Home description
Casa El Regüelo is a charmingly restored holiday home which sits in a peaceful hamlet on a quiet country road between Fuensanta de Martos and Castillo de Locubin.
This is a place for soaking up the silence and relaxing, admiring the view or strolling along the quiet roads or country tracks among the olive trees. From the patio there are lovely hill views and olive groves! You can sit in private with a glass of local wine in hand and inhale the peace, watch the birds and listen to the humming of the bees and chattering of the swallows. If you're looking for a time out nature watching and quiet, interspersed with day trips into glorious countryside or historical towns then this is a good base.
The house is available to rent all year round, but please bear in mind that even though the sun shines nearly every day, it can get pretty cold in winter. This is the area called Sierra Sur de Jaen and it's well inland and about 1,000 metres above sea level, snow is not unheard of here. These cooler days of winter and spring can make excellent walking weather of which they is no end of possibilities right from the front door or back garden gate.

The Inland Andalucia / Jaen Province region
Andalucia, the region, covers the South of Spain from the Mediterranean Sea in Almeria to the Atlantic Ocean and Portuguese coast of Huelva, it's as diverse as its size with over 800 metres of coastline, from small rocky coves to long golden sandy beaches. As a holiday destination Andalucia has more than enough to cater for every whim. This is the home of sherry, fiestas, music and flamenco. Vibrant sun-scorched cities offer their fascinating history and an education that spans the centuries of conflict between different races.
As a great destination, Andalucia offers any type of holiday you can imagine - walking, flying lessons, horse riding, climbing, diving, culture, gastronomy and of course those fantastic Moorish monuments, The Alhambra Palace in Granada, The Mezquita in Cordoba and The Alcazar in Sevilla, among countless others.
Jaén has been named paraiso interior or inland paradise by the regional government. It's far off the beaten track and has only in the last few years been seen as a tourist destination by non -Spanish travellers. You can see it approaching with undulating hills covered with marching silvery-leaved olive trees - this is Spain's top olive oil producing area, producing over 10% of the world olive oil production. With more olive trees than people and the largest natural park in Spain as just one of its protected areas, it's not hard to find excellent walking country and plenty of freedom from the fast pace of life.
From the Despeñaperros in the north and its border with Castilla La Mancha to the Sierra Sur in the south, the scenery rolls out before you. Jaen maybe less well-known that its neighbours, Cordoba and Granada but it can hold its own with an enormous Renaissance cathedral in Jaen city and a wealth of other UNESCO monuments in Ubeda and Baeza.
Fuensanta de Martos / El Reguelo area
El Reguelo is an agricultural hamlet with no shops or bars, just mules and goats, peace and quiet and neighbours who don't speak English. If you want to practice your Spanish this is the place to do it!
The nearest town for shopping is Fuensanta 6 km away, and for larger supermarkets its Martos 18km away. WIthin 1.5 hours you can drive to Baeza, Cordoba, Granada, Jaen and Ubeda for some incredible Mooorish and Renaissance buildings.
The largest natural park in Spain is a good day trip away with peddle boats on the huge lake, glorious scenery and lots of flora and fauna. Or from the doorstop you can walk between olive tress, admire the scenery, draw or take photographs, or simply sit with your feet in the dip pool and drink in the tranquility along with a local wine of course.
We can arrange guided walk holidays here in Jaen or just individual walks through the olive groves and hills around the house, please email us with your requirements and we'll do our best to arrange it for you.
How to get there
Fly into Granada or Malaga airport with Ryanair or Easyjet amongst others.
The drive from Granada airport takes around 80 minutes and from Malaga airport around 2.5 hours.
Driving in Spain is easy and stress-free, it's a big country with a smallish population and the roads (unless you're heading for the coast) are not busy. Enjoy a leisurely drive from the airport, taking in the view and stopping when and where you want.
This is real rural Spain, peace and quite rule, hear the birds singing and the frogs croaking, cockerels crowing and dogs barking.
