Enquire nowThe Algarve / East Algarve region
The Algarve is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Every year tourists in their thousands flock to the south of Portugal to soak up the sun and relax in this European paradise.
The Algarve is full of history and heritage. Still standing today are buildings and walls dating back to the Roman times. You are never far from a museum or guided tour to allow you to gain a more in depth insight into the evolution of this beautiful region.
The Algarve has the best all round climate in the whole of Europe and can boast more sunshine hours than California!
Average temperatures range from 16º-17º in January and February, 22º in October to 29º-30º or higher in August.
Temperatures never fall below zero.
With over 100 miles of beautiful cliff faces and extensive golden beaches, the Algarve offers one of the most dramatic coastlines in the world.
There is something for everyone, a relaxing day at an intimate cove, walking along the golden beaches, joining in with the water sports or just taking in the many different sight seeing tours in the local towns.
The Fuzeta / Bias do Sul area
FUZETA
Fuzeta is a small town in the Ria Formosa in the eastern Algarve only 20 kms from Faro.
The famous working fishing boats leave from one end of the key and the passenger ferry and other small boats leave from the other side.
Fuzeta was originally a collection of small huts kept to store tools for fishing boats and now has developed and increased in population but is still very traditional and untouristic.
The town which is located on the coast is known for it's quaint cubed houses with their terraces and interesting chimneys and is a trademark of this part of the Algarve.
Fuzeta has the added bonus of two beaches within walking distance of the apartment. The first is a small beach on the lagoon in the town itself and is literally 12 minutes walk for the apartment. It is busy in August but the rest of the year very calm. When the tide is in it is great to swim and when the tide is out, you are reduced to paddling and exploring the shore. Families with younger children will love it being wave free and very safe.
The ocean beach is just across the lagoon on the Island of Armona and is easily reached by a short, cheap and frequent ferry ride. The Ocean beach extends for miles so those seeking more peace and privacy can walk 10 minutes to have the beach almost to themselves! Spend the day here and relax in the restaurant, bars and cafes.
The square as you walk into Fuzeta has many cafes selling tempting cakes and freshly cooked bread. There is a pizza bar, many different restaurants for meat, fish and chicken or try one of the traditional Portuguese dishes in the cafes along the waterfront. Smell the delicious chickens roasting on the BBqs on almost every street corner.
Fuzeta has a street market on Thursdays and a flea market on the first Sunday of the month.
For some strange reason Fuzeta has two train stations, Fuzeta A only being 8 minutes walk from the apartment. The single line runs along the coast and stops in most of the towns so if you are looking to visit the many charming and historical towns then it is very cheap and easy. Why not take the train to Villa Real San Antonio on the Spanish border or one of the popular towns on the west side, all the way to Lagos.
There is a newly renovated produce market situated on the quay which is open every morning, except Sundays, where you can buy all your fresh fish, meat, vegetables and fruit. On Saturday morning the market is surrounded outside by many smaller stall offering further local produce.
Also we benefit from a large supermarket situated at one end of Fuzeta that sells fresh bread, meat, produce and has a large dairy section and wine counter.
The town lies on the Algarve Ecoway, the coastal foot and cycle path, along which you can now walk east to Arroteia or Pinheiro or west to Olhao. You could always get the train back!
Having explored the cobbled back streets and through the houses you will come across all amenities from the bank to the post office, many little supermarkets, chemists, bakery, newsagents, tourist shops and cash point.
Every July there is a festival, a ceremony acting as a blessing for the town's fishermen for the coming year. Many boats participate and are decorated with flags and flowers all sounding their horns or hooters. The whole village is out in force and is a sight to see!
There are play parks and an artificial football pitch, an area where the locals play boules and at night in the peak of the summer the whole place is buzzing with families socialising and live bands playing.
OLHAO
Olhao - pronounced OL EE OW is situated in the heart of the Ria Formosa Natural park. The town has continued to pursue it's main livelihood of fishing whilst earning a reputation as a beautiful holiday destination.
The sandbanks, salt pans and long stretches of golden beaches add to the timeless allure of this attractive region.
The fishing industry continues to capture the interest of all who visit Olhao. Whether it be the fisherman's quarters of the old part of town with their curious cubist-shaped houses and moorish flat roofs, the morning buzz of the fish/meat /veg and fruit markets by the waterfront or the boats at the harbor returning with their catches.
The town is a hive of activity and a picturesque mixture of sounds, colours and smells. A walk around the historical center through the cobbled streets that takes you past the 17th century church or a visit the Ria shopping mall, catch a movie, browse around the many shops or simple while the day away watching the boats on the waterfront enjoying the hustle and bustle of the busy locals.
Leaving the town behind and crossing the maze of canals, sand banks and marshes of the beautiful Ria Formosa lie the long sandy dunes of Armona, Culatra and Farol islands, accessable by the ferry.
GOLF - There are 7 main golf courses on the Eastern Algarve - In order, the nearest to Fuzeta to the Spanish border.
COLINA VERDE - MARAGOTA - 9 Hole
With it´s eight par-3´s and one par-4 (the second), range nets, putting green and chipping area, this Executive golf course is suitable for players of all levels. Straight forward enough to be enjoyable for beginners but also testing enough for experienced players wishing to sharpen their iron play and short game. In either case, it is a relaxing and pleasant experience and an ideal location for the professionals wishing to train groups or individuals. With an already famous long uphill 4th, the 5th is however the signature hole with a long Par 3 before landing on a semi-island green. This beautifully landscaped course, with it´s quality greens, spreads out in front of the luxury Aparthotel across undulating fairways with magnificent views both inland and out to sea.
BENAMOR - 18 Hole
The first course to open to the east of the capital of the Algarve, Faro , lies between the Tavira coast and uplands of the Serra do Caldeirão. The course offers views both southward out to the Atlantic ocean and northward towards the hinterland with its striking hills and fertile valleys. The par-4 (308m) opening hole provides a gentle introduction to the course. A slight dog-leg to the right leads to an elevated and generous green with bunkers on each side. An accurate second shot will be rewarded with the change of an early par. Many of the par 4's on this first nine are relatively short and with pleasant views over the undulating terrain.
QUINTA DA RIA
This spectacular 18 hole golf course is in the Ria Formosa Natural Park and spreads along an almost flat surface of 660.000 square metres down to the Ria Formosa itself, hanging over it and with a stunning view of the sea. It is a PAR 72, comprising two loops of 9 holes and each loop with 2 PAR 5, five PAR 4 and two PAR 3 holes. The greens are smoothly undulating and well protected by bunkers. Greens, tees and fairways are covered with Bent Crenshaw and the roughs with Poa Pretensis with Fescuas. More than 300 trees, such as olive and carob trees have been transplanted in order to maintain the ancient border of the course and the typical features of the region landscape.
QUINTA DA CIMA - 18 Hole
Quinta da Cima is a championship-style course of great character. Running thematically through the stunning layout is a series of lakes connected by a stream, which architect William ‘Rocky’ Roquemore has skilfully incorporated as added challenge to players. A stream with dams and permanent flowing water crosses holes 4, 5, 6 and 13. The course is bordered to the north by the National Road 125 and spreads to the south, where its limits are a municipal road that leads to the Ria Course. The greens have been seeded with Bent Crenshaw. Tees and fairways are covered with Zoysia.
MONTE REI - 18 Hole
The Monte Rei Golf Club is set in the picturesque foothills of the Eastern Algarve, with sweeping views of the Serra do Caldeirão mountains to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. The first of two Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses - "Monte Rei North" - opened for play in June 2007. This par 72 Championship course measuring 6567m from the Tournament tees is a truly unique design; with water coming into play on eleven of the eighteen holes, the course features an enjoyable series of eight par-4s, five par-3s and five par-5s in a challenging and distinctive layout. The course presentation is highly individual, each hole a design gem blending effortlessly into this natural canvas, from its ingenious shape and sculptured bunkers, to the impressive presentation and attention to detail making ever hole as remarkable as the next; fairways and greens are bordered by several lakes, indigenous plants, native grasses and trees adding drama to the landscape, and providing golfers with unforgettable moments to cherish in this unique and tranquil golf environment.
CASTO MARIM - 18 Hole
As well as commanding views of the ocean, the most easterly course in the Algarve overlooks the broad estuary of Guadiana river which forms the border between Portugal and Spain. The course is within the Castro Marim Golf & Country Club which takes its name from a nearby village famous for its medieval castle. There is a backdrop of rounded hills that roll northwards towards the Portuguese province of Alentejo. From the very start, the over-riding characteristics of this course are clear. At 375 metres downhill, the par-4 first may not appear too strenuous, but as you stand on the elevated tee you can soon see why it is rated stroke index 4. The fairway is narrow and lined with young umbrella pine trees. It drops away but climbs to the elevated green. The contours of the land must be carefully kept in mind as you decide where to place your drive.
QUINTA DO VALE - 18 Hole
Designed by Severiano Ballesteros, Quinta do Vale Golf Resort features an 18-hole Championship layout including 6 Par-5´s, 6 Par-4´s and 6 Par-3´s.
Marvelously integrated in the landscape and with a luxurious view over the Guadiana River, the course sits into a natural valley always overlooked from the Clubhouse.
At Quinta do Vale, players will notice Seve´s creativity as well as his promise:“To please everyone no matter what their handicap is”.
Numerous dogleg holes, wide fairways and obstacles enhance the course quality and its breath-taking surroundings. The challenge awaits you at Quinta do Vale Golf Resort.
BIRDWATCHING
The Ria Formosa natural park with it's salt pans, marshes, lakes and wetlands is a haven for birds and bird watchers alike. Anywhere between Cape St. Vincent and Vila Real (extreme west to east) will put you near a great spot for seeing many lovely species such as white stork, bustard, black-shouldered kite, hoopoe and many more.
There are guided bird watching tours available from Fuzeta waterfront.

The apartment was very easy to find driving from Faro airport and just a short journey too - under 40 mins. We were give a friendly welcome with the keys. This apartment is lovely and spacious. It's great for a couple but there's more than enough space for a family to be comfortable too, especially with the two large bathrooms. The living space is large with everything you could need to make your stay as comfortable as possible - from the TV, DVD player and stereo to the microwave and air con. The beds are incredibly comfortable - we slept so well and woke up refreshed! The balcony has the most wonderful view that changes from dawn to dusk as the tides go in and out - a lovely place to enjoy breakfast in the morning. You can see flamingos and fisherman and watch the little ferries shuttle sun-seekers across the lagoon to the lovely soft sandy beach on the dunes opposite. The roof terrace is the the perfect spot for catching some rays and when the sun goes down the hot tub is a must for budding astronomers! |
