Home description
´Quinta Elena´is a period property in a very central location only a short walk into town. Many restaurants, shops and supermarkets nearby. Swimming is available at the nearby Quinta Magnolia park or slightly further away at the Lido. We have also made special arrangements for our guests to have access to the pool and the sea at the Quinta Da Penta de Franca Hotel about a 10 minute walk away. Normally this would cost 15 Euros per person but our guests can go in and enjoy all the facilities of the pool, access to the sea and also the poolside restaurant with its special views of the Savoy Hotel swimming pools and of Reids Palace Hotel for only 7.5 Euros per person.
Back at the house itself - in the morning and up until 3.00pm there is the top terrace which is very sunny and where you have two sunbeds and an umbrella with a lovely view of Funchal, up to the mountains and also of the sea. In the afternoon you can then move across to the lower terrace for sunshine for the rest of the afternoon and early evening. Here you have a table and chairs and a sun lounger and lots of colourful pot plants. The views from this terrace include jacaranda trees, an avocada tree, some buildings and the sea.

The Madeira region
The Island of Madeira has a mild climate all year round with only a little variation in temperature. Apart from the City of Funchal there are many lovely interesting little villages to visit most of which are within a short bus ride from a stop quite close to the house. The rest of the Island can be reached by an excellent selection of bus services that start from the town centre. Two particular villages worth a visit are Camara De Lobos and Camacha also Curral de Freitas. Camara is where Sir Winston Churchill used to paint during his frequent visits in the 30´s. Camacha is well known for the wickerwork factory and quite a lot of our furniture in the house has come from this factory. Curral is a small inland mountain village famous for its Chestnuts, soup, puree, etc.
Funchal area
There are many festivals in Funchal - the main ones are the carnival held every year in February and the flower festival held in April. The tourist office in the centre of town would provide in detail all the places to go to and a list of what´s on. A very good day out is the ferry crossing to the Island of Porto Santo(you can fly there if you wish). Here is a rather dry Island and rather backward but it´s redeeming feature is the fantastic sandy beach that is many miles long. Tasting the Madeiran Wine is always a treat in store for visitors. There are, of course, many amazing gardens to visit on the Island and most of these are a short bus bus ride away. Well worth a visit is Monte with its interesting church and the famous Palace Gardens. Monte is accessible by Cable car and just for fun you could take the equally famous toboggan ride down to Livramento before finding your way back to the Centre of Funchal and then to our house -´Quinta Elena´.
How to get there
Many airlines fly to Madeira. It is not expensive to fly and the flight usually takes a little over 3 hours. Here is a selection of airlines - First Choice - XL - Easyjet - Thomson - TAP. Most of these fly from London Gatwick but there are many flights available from the regional airports in England. One such airline is Palmair which operates out of Bournemouth(Hurn) airport.

Further details indoors: The sitting room is a split level room with plenty of space for guests. There is also a dining area - next door is the kitchen and the design of this is typically Maderian. At this point there is a separate wc and wash hand basin. Up an elegant set of stairs your have three bedrooms - first of all the master bedroom with a large double bed(typically Maderian design), a dressing room and en-suite bathroom, also double doors to the lower terrace(already described). Then the second bedroom has a four poster bed of matching Madeiran design. The third bedroom is a single bedroom. On this level there is also the main bathroom, with bath(shower over), basin, bidet, and wc. Upstairs again to the delightful roof room with two newly installed velux windows to make the most of the views, and here you will find an adult sized day bed - effectively turning this room into a second sitting room or a fourth bedroom. From this room you gain access to the top terrace - already described.
Further details outdoors: The delightful front patio walled garden is like a little oasis since you are so close to all the amenities of Funchal. There are many different shrubs, trees and colourful plants both in flower beds and in pots. There is, of course, an outside table and chairs plus a wooden seat and other chairs. Álfresco´eating is the order of the day and the avocada tree provides some degree of shade necessary on the hotter days experienced on the Island.
A very short walk away is the delightful St. Catarina Park with exceptional town and harbour views and a great selection of flowering trees and shrubs, together with a lake with fountains.
Also the Casino is close by - with floor shows on four times per week, together with the usual gambling machines.

The cost of transporting you and your party from the airport to the house(a 30 minute taxi journey) is met by the owners.
The housekeeper will meet you soon after your arrival to settle you in.
If you require internet service please arrange for this service in advance and pay our housekeeper the 15 Euros charge per week.
Conditions
A returnable damage/cleaning deposit of £250 is required to be held. We require a booking deposit of 30% of the rental - the balance and damage deposit are both payable six weeks before the start of your stay.

NB: Prices may be subject to change at the owner's discretion. The house will sleep up to a maximum of six people with the use of the day bed in the top room. Extra people are charged at £75 per person per week. The house is not considered suitable for young children but well behaved older children are very welcome in our house. It is also a no smoking house. A returnable damage/cleaning deposit of £250 will be held. As soon as our housekeeper/caretaker has confirmed to us that all is well in the house after your departure we will arrange for the money to be returned to you. It may be possible, by special arrangement with the owners, for stays of less than a week to be enjoyed.
If there are only two people in your party then a 10% discount may be taken.
