The Algarve region
The coastal towns of the eastern Algarve are 'real' towns, far more under-developed than those in the Central and Western area of the Algarve.
If you are after a more relaxed style of holiday, away from the hordes of tourists and water parks, then the Eastern Algarve may be the place for you.
Why is it so undeveloped? The reason for this is probably because the towns along the coast are not generally right on the sea. They are separated from the Atlantic by salt-pans, marshland and lagoons. These form part of the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve which stretches from just south of Faro along the coast to the town of Vila Nova de Cacela, a few kilometres west of the Rio Guadiana river on the Spanish border.
The headquarters of the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve at Quinta Marim is worth a visit.
The beaches you'll find along the coast are to be found on long sandy islands and outcrops. Because of this, little development of hotels has been possible, and should therefore keep the area quieter than other areas in the Algarve.
The wetlands of the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve make this area of coastline, wild and interesting, in contrast to the red sandstone cliffs of the central Algarve and the rugged coastline in the west.
Further inland, the area is completely undeveloped. Small rustic villages nestle in the remote countryside. You'll find the local inhabitants going about their daily business, the same today as they did many generations before.
Fuzeta is a quiet fishing village of the eastern Algarve, about 8km from the typical town of Olhao, 12km from the historic town of Tavira, where you can experience the many delicious sweets of Algarve, and 17km from Faro, capital of the Algarve, a region near monuments as interesting as Roman ruins and Baroque palaces.
Fuzeta Island is a beautiful beach with crystal clear warm water that stretches for several kilometers of golden sand. It is situated in the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a protected area that consists of several islands. Access to the island is via boat. The pier is located just 5 minutes walk from the apartment and the boat ride lasts 10 minutes. During the holidays there are regular connections by boat and outside these periods a water taxi can be hired.
There is also a quiet and pleasant beach on the lagoon situated 5 minutes walk from the apartment that is ideal for families with small children since is wave free and very safe. When the tide is out is an excellent opportunity to explore the very rich shore.
Both the island and the lagoon are very suitable for the practice of water sports as sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. There are also many other fantastic beaches nearby, ideal for lovers of water sports.
Be enchanted with a relaxing boat ride through the islands while observing the many species of waterfowl in one of the most important natural reserves in Europe.
Walkers and cyclists can use the many trials existing in Ria Formosa Natural Park and enjoy the scenic views. It is easy to rent bycicles in Fuzeta.
For golf enthusiasts, there are numerous golf courses within a radius of 30 km, as the famous golf resort of Quinta do Lago, standing the closest only 4km far away.
There is also a train station just 5 minutes walk from the apartment that can allow a relaxing trip to some of the main towns in Algarve.
In Fuzeta there are many bars and restaurants with the delicious dishes of traditional food as the always fresh grilled fish and a big variety of seafood. There is also a local market which is open every mornings, except on Sundays, with a great amount of fresh fishes, vegetables and fruits. On Saturday mornings there is always the presence of people selling genuine and high quality local produts. There is also a large supermarket in the centre of Fuzeta that is open 7 days a week.
Fuzeta has a street market on Thursdays and a flea market on the first Sunday of the month.
In Summer (July) there is a boat procession, in honour of the town's fishermen, with the boats being decorated with flags and flowers. There are also during Summer some music festivals in Fuzeta.
