The Madeira region
Thus, during most of the 17th century, Madeira suffered social and economic crisis. Only the port of Funchal continued commercial trade to Africa, America and India by exporting fancy pastries (casquinha) and sugared fruits.
In 1580 Phillip II of Spain invaded Portugal and Madeira following recurring friction between the two kingdoms. Spanish rule lasted just 60 years until 1640, when the Portuguese launched a successful uprising and seceded from Spain.
By the end of the 17th century, the Portuguese had lost the bulk of their empire, including most of the valuable East Indies territories.
To some extent the marriage of the Infanta Catherine of Braganza to Charles II of England salvaged the situation, by enabling a new period of economic growth for Madeira and forging a link between Madeira and Great Britain that is unbroken to this day. It was granted contracts to supply Madeiran wine to Great Britain and the British Indian and American colonies. By the early 18th century, Madeira was producing 45,000 barrels of wine of which annually 30,000 were for the export market.
During the early 19th century, Madeira once again encountered another economic recession. The end of the embargo of French wine, imposed during the Napoleonic wars, and subsequent restoration of peace in Europe led to greater demand for French wine and a decline in the popularity of Madeira.
However, within a few decades a new industry emerged - that of tourism. Since the middle of the 19th century, many visitors were tempted to Madeira for therapeutic reasons on the advice of English and German doctors. Madeira was recommended for its mild climate as this was deemed excellent treatment for chest complaints.
Since then, tourism has been one of the mainstays of the Madeiran economy, and it is without doubt that Madeira is one of the oldest tourist locations in the world.
Funchal / Santa Luzia, Madeira area
Events & Festivals The Madeiran culture, like that of Portugal, is dominated by a plethora of religious and secular feast days and holidays. As the capital of the island, Funchal hosts many of these celebrations.
Events Calendar:
Carnival: 17th to 20th February Carnival
Carnival season begins in February and marks the beginning of Lent. Like Lisbon and New Orleans, Funchal celebrates Mardi Gras with a parade (Cortejo Alegórico) and a costume ball (Carnaval Trapalhão).
More than 1,100 people participate as troupers, dancers, models, drivers, guides and musicians in the main procession on Saturday. A lot of effort goes into making sure that this event continues to be innovative and spectacular. Visitors come especially for the carnival from all over Europe, and even as far afield as the USA and Canada.
Each year, the Carnival is based on a different theme. But whatever the theme, the enjoyment continues long after the procession has ended as participants and spectators party late into the night and early morning.
Easter: 2nd to 15th April Flower Festival: 21st to 22nd April The Flower Festival April heralds the annual Flower Festival, which is the culmination of spring and celebration of the beautiful and exotic flowers with which Madeira is blessed.
For a flower lover this is a very special time of year. On the Saturday one can see the children's parade, when the 'wall of hope' is built.
On the Sunday a theme parade walks the streets of Funchal with over 1000 participants.
Throughout the Festival there is a flower exhibition, where local horticulturists display their best flowers and plants until the Wednesday of the next week.
Atlantic Firework Festival: 1st - 30th June Summer: Feast days and Festivals Summer Festivals Throughout the summer months Madeira is alive with celebration, from the feast days of Patron Saints to the numerous gastronomic festivals.
In June a more religious flavour accompanies the Feasts of the Popular Saints (Festas dos Santos Populares). These celebrate the lives of the important saints of Madeira and include the Festa de Santo António (St Anthony), Festa de São João (St John), and Festa de São Pedro (St Peter).
Madeira's gastronomic heritage is celebrated during the Festas Gastronómicas of July and August, and the Madeira Wine Rally (Rali Vinho Madeira) in August.
In addition to these main events, there are various local festivals, such as the Cherry Festival and the Beer Festival, throughout the year.
Wine Festival: 31st to 2nd September Christmas: 23rd - 26th December Christmas and New Year in Madeira In early December the Christmas lights are turned on and the whole Bay of Funchal, as well as many other villages nearby, lights up like a Christmas tree. Every tree, garden and street in the capital is decorated with multicoloured lights that make an amazing sight.
As you wander the main streets and squares you will come across the special seasonal exhibitions of local traditions and a beautiful 'nativity scene' is built in the heart of the town.
The highlight of this period is midnight on New Year's Eve, when there is a spectacular firework display over the Bay of Funchal, and in some private houses, that lasts until the early hours of the New Year.
