The Highlands region

Argyll, in the West Highlands, is one of the most spectacular parts of Scotland with beautiful scenery, mountains, lochs and wildlife. It is an area steeped in history and offers a variety of activities. It is a wonderful area for hillwalking, bird watching, fishing and touring.

The cottage is perfect as a base for visiting Oban, Glencoe, Loch Lomond, the nearby islands and the Mull of Kintyre. It is an ideal place to explore the varied Argyll coast with sandy beaches, interesting coastal villages and wonderful sealife and wildlife.

Oban, the "Gateway to the Isles", is less than an hour's drive away and has sailings to the islands of Mull, Iona, Colonsay, Kerrera and other Hebridean islands. It is a busy fishing port with an 18 hole golf course, a cinema, an indoor pool, tennis and squash courts, a good choice of shops and restaurants and a lovely sandy beach at Ganavan Bay.

Travel north to Fort William, at the foot of Ben Nevis, and visit the magnificent mountains of Glencoe, renowned as a climbing and winter sports centre. Visit Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National park.

The city of Glasgow can be reached in an hour and a half and offers a wide variety of attractions and amenities including excellent shopping, theatres and museums.

Furnace, Inveraray / Argyll area

Lochfyneside, with its views to the hills and forests of the Cowal Peninsula, is in a stunning part of Argyll. Bird-watching, walking, diving, riding, golf and fishing are available locally. Red squirrel, pine martin, common seals, gannets, buzzard and golden eagle may all be seen nearby.

For lovers of Scottish culture there are events held locally throughout the year. The area has many excellent hotels and restaurants, many serving local seafood and other local produce. Treat yourself to a meal at the famous Loch Fyne Oyster Bar and Smokery.

Lochside Cottage, which is on the outskirts of Furnace village, has great views over Loch Fyne and is ideally situated for trips to Invereray (9 miles), with its famous castle, bell tower, historic jail, maritime museum, shops and restaurants. Furnace village has a pub and a local store and post office (1 mile).

Nearby are Crarae Glen Gardens (1 mile) and Auchindrain open air Highland village museum and archaeological site (4 miles).

Lochgilphead (15 miles) has local shops, bars and restaurants as well as sports facilities and a swimming pool.

Travel south to the harbour town of Tarbert, famous for its sailing festivals. Head to the Kintyre peninsula and take a ferry to explore the islands of Gigha, Arran and Islay or continue on until you reach Campbelltown.

Visit the Crinan Canal with its stepped locks. You can walk or drive a delightful route along its 9 mile length.

Historic Kilmartin Glen, with its museum, Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments, standing stones and burial cairns, should not be missed.

How to get there

The nearest major airport is Glasgow, around 65 miles away. It is served by most of the major car hire companies.

Travelling by car from Glasgow, take the M8 westbound, to junction 30. Cross over the Erskine Bridge and take the A82 along the side of Loch Lomond until Tarbet. Continue straight ahead on the A83 to Inveraray. At Inveraray, stay on the A83 through the town centre, following signs for Lochgilphead. Furnace is 9 miles from Inveraray on the A83. (Glasgow to Furnace takes about an hour and a half by car).
