The Royal Savoy rapidly gained a reputation as a premier resort hotel, and has several times secured one of the top spots in the Daily Telegraph's annual search for the "Best Resort Hotel in the World".
This is a superb, fully serviced apartment on the hotel "Rotunda", with a kitchen (fitted dishwasher), very spacious lounge/dining room with two good bedrooms, each with TV (with good range of programmes in English and other European languages). The master bedroom is a large, double aspect room with full en-suite bathroom and walk-in dressing room. The second, good-sized bedroom has a separate bathroom. The lounge and both bedrooms lead onto two large, separate but linked balconies overlooking the pool area and stunning sea views. The apartment sleeps four in complete privacy, and can accommodate 6 adults in comfort using the large convertible sofa in the lounge dining/room.
The Hotel boasts two outdoor swimming pools (one heated), a children's pool, jacuzzi, heated indoor pool, sauna, and fitness room. There is great sea bathing here - crystal clear waters - but please note access is via steps and there are no shallows where you can stand. The beach itself is very rocky and is not for sitting on! About this location
The Madeira Islands region
Madeira has been famous as a holiday destination since Winston Churchill used to come and paint here - and Christopher Columbus lived for a time on Porto Santo, a small island just off the coast! With a mild, warm climate, Madeira is a great place to visit at all times of the year - and of course the climate means there are lots of superb gardens to visit - the flowers are wonderful all year long.
And Funchal is THE place to be - a great capital, and a superb holiday location with wonderful restaurants, and loads of places of interest.
Funchal is the capital of the island, and is great for shopping and eating out, the centre being about 10 minutes walk down the hill from the hotel - and only a few euros (less than 5) to come back up the hill by taxi, or it's even cheaper by bus!
Eating out is wonderful here - a vast range of restaurants, reasonably priced and all excellent value.
Madeira is famous for walking - from easy, short walks along the levadas (irrigation channels) to strenuous mountain walks with stunning views. You can arrange your own walks using the extensive cheap bus networks (the guide books for walkers show you which buses to catch to get there and back, and when they run), or go by taxi or on guided walks in small parties (recommended for the more strenuous walks).
There are several golf courses with a great reputation in the Funchal area.
THere is plenty of deep sea fishing (including the chance of blue marlin), dolphin and whale watching, and you can even cruise the coast on a replica of Columbus' boat the Santa Maria.
And don't forget to sample the local Madeira wine, and see how it is made!
