some charming squares with fountains and narrow streets lined with old houses that are a happy combination of timber and brick work.
Cordes-sur-ciel — 15 minutes drive
A quintessential medial hilltop village that was built in 1222. The winding, steeply sloping, stone streets of the «upper town» are now home to «medieval» crafts, galleries, museums, small individual shops and numerous bars and restaurants, including the . In the «lower town» there is a number of shops, banks, pharmacy and a small but good Saturday market.
Albi — 25 minutes drive
Albi is the capital of Tarn department, it lies on the banks of the river Tarn and is dominated by an enormous catherdral-cum-fortress Cathedrale Ste-Cecile said to be the biggest red brick building in the world. Next to the Cathedrale is the Toulouse-Lautrec museum that contains the most complete permanent collection of artist's work. It is a very charming and friendly town — it has a fantastic choice of individual shops, quality restaurants and tea-salons.
St Antonin-Noble-Val — 25 minutes drive
A delightful town 30km southwest of Najac sits on the bank of the Aveyron beneath the beetling cliffs of the Roc d'Anglars close to the famous Gorges of the River Aveyron. The town was used as a location for the 2001 movie Charlotte Gray, starring Cate Blanchett. It attracts many visitors especially on a Sunday during the market hours. We strongly recommend you to visit this market - quintessentially French experience! It is also the local centre for canoeing.

What a fantastic place! The gite is pure luxury. No attention to detail has been missed by the owners, it has everything you would possibly need. On arrival, I was met by Philippe who was very helpful. The welcome pack was great, as I arrived on Sunday afternoon, when all the shops are closed. The gite is in a very peaceful location with beautiful views across fields. You could quite easily spend all your time at the gite, relaxing by the lovely pool area and enjoying the tranquility of this place. However, it is perfectly located to explore the beautiful villages and surronding areas that this part of France has to offer. There is a lovely little village only 5 mins by car which has everything you need on a daily basis. Can't recommend this place enough! Will definitely go again. |

The Gite was perfect for a long stay and one that allowed you to explore the beutifual midi pyrenees area. It was bright spacious and the bedrooms were large. well appointed bathroom and powder room. The owners took care of all the little details down to the candles for candle lit dinners by the lovely pool. The BBQ area looked onto splendid sunflower fields and the hills beyond. I will definately stay here again....and I fell in love with the area..........so much to offer sans hordes of tourists! |

Our time spent at Gite Solterre was quite simply amazing. It really is one of the most peaceful places I have ever been too. The quality of furnishing was excellent, the welcome from Philippe, the welcome box, the plunge pool, and so on and so on, it really was the perfect honeymoon. Plenty to do out and about with Albi standing out for us and the sun setting over the sunflowers fields was simply idyllic especially when it was washed down with a drop of the local wine. I know I will be returning to this place quite a few times in years to come, no questions about that and if you need any persuasion in booking your time at Gite Solterre please call me as to not have the experience will be a real shame. |

AMY (KENT), 2010
"We were truely amazed when we arrived at the Gite. While on the website the photos look great, it really does need to be experienced to be appreiated. The decor and furniture are all top quality and it really does feel like home from home, with all the comforts one could want. The garden/plunge pool area are private. The location is very peaceful, and does feel like you are getting away from it all, but is within close range of shops, vineyards and some truely great restaurants. One of our favorite things was to use the BBQ area in the evening, its quiet and the sunsets over the countryside are just lovely. Its the perfect romantic getaway".
CHERYL (PARIS), 2010
"The owner has kept some of the charm of the old winery with it's thick walls and stone facade and blended it with modern and tastefully decorated interior. We enjoyed using the BBQ and outdoor dining area next to the pool. The peaceful surroundings and splendid views of rolling hills covered in vineyards and sunflowers, corn fields and oak forests. The cool & quiet mid summer evenings and comfortable bedding meant we all slept well. The good quality towels and linen and the thoughtful & generous welcome package made all the difference. Games, books, wireless broadband and Satellite TV kept our grown up children entertained. A lot of thought has been put into providing top quality holiday accommodation, right down to the toiletries in the bathroom. Everything is clean& new. We were lucky enough to be there when the mirabelles in front of the gite were ripe but too early for the figs! There’s a great butcher comme delicatessen & pastry/ bread /fruit /vegie shop just down the road. This little paradise is one of France’s best kept secrets!"
B&G (BELGIUM) 2010
"Acceuil exceptionnel et gîte de qualité, confortable et très bien équipé, idéalement situé et au calme.
Région magnifique, remplie d'histoire, permettant ballades et découvertes culturelles.
Gîte à recommander!"
OSCAR (YORK), 2009
"The gite is beautiful & we had an amazing time there. It is very spacious, brand new furniture, new kitchen, bathrooms. Quality linen. Generous welcome pack. Very clean and brand new. Private terrace and the pool. BBQ. We were met by a very frendly housekeeper who speaks good English. Owners have thought or everything - it was a real joy to stay there. And the place is SO QUIET, we slept so well. Lovely views over the vines and fields. Local village has 2 Michelin star restaurants. Albi is 25 mins drive with lovely boutiques and restaurants. Toulouse is 50 mins away. We really recommend the gite and will be back there again!"
