The Madeira region

Madeira

Madeira is a seven million-year old volcanic island. With 737km2, the island reaches a maximum altitude of 1861m at Pico Ruivo, presenting a rugged relief, with breathtaking views that will delight you and where you feel the exuberance of nature. Within half an hour by car, you can be nestled among huge mountain peaks or swimming in the warm waters of the Atlantic. Much of the landscape is made up of unique Laurissilva Forest (a UNESCO World Heritage Forest) and also a flower sanctuary. Several events are organised throughout the year such as the Flower Festival and the New Year's Eve Firework display, set against the backdrop of Funchal Bay.

It's where one you can enjoy diverse sports from the traditional (a must is walking on “Levadas”) to the more extreme. And there are other exotic islands to discover, such as Porto Santo, with a 9km golden sand beach. What else? Well, in 2013 the Madeira Islands won the Best European Island Destination award at the World Travel Awards (tourism's Oscars).

You will easily find out what else there is to enjoy at a destination under 3,5 hours by direct flight from the most important European cities and you will, undoubtedly, become a Madeira Ambassador.

Funchal

Funchal is Madeira's capital. It is a clean and safe city like no other. It's cosmopolitan place, where visitors are welcomed with pleasure and genuine friendship. When the hotels are crowded and the port is full of ships, it becomes an even greater cultural mix.

The city is blessed with a unique, deliciously mild climate, which feels like spring all year round. Over the course of the year, temperatures typically range from 18°C (64ºF) to 26°C (79ºF) and it rarely goes below 15°C (59ºF) or above 28°C (82ºF). If you experience Funchal's warmth, we can guarantee you will want to come back.

"Much more than expected. We had nothing to complain about."

We have just arrived from two weeks in Funchal, Madeira Island. We chose to stay in two apartments (a week in each one) of the same owner: Funchal Charming Apartments. The Lido Flat for swimming at the sea & sunbathing and the Old Town Flat to live like a local right in the middle of the Old Town.

We spent a fantastic time at the Lido Flat. In the morning, we usually went to Club Tourism beach, 5 minutes away from the flat, with a large solarium (with adults and children swimming pools) at sea level. It was sunny and the sea water was warm. After lunch we used to walk on Strada Monumental. Sometimes, until the centre of Funchal (20/30 minutes). Or on the Lido Promenade which is a lovely path, most of time by the sea, that reaches the pretty/cosy fishermen small town of Câmara Lobos. At night, we went to several delicious nearby restaurants (Cipriani, Paradise and Il Basilico are our tips) and to Hole in one Bar for after dinner drinks.

The Lido Flat was much more than expected. Located on the buzzy Strada Monumental, but silent (5th floor and just a few cars on a single lane one way traffic Strada Monumental - some works there to be finished in August as I was told, but no noise at all)). With a beautifully decorated bedroom and siting/dining room, with windows/door with windows overlooking the sea and open to a great balcony with splendid infinity sea views, with a table for 4, chairs for relaxing and much more. We had nothing to complain about.

Last but not the least, Vera, please accept our thanks for allowing us to stay at your apartments, for the excellence service you provided us, including the delightful welcome pack in both apartments and the transfer from one to the other flat.

We can hardly wait to come back.

"The view from the balcony is to die for"

Had a fantastic time at Madeira two weeks ago.

Upon arrival we received a welcome pack (the Madeira wine and the honey cake were delicious and the white wine was great) & were shown our apartment. The apartment was very clean & had more than everything we needed for a perfect stay.

Although right a few steps away from several beaches and promenades, with lots of things going on, for more chilled out, you do not need to look elsewhere. The location of the apartment is quiet and peaceful. And the view from the balcony is to die for.

Its style of decoration is eclectic/cool/casual/chic. A mixed of patterns and textures make the apartment really welcoming. As I love. When I started un-packing I felt like I was in my house!

Our experience was perfect and we will be returning with our children soon!

"Fantastic apartment. Hip & Cool. Best location"

We are a couple with two kids, from Madrid, living in Madeira, for professional reasons, during certain periods of the year. We have an apartment nearby (Lido is for us the nº1 area in Funchal: best weather, several fantastic beaches, lots of restaurants and bars, Estrada Monumental & Lido Promenade!) but we needed to stay away from our apartment during 3 days, that's why we chose to stay at the Lido Flat.

Wow! What a happy decision! What an apartment!

It was, for sure, totally refurbished a couple of days ago (you may even smell a little bit of inks recently dried), but by someone with a sophisticated taste. Not as usual that you buy lots of stuff to put in places. No! There are some nice antiques, some chairs in traditional wickerwork (but painted with lovely colours), some brand new and confortable pieces of design furniture, in an exciting mix of styles. With colour modern paintings and others. Maritime and beach touches. Hip and cool, no doubt! Kitchen small but cosy with everything (brand new stuff!) you need to cook whatever you wish (although there are a bbc at the balcony and a supermarket at the 0 floor with tasty take away food for those, as myself, that does not like to cook). Wonderful bathroom with tiles painted in salmon. Huge bedroom. Beautiful sky blue and very confortable beds. Plenty of space for clothes. With and antique (and funny) secretary table. You may work on it, enjoying, at the same moment, the magical ocean views. The living room is also large with a table for 4, two sofas beds, etc. Our kids with 18/16 years told me that they slept very well with no problems (also we did - in spite of being at the Estrada Monumental, the street, in front of the apartment, just has one single direction and the flat is on 4th floor, therefore, at night, there is no noise at all). Ipad, DVD player, movies and books, nothing is missing.

But the best place to be is at the balcony. Huge. Table for 4. Sunbath/relaxing furniture. Candles. What a romantic atmosphere! Gorgeous views to the sea really close. No words to describe.

I would highly recommend the lovely Lido Flat to everyone.

Vera, we did not meet but if it was you the responsible for the decoration, please accept my congratulations. Thank you for a professional and friendly service: booking, meet & greet, welcome pack (the honey cake was delicious!), amenities, etc.

Saludos. Alba, Antonio, Marcela y Dante

PS. This review was dictated by my wife, Alba. She pressed myself to write it. And she (and the kids) is demanding that we moved, definitely, to the Lido Flat!!!
