The Algarve region

With its stunning coastline, excellent golf courses and pleasant year round climate, the Algarve's 200 kilometre stretch of southern shoreline has become one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations.

Bordered on two sides by the Atlantic Ocean, the Algarve is divided from the rest of Portugal by a series of low lying mountains. In the east, the Guadiana River forms a scenic border with neighbouring Spain.

There is a clear definition between the Western Algarve and the East. Whilst the West shows more development towards tourism, the Eastern Algarve and its tidal marshlands still have a tranquil beauty, and the small resorts along the coast have retained much of their character, looking today as they must have looked long ago.

Here, tourism blends in perfectly with local activities creating a relaxed way of life. There is a tinge of excitement and even romance about the ferry boat trips to the beach islands, where visitors are rewarded with superb, less crowded bathing beaches and warm waters.

The sea water temperature is around 14c in January and reaches a high 22c in August. A pleasant sea breeze refreshes the temperatures of the region, which are around 18c in January and 29c or more in July and August.

The Algarve is regarded as the Europoean finest destination for golfers and has recently been voted the most established region of the golf travel industry.

Professionals rate Monte Rei, the Jack Nicklaus - designed golf course in the Eastern Algarve as the best 18 holes in Portugal. Monte Rei golf course is just a 15 minute drive from the apartment.

The Eastern Algarve region also boasts several championship courses, both at European and World level. There are four 18 hole golf courses within a radius of 25 Km. Benador, is an 18 hole par 71 course, 5 minutes drive away, Quinta da Ria and Quinta de Cima are both 18 hole par 72 course, 10 minutes drive away and Castro Marim, an 18 hole par 71 course, a 20 minute drive to the East, on the way to Ayamonte, Spain.

.

The Algarve can also count on around 300 hours of Sun during the year which makes it a favourite destination for those who enjoy such a sunny climate. The autumn and winter months are mild and you will need a jacket in the evening.

Fuzeta

Fuseta is a traditional Portuguese town, brimming with character and friendly people. Now increasing in popularity, Fuseta has so many wonderful qualities to offer. An abundance of restaurants ranging from 'cheap and cheerful' Portuguese cuisine (sardines/chicken, salad and chips!) to Pizzerias and to good quality cuisine are on offer - as well as a large selection of cafes and bars serving drinks and snacks at reasonable prices. The large riverside square is perfect for sitting in the sun and idling the time away with a beer or a coffee!

The most beautiful aspect of Fuseta though has to be the fabulous beach Island of Armona. By taking the inexpensive river ferry you are transported to a beautiful white sandy island akin to the Carribbean. The island is separated from the mainland by the Ria Formosa which is in itself a proteced wildlife area with many migrating birds. There is a small range of facilities on the Island. For those who prefer to remain on the 'mainland', there is a town beach with a range of cafes.

THE BEAUTIFUL TOWN OF TAVIRA

When staying in Fuseta a visit to the beautiful town of Tavira is essential! You will not fail to be enthralled by its unspoilt charm, character and tranquility. As you wander along the cobbled streets, you'll see an abundance of history dating as far back as 2000BC. A Roman bridge links the 2 parts of the town across the River Gilao, its sides decorated with traditional old bars and restaurants where you can relax and enjoy a peaceful drink or meal. Horse drawn carriages and a small train operate around the town and are perfect for sightseeing and enjoying the peaceful ambience. The many churches (37 in total!), the town castle and the typical fisherman's harbour leading to the River Formosa Natural Park are all places to visit, along with the wonderful daily market selling fresh home grown produce. Tavira Island and its wonderful beach is accessible by ferry boat from the town and offers excellent facilities with a wonderful holiday atmosphere.

OTHER THINGS TO SEE AND DO

By travelling a little further afield there are a good range of things to do to suit all tastes. For nature lovers there are forest walks, cruises along the River Guadiana or natures trails along the Ria Formosa Reserve where bird watching is in abundance! By travelling towards the West there are some excellent shopping centres in Faro and Guia as well as the famous Water Parks and Zoo Marine (wonderful for children), all easily reached by car (around 45 minutes) or by day trip coach. From this property it is easy to take a day trip to Spain. The lovely border town of Ayamonte is not far by car, and once there you can sample the delights of another country, including wine, tapas and excellent shopping. Or you can travel by car, local bus or train to Vila Real de Santo Antonio and from there take the 15 minute ferry crossing to Ayamonte. For the more adventurous the vibrant city of Seville is approx 170km away. For budding historians the Castle at Castro Marim is worth a look.

GOLF

Fuseta is well located for golfers wishing to sample the excellent courses situated in the Eastern Algarve. Within a 20km radius there are 7 courses to choose from. Benamor and the 2 Quintas (Ria and Cima) are the most popular and can be reached within several minutes. The prestigious new course of Monte Rei designed by Jack Nicklaus now has its first 18 holes open and is continuing in its development to the second phase offering the height of golfing luxury - although a costly experience, this is a real treat for golfing fanatics wishing to experience a little high life! Travelling only 10kms further on towards Spain, the challenging course of Castro Marim, along with its famous country club comes highly recommended and just across the border are the Costa Esuri and Quinta do Vale courses now growing in popularity.

"Spectacular Views"

Great apartment, spacious, lovely location, quite unspoilt, with the most spectacular views from the roof terrace. Area quaint, nice beach within walking distance and access to unspoilt beaches by ferry/water taxi. A small selection of restaurants close by, with seafood the speciality. The area retains the feeling of the unspoilt Portugal and food and drinks in the bars and restaurants was around 50% what you might pay in the more touristy areas.

"Fantastic town, fantastic apartment"

We visited Penny's lovely spacious apartment with our 8 and 11 year olds and had a fabulous time. Fuseta was ideal for us - stunning beaches, a traditional fishing village feel but enough visitors to keep it feeling lively and for the children to make friends to play with. The pictures barely do the views from the apartment justice, the landscape is ever changing as the tide ebbs and flows, and I loved to just stand up on the roof terrace with a glass of wine watching it. We all enjoyed getting the ferry across to the island beach, and whilst there were some days where the sea got quite exciting most days were quite calm. We found the prices very reasonable, even out on the island. Whilst there we jumped on the train to Tavira and Olhao, which were also lovely. All in all, a great holiday, thanks Penny

"Great, great, great!"

This apartment is in a wonderful location, with fabulous views and excellent facilities. Penny has provided a real home from home feel with all you could need in terms of kitchen appliances, utensils, tv etc and was very helpful in answering our queries before we left. I would really recommend Fuseta as a holiday destination (shhh; don't tell anyone else) and this apartment.

"I love Fuseta!"

This is the 3rd trip to Fuseta. What an amazing place. So Portuguese. Our appartment was a 5 minute walk into the square. The appartment and pool are 1st class. The view from the rooftop is beautiful. Will definately be back.

Thank you for taking the time to write this enthusiastic review and I agree that Fuseta is a really special place being so typically Portuguese as Portugal used to be 20 years ago with restaurant and bar prices to match!
It is really inexpensive to eat out here, even cheaper than eating in, and you will see many local people eating out in the evening in the picturesque Village Square where many of the restaurants BBQ the local catch or my favourite, chicken piri piri!
Two of you can have a 3 course meal with a carafe of the local wine for no more than €16 in total (not each).
The little bar, which is really pretty with the typical Portuguese colourful tiles on the outside which is across the quiet street from the apartment charges €1.50 for a really large glass of wine and beer is equally as cheap. This bar is really friendly and popular with the people of Fuseta and even has good sea views too from the terrace.
The view from the private Roof top terrace set above my Penthouse apartment accessed by a spiral staircase from the kitchen is breath taking. It has spectacular far reaching sea views to the beaches of the little islands out to sea with many boats chugging backwards and forth taking visitors over to Ilha Da Armona and Ilha Derserta and others.
Fuseta is an amazing hidden gem of a place which everyone falls in love with after visiting once.
Thanks again for this review. Best wishes Penny

"Perfect base for golf holiday located in a traditional fishing village"

The apartment is spacious, clean, fully equipped and has a roof terrasse with a view, second to none. We have rented it for 8 weeks in January, February and March, where the nights can be cold, but the heating in all rooms was perfect. We have friends coming to visit us, and the apartment is perfect for 2 couples. We played golf every other day, and there are plenty of good golf courses nearby. We appreciate the indoor parking area in the basement, so that we can leave our golf equipment in the car. The other days we have explored the wonderful Algarve area. Sometimes we take the car, combined with walking trips, or we go by bicycle along with the coast. When we get tired, we take the train back. The station is 2 minutes from the apartment. There are plenty of small shops in Fuzeta, and recently a rather big supermarket has been opened. Do not miss the local indoor market. On Saturdays there are plenty of stalls also outside selling fresh fruit and vegetables. The fishing village of Fuzeta is very charming and you can meet the local people on the town square and only very few tourists. We appreciate that very much. The owner of this apartment is very effecient and kind, and her agent, Christina, is very helpful. We have already booked the apartment for 8 weeks in 2013.

Thank you very much for your review and I am delighted that you will be staying again in my apartment for your winter holiday in 2013.
Fuzeta in Winter is a quieter place but no less charming and the weather can be very warm , certainly warmer than the UK and Denmark!
I agree with you that the sea views from the apartment are second to none and I am really pleased that you will be spending your third consecutive winter holiday here. Penny

"Fabulous Fuseta"

The apartment was absolutely first class. It was modern, clean, well equipped and in an excellent location. The views from the apartment were stuning. It was nice being able to wander down to the beach bar and in the evening there were several very good restaurants within walking distance. I would also recommend Luis Romeira for car hire his service is very good we were met at the airport so there was no queueing the price he quoted included all the things that in the past we have been charged extra for and returning the car was very straightforward. Penny Ashton was very helpful and provided a very efficient service with lots of great tips and recommendations.

I really appreciate you taking the time to submit this favourable review and thank you for the feedback.
Fuseta is indeed a fabulous place and the apartment is well placed in the Village, being right next to the sea and just a 2 minute walk to the bars, shops and restaurants, and Village Beach and Square.
I have been recommending Luis Romero of Auto Season Altura for car hire for the past 10 years for good service, reliability and all inclusive prices with no hidden extras. There is never any need to queue to collect the car at the airport either as it is brought directly to you in the Arrivals Lounge!

"Early break in Fuseta"

Having visited the Central Algarve last year we wanted to see what lay to the East of Faro. We had a great stay in Fuseta at the end of March. The apartment was comfortable, well appointed, secure and had plenty of space. We didn't venture into the pool but the roof terrace provided good views and relaxing in the sun. Full details of the location were provided in advance and the local agent was very helpful when required on site.
Fuseta is a quiet, traditional Portugese fishing village. There is a beach onto the inlet but the best beaches are on the Ilha's. There are shops nearby and supermarkets on the Faro to Tavira road.

Thank you very much for taking the time to submit this review and I am really pleased that you had a lovely holiday in my apartment.

"An absolute gem of a place"

I had never heard of Fuseta before traveeling there this year for a week's break, although I have been to the Algarve before. I was delighted to find that Fuseta offers a more traditional experience of Portugal, while having ample restaurants and bars for our tatse. If you want to seep all day and club all night, this probably won't suit you (try Albufeira instead!).
The apartment is spacious and modern and the roof terrace is fabulous.
To get to the stunning beaches there is a ferry service for about one euro - it just takes 5 minutes to get you to the shore of the Atlantic and miles of beautiul sandy beaches.
The area has a lot to offer and being quite close to the Spanish border makes a trip to Spain quite do-able. We went to seville for the day, which I would recommend.
Prices in Fuseta were really quite cheap and eating out does not break the bank.
There are a couple of local supermarkets which will provide you with the basics, but food and wine was so reasonable at local restaurants we ate out every night.
As I said, this is a beautiful place, you have the sea and the estuary and the area is a nature reserve for all kinds of birds. It offers a tranquil get away and I hope to go again soon.

Thank you so much for your review and the apartment is very spacious having been built to a very high specification and being around a third as large again as a standard 2 bedroom apartment. One of its best features, however, is the very large roof terrace which is accessed via a spiral staircase off the kitchen. This roof terrace is exclusive to my apartment and I have provided a very large and sturdy parasol along with table and chairs seating 8 as well as sunbeds. Additionally there is another outdoor space off both the master bedroom and the lounge where a table and chairs are also supplied.
The beaches have to be seen to be believed and although I tried to capture them on my camera (see the website) I cannot really do them justice. I have visited Antigua, Jamaica and Barbados and I can honestly say that the beach at Ilha da Armona is not a patch on them, nor, indeed any other beach that I have visited and I am quite well travelled in the Northern Hemisphere at least.
As you have noted it is incredibly cheap to eat out in Fuseta, compared to other places in the Algarve and it is such a pretty village so let's hope that it stays that way for a long time to come. Thank again and I look forward to welcoming you back. Penny
