The Madeira region

Madeira is a lovely sunny island off the coast of Portugal in the north Atlantic Ocean. It is a very popular destination because of its temperate climate and lush scenery. It is of course famous for Madeira wine, and there are plenty of cafes in which to enjoy this drink, as well as sample the delicious Madeira cuisine.

The house is located near the Old Town of Funchal (1.5 km downhill). Here are some of the best restaurants on the Island with various local and international cuisine.

In the Old Town also you can visit the Historical Centre of Madeira Museum and other interesting museums in Funchal. Particularly of interest are the wine museums and tasting parlors of major Madeiran wine companies. From the Old Town you also can take the cable car to the beautiful gardens of Jardim Botânico and Monte, though it is a short and lovely walk to the Jardim Botanico. Should you walk to the old city (recommended) you will come first to the famous fish, fruit and flower market of the Mercado dos Lavradores.

Madeira is famous for its lush vegetation, with all varieties of plants and flowers and its sub-tropical gardens. The Laurisilva forests of Madeira have been declared a World Heritage Monument. Here there are also many exciting and gorgeous Levada walks. There are two championship golf courses. Also there is ocean swimming, sailing, game fishing, etc.,in addition to the marina in Funchal with modern basins for yachts and motor boats.

Although the coast is dominated by cliffs, there is access to the ocean. Approximately 15m by car is the protected bay of Machico, with its fine golden sand beach good for swimming with children, and the natural refuge of the Deserta Islands are but a brief commercial boat ride away.
