The Old Distillery
About the home
In an enchanting setting where only a short distance away runs a mountain stream which can be heard below as it babbles its way along through the valley, there is this pretty, self catering, holiday villa in Frigiliana. The Old Distillery (El Alambique Antiguo) was an old farmhouse which, during the middle of the last century, used to be a distillery. It enjoys a priviledged position as it is fully south facing and only 7 minutes walk to the village of Frigiliana on a level, surfaced country lane. Leave the car at the villa and just quickly pop into the village to meet up with friends for a drink or an evening meal in any one of the excellent restaurants, and then walk back home afterwards!
The accommodation is perfect for small families, couples or anyone just looking for a relaxing, rural environment but still within walking distance to the village of Frigiliana for stocking up and stepping out. The villa is positioned on gently sloping land covered in wild thyme, lavender and rosemary and overlooking a winding country road. Enjoy the maximum benefit of eating outside on sunny winter days on the large south facing terrace or just chilling with friends and family on comfortable outdoor lounging by the swimming pool. It may also come as a surprise to know that there is so much to do in and around Frigiliana.

Further details indoors:
The original country house has been completely renovated and improved, keeping as much of the original features as possible, such as its thick walls which serve to keep the house warmer in winter and cooler in summer. The living accommodation is all on one level. The two double bedrooms and two bathrooms were the original stables and the rest of the house was the original distillery area. One of the bedrooms has direct access to a secluded terrace with morning sun and views up into the mountains. The high ceilings with their exposed beams create a spacious, bright and airy feeling. The windows and doors were enlarged to provide more interior light and there are several doorways for easy access to the various terraces. Windows and doors are hermetic, double glazed and of tropical hard wood.
The main bedroom is en suite and incredibly spacious with two large windows letting in lots of light. A fabulous four poster queen size bed and armoire add a stately and sophisticated touch. The bathroom has a large walk-in shower stall of 90 x 90cm.
The second bedroom has a huge fitted cupboard and two twin beds measuring 1,90 x 1,00m **which have been designed to be able to be joined together to make one huge king size bed** - ideal for couples! There is also a writing desk and chair in this room. This bedroom has two doors leading out onto a secluded and spacious south-east facing terrace with table and chairs and garden bench.
The kitchen is bright and deceptively spacious. It is very well equipped and includes, among the other kitchen appliances already listed: electric oven, range hood, hand held food mixer, electric juicer, French press, lots of crockery, serving dishes, etc., tea set, BBQ implements, and other accoutrements. There is loads of counter space and under-counter storage as well, not to mention a large and separate larder which doubles as a laundry room with lots of storage space. There is also a huge country-style porcelain sink which makes washing up a dream.
The house is exquisitely furnished with furniture of various eras, with an interesting mix of antique and modern, and is full of interesting pictures in all rooms. For the hot summer months, there are ceiling fans in all rooms. For winter lets, heating is supplied by a powerful 13kW pellet stove which is capable of heating the entire house. Pellets are included for winter lets of 2 weeks or less. For longer lets, pellets are provided at cost. Bed linen and towels are included. For stays of more than a week, extra sheets and towels are provided.
There is freeview satellite TV and pay-as-you-go internet. There is also a free WiFi connection but only functional with iPhones.
Further details outdoors:
The villa enjoys uninterrupted views of the surrounding countryside and down the valley through the avocado and mango plantations to the sea in the distance. The exterior is furnished for pleasant outdoor dining and comfortable outdoor lounging. The secluded and quiet back patio is perhaps the best place for having one's early morning breakfast, catching the first rays of sun as they spill over the hillside.
The wide, covered front terrace is perhaps the best place for having one's lunch or a quick midday snack and watching the occasional passerby on their way into the village. As the day heats up, get into the swimming pool; soak and chill while the barbeque sizzles away, or simply sprawl out on a lounger with a drink in hand, a bowl of munchies and some good music and take in the sun and the sweet breeze.
From the living room, one can easily see the pool and terrace, good for keeping an eye on the little ones. As an added feature, the pool ladder can be unlatched and removed for added safety when the swimming pool is not in use. Pool depth is 1.2m. When the fruit trees are in season, guests are welcome to pick lemons, oranges, lime, grapefruit, melons or guava, as well as fresh herbs from the herb garden.
The house is surrounded by newly planted landscaping with flower beds, flowering vines and fruit trees. The property is fully fenced and gated. The large parking area is well lit at night and there is sufficient parking space in the driveway for at least 2 cars, with additional parking in front of the house.
I have also set up a compost bin in the garden so that any organic waste from the kitchen can be thrown in.

The Costa del Sol region

Frigiliana is a stunning and captivating, award-winning white-washed village surrounded by a natural park 300m above sea level and just seven kilometres directly inland from the well known coastal resort of Nerja on the eastern Costa del Sol. The climate is very similar to that of Nerja and the rest of the Costa del Sol, but the air is drier.
The Frigiliana old town dates back to the Phoenicians. It is also known as the village of the three cultures - Muslim, Jewish and Christian - who all lived happily together in the Middle Ages before the Inquisition. The ancient architecture of the village is extremely well preserved and entices thorough investigation of all its very narrow and winding cobblestoned streets with dazzlingly white stone walls on either side with prettily painted doors and windows and black wrought iron balconies with hanging flowers. Frigiliana has won many awards for its efforts in maintaining its architectural and historical integrity and for being considered one of the best preserved and prettiest villages in Andalucia.
The Frigiliana / El Tejar area
Remarkably, despite progress and modernity, the village has managed to remain quaint, rural and laid back. You can easily get locally grown provisions in any one of the many food shops or the mini-mart which is just an eight minute walk from the house and at the entrance to the village.
The villa is in a very privileged location on a level, surfaced country road with views through fruit plantations down the valley to the sea. Whether you just fancy a quiet stroll into the village for a drink in the evening or to have a meal in one of the many excellent restaurants, it takes approximately 5-8 minutes to get there walking. My lovely, elderly Mum takes just 8 minutes to get from the villa to the village. Bless her!
The old country life still abounds. Almost every evening, Sebastian, the local shepherd, passes by on his way home with his herd of goats after grazing on the surrounding hills. Yoked oxen sometimes slowly make their way past the house as well.
Frigiliana is in the beautiful natural park Sierra de Alhama, Tejeda y Almijara, dominated by pine and oak trees, and is becoming recognised as a walking/trekking hotspot. There are a variety of trails and routes to choose from with many interesting features to see on some of the routes. The house is located at the beginning of one of the routes and there are wooden stakes at intervals along the road to indicate the route. I also provide trail guides and information booklets on the various walks which contain detailed itineraries and maps. For the more advanced, ordnance survey maps can be purchased at a shop in Nerja. Historically, the people of Frigiliana and Nerja used to trek across the mountains over into Granada to trade and barter. Some of the original routes still exist and it is still possible to cross over into Granada this way.
You can also go on horseback excursions in the countryside around the village and into the wilder sierra. Fishing trips to the lake in La Viñuela can also be arranged. Please enquire! I can also arrange for a local guide to take you into the sierra on wildlife watching, bird watching and photographic excursions. The sierra around Frigiliana is replete with wildlife. There are four species of eagle, owls, vultures, peregrine falcon, mountain goats, wild boar, foxes, squirrels, common genet, snakes and other smaller reptiles, many birds and amphibians.
There is even an excellent sports centre in the old town with a fully equipped gym, large pool, squash, badminton, aerobics, yoga, pilates, etc.. Even if you're here for just a week, you can pay a small fee (I think it's 30 euros last time I checked) and have full use of the facilities. Before or upon your arrival, I can provide further information on these and any other activity which may be of interest.
MARKET DAY in Frigiliana is on a Thursday and is held in the centre of the village right in front of the bus stop and taxi rank. It is always bustling and there is a multitude of stalls with various goods available. But, if you are looking for fresh fruit and vegetables, try and fit yourself somehow into the crowd gathered around Antonio's van. He prices his produce by the kilo and I certainly have never been given the weight for which I paid. His business model has a critical flaw - he doesn't use a scale, so don't be surprised if you get twice or even three times as much as what you had originally expected or bargained for!

GETTING TO FRIGILIANA:
Upon arrival at Malaga airport, you will need to get to Frigiliana. Frigiliana is approximately 70 kilometres away from Malaga airport. If you hire a car, it takes approximately 45 minutes to get from Malaga to Frigiliana travelling east along the coastal motorway. Get off the motorway at Exit 292 for Nerja/Frigiliana and follow the directions for Frigiliana, taking the "B" class road which is in excellent condition, up into the mountains for about 8 minutes until you arrive at Frigiliana.
Upon making your booking, whether you opt on making your own way to the house or not, you will be provided with a detailed map and explanation of how to get to the villa from the village.
If you do not plan on hiring a car, you still have the following options for getting to the villa:
OPTION 1 - VIP PICK-UP: **Personalised airport transfer is offered by the owner, stress-free for you and with a friendly and fearsomely charming English speaking driver!** Please enquire!
OPTION 2 - TAXI: Take a taxi from the airport directly to the accommodation. Charges are per single trip. The cheapest way of doing this is by pre-booking a taxi which costs approximately 85 euros. A non-booked taxi could cost anywhere from 90 euros minimum, and if you arrive on an evening or night flight, this price goes up even more.
OPTION 3 - COACH: Very frequent and reliable coach service between MALAGA CITY CENTRE and Nerja. However, as the airport is about 14 kms from the city centre, one will first have to get from the airport to Malaga city centre using the inter-urban bus service or a taxi. The inter-urban buses leave every half hour from a bus stop right outside the arrivals hall and costs approx 1 euro and will drop you off right in the Malaga city centre bus depot where you can get the coach to Nerja which costs approx. 4 euros. I think taxis charge approx. 15 euros for the same trip from the airport to Malaga city centre. There is a train service leaving Malaga airport every half hour on the hour, with a journey time of 12 minutes and costs 1,35. The train station is right next to the coach station in Malaga. Once you get to Nerja, you will need to get another coach or taxi to Frigiliana. The coach costs approx. 1 euro and a taxi costs approx 15 euros. The coach Nerja/Frigiliana coach after 19.00. There is no train service to Nerja.

We arrived at this corjito on 3rd Octber for a weeks relaxation and were not disappointed. From our first day ,where we had our host ran ragged with our requests, to the last, we found everything to be simply super. As an amputee, I had my doubts as to the suitability of location, being situated out of town on the slopes of the valley. As difficult it is for persons with limited mobility ,I found (nearly)everything doable with the short walk into the village and back --well maybe I cheated a few times ,taking a taxi(alcohol related of course) !!!!! The corjito itself is immaculate throughout and beautifully tastefully decorated. What is there not to like!!! Excellently and lovingly renovated by your courteous host ,Javier. Even Amanda says so !!!! No hesitation, we will be back as soon as, so Javier get that car fixed ,LOL. |

Guestbook for The Old Distillery
We found the cortijo to exceed our expectations by far; it was most tastefully decorated, fully and thoughtfully equipped, comfortable and very well located to combine the best of a country setting with an easy walk into the village. We were lucky that the weather was good enough for us to take full advantage of the pool, and the spacious terraces provided a comfortable choice of different places to lounge in the sunshine or eat al fresco - which we did, courtesy of the excellent barbecue located in the garden. The owner proved to be extremely helpful and courteous; living in Nerja, he made himself freely available, and was a pleasure to deal with. All in all, a great holiday experience, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the cortijo wholeheartedly to anyone who loves Frigiliana and the Nerja coast, or indeed to anyone who has never even been to the Costa del Sol. Well done, Javier! And your Mum is a great dancer!
