The Costa del Sol/Malaga region
The Axarquia district is the easternmost region of the province of Malaga. It extends over 1,019 square kilometres. It’s western border are the Malaga mountains. It’s southern border is the Mediterranean Sea. To the north are the Sierra Almijara, Caramolos, Jobo, Alhama and Tejeda Mountains. To the east id the province of Grenada. The district is shaped like a wide arch. Frigiliana is located 300 meters above sea level towards the eastern end of the Axarquia.
The official borders of Frigiliana encompass 39.74 square kilometers within which live 2,200 people year round. Because Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many vacation homes here, the population triples during the summer months.
Nearby towns include Competa, famous for its wine and raisins, and Torrox, known for the Phoenician tomb found there. Directly south of Frigiliana, and only 6 kilometers away Nerja, which is famous for its beaches, the Nerja caves, and the pedestrian walkway called the Balcon de Europa.
Only 50 kilometers away, and an easy trip on the newly constructed super highway lays the capital city of Malaga. Malaga boasts a population of 1.3 million inhabitants, making it the third largest city in Spain, as well as the fastest growing metropolitan area. Along with an International airport, Malaga offers a wide range of services one would expect from a large city.
To the east is the province of Grenada. One can easily drive to the capital city Grenada to see the wonderful cathedral and the world famous Alhambra and Generallife. Grenada is the city of dreams where a visitor can sample examples of Spanish culture throughout the centuries. If you decide to visit in the winter and you enjoy skiing, the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains offer a world class facility. The World championships were held there in 1997.
Frigiliana / Old town/Moorish quarter area
The Mudéjar quarter of the Village of Frigiliana contains popular Arabic architectural structures of the purest origin which exist in the Province of Málaga. It's the town most rewarded for it`s beauty in Axarquía. In 1961 and 1967, it received respectively the First and the Second Award of Embellishment of the Towns of the County; in 1982 it gained the best reward of all with the First National Prize of Improvement and Embellishment of Towns in Spain. Six years later it obtained the First Prize of Improvement and Embellishment of Andalusian Towns. At the moment, in the Old quarter of Frigiliana, we are in the process of forming an Historical Artistic Group which hopes to prove that the architectural structures framed in the steep, narrow and uneven streets and alleys are still in essentially the same framework that was present several centuries ago. Their "adarves" (small passages interconnecting streets) seem to transport us back to the past, with the ornamental touch of gavels, flowers and perfumes in spring, that stand out espectacularly on the background of the white buildings. In Frigiliana, The town celebrates many festivals, both religious and non religious. The citizens take the festivities seriously and invite anyone wishing to share in the fun to come along, including the people from the neighbouring villages as well as foreigners and holiday makers. Our festivals show how united the town is in expressing and sharing our traditions, many of which are hundreds of years old. Following are details of the most important days. You are all invited to enjoy these festivals along with the Aguanosos. Without a doubt you will be greeted with open arms. 20th of January:Saint Sebastian, February:Carniva, 28th of February:Day of Andalusia, April:Easter, 30th of April:" Los Mayos ", 3th of May:The cross day,13th of June:Saint Anthony"Feria",24th of June:Saint John,15th August: Folk festival, 7th and 8th of September:Las Candelarias, 1rst of November:Day of the deceaseds and December:Christmast. Frigiliana.com has compiled a list for you of the wide range of activities from football games to cultural events:Horse back riding,Golf,Country walks,Excursions, tours,...etc.
How to get there
From the airport in Malaga you can take a bus to central station in Malaga, them to Nerja and finaly to Frigiliana. Is really easy to do that, but if you want , you can take a taxi from the airport to Frigiliana, but I think is too expensive- around 60 euros-.The best , I think, is rent a car from the airport.
