The Costa del Sol region

In the eastern part of the province Granada found bordering the region of Axarquia. A land where tradition blends with tourism inimitable way. And is that land axárquicas combine a warm coastal and interior mountains where lost to the snowy peaks of Sierra Nevada. Within this huge mountain range of the Sierra Alhama find, Tejada and Almijara recently declared Natural Park and finding in them the Maroma Peak, the highest point of our province.

At sea orrilla, Axarquia covers a vast territory of the province stretching from the Rincon de la Victoria to Nerja. In his important coastal tourist resorts are positioned as the Rincon or Torre del Mar, coastal area of Vélez-Málaga, capital of the region. Continuing to the east lie Algarrobo, Torrox and Nerja finally. Beyond Nerja is the turning point of the Axarquia mountain where the sea mixes with apruptos forming limestone cliffs up to 200 meters high. This section ends with Maro has a wild and spectacular landscape that has been declared a Natural. Inland the limestone mountain hides the beautiful Sierra Almijara Cueva de Nerja.

But rural wealth of the region is not only on the coast but also in the interior where the largest number of municipalities in Málaga. Endless Mediterranean and Moorish villages of whitewashed houses, red roofs, walls covered with pots and narrow winding streets, towns full of people open, generous and hospitable.

The people make known scenic sites, save, in a place of light and color, the beauty of its streets and squares, monuments and festivals as they once were. All this coupled with environmental and climatic characteristics very gentle invitation to prolong his stay longer than planned. The Axarquia includes, therefore, a landscape of humanistic and cultural wealth. Where the customs bind to this to convert the land into a unique tourist spot in the province.

The history of the region is undoubtedly links over the Arabs in these lands that confierieron, not only his name but also their customs and culture that have remained unchanged over time.

As one of the last cradles of Arab resistance during the Reconquista, the Axarquia witnessed countless battles in defense of these precious lands. Places like Comares became a true defensive fortress from which to contemplate the whole vast territory of the Costa del Sol for all costs axárquicas erected watchtowers in strong defense of the Turkish pirates.

But besides its Arab past, the land was also Axarquía bandits who found in their small villages hidden in the hills of the mountains an ideal hiding place to take shelter. Sale of Alfarnate joy of great importance, was a must for travelers heading from the coast inland and. often were locked in their cells the most famous bandits. But there are many more stories that link axarquía with them and their myths and legends are.

In our journey through Axarquía we follow five tourist routes: Route of wine, Route of Sun and Subtropical (avocado), Mudejar Route, Route of the Raisin and Route of Oil and Mountains. The Axarquia offers places to discover.

"Great little hideaway in the hills above Frigiliana."

Lovely little villa in a secluded location 10 minutes or so drive from the village. It's a bit of a winding track up but that gives some exceptional views of the area. It has a spacious, open plan kitchen and living room but the upstairs bedroom is best for young adults or children. The master bedroom is sizeable and the bathroom is a good size too. The outside area is great. The shaded area is large and with the pool slightly raised by a few steps it was easy to monitor toddlers getting anywhere near it. If you like peace and quiet you'll love it. I would highly recommend it. It really was lovely.
