The Algarve region
The Eastern Algarve is the lesser touristic side of the Algarve -miles of unspoilt beaches and full of local life and typical charming fishing villages. If you hire a car you can have the best of both worlds-lazy relaxing days by the pool or on the beautiful sandy beaches and great days out discovering the Algarve or neighbouring Spain.
There's plenty to see such as the Historical towns of Lagos & Silves or the Romas Spa town of Monchique nestled in the Monchique mountains.
For the young or young at heart there's Waterparks, Sealife parks, Water sports and Go Karting within a 40 minute drive and for the Golf fans there are 5 courses within a 20 minute drive.
Fuseta is a small fishing village forming part of the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve so the landscape is wonderful for bird watching. It has all the amenities you may require with shops, markets, cafes and traditional Portuguese restaurants.
Fuseta has two beaches. The first, which the locals call “Praia dos Tesos” is a small beach on the mainland. Families with small children will appreciate it as being in the lagoon there are no waves and very safe. It is within 5-10 min walk of Formosa Village complex.
Fuseta's other beach is on Ilha de Armona, the small island separating the lagoon from the Atlantic Ocean. You can also swim here on the lagoon side without waves. However, the 'real' Fuseta beach is on the Atlantic side. Children love the exitement of going over on the ferry boat which runs regularly over to the islands.
Fuseta offers a great base for your holiday and as it is not a traditional tourist resort your euros will go much further especially in the fantastic restaurants where a full meal for two with wine would be in the region of 25 euros.
The picturesque Roman town of Tavira is close by (approx 20km) and is classed as the capital of the Eastern Algarve -centred along the River Gil that splits the town in two parts.
Olhao is also well worth a visit (approx 7kms) and famous for the cube style houses and old elegant merchant's homes with wrought iron balconies and carved stonework. Just as well known are the fish restaurants along the promenade and the Moorish style daily fish market.
The capital of the Algarve; Faro is approx a 20 min drive or you can even catch the train form Fuseta to see the great shops and a mix of old and new with the modern Marina that lies right next to the Old Town.
As Fuseta lies close to the Spanish border a highly recommended day out is to the fantastic city of Seville . With outstanding architecture at every turn the best way to see the city is in a traditonal horse and carriage. You will need an early start to see the Maria Luisa Park, Plaza da Espana, the largest Gothic Cathedral in the world plus the gardens of the Royal Alcazar Palace.
