Enquire nowThe Isle of Wight region
The Isle of Wight lies off the South Coast of England and is reached by ferry from Lymington, Southampton and Portsmouth. The Island is renowned for its jurassic coastline, Its laid-back atmosphere "like going back to the 50s", and its links with Queen Victoria, who spent her summers at Osborne House on the Island and is very popular with those seeking a relaxed old-fashioned holiday.
Only 23 miles by 13 miles and a short sea crossing from the Mainland the Island has a unique atmosphere and is full of old world charm.
Visit unspoilt villages, fine seaside resorts, walk beautiful coastal scenery, eat locally caught seafood.
Explore the island's varied places of historial interest - the dinosaur excavation sites dating back 120 million years, the Roman Villas at Newport and Brading, Carisbrooke Castle where Charles 1 was imprisoned and of course, the magnificent Osborne House the favourite country home and retreat of Queen Victoria. Steam enthusiasts will love to travel on the steam railway at Havenstreet. Many well-known literary and artistic figures have lived on or visited the island including Julia Margaret Cameron, Joseph Turner, Tennyson, Keats, J.B. Priestly and Dickens who wrote part of David Copperfield in Bonchurch. And don't forget to visit the famous Needles and the famous yachting mecca of West Cowes.
The Freshwater / Freshwater Bay area
Freshwater Bay is located on the 'dinosaur' coast and adjacent to Tennysons Down, yet only a 15 min drive to
Newport the island's capital. The apartment offers some of the most dramatic views on the island and is only a par 4 from Freshwater Golf Club (where you can 'pay and play') . Freshwater Bay is the iconic photograph used on most Island calendars and the wonderful coast road down towards the Bay has featured in countless films and TV broadcasts.
The seafront location is perfect for all sea sports including swimming in the Bay, scuba, snokelling, windsurfing and fishing. Sightseeing and fishing boat trips are also available at nearby Yarmouth Harbour. Two Hotels with bars open to the public are within 2 mins walk of the apartment and there is also a tea room for light lunches and snacks just across the road. A post office and shop are within a short walk and a larger supermarket is within a mile in the town of Freshwater. Farringford Manor (former home of the renowned poet Sir Alfred Lord Tennyson) is within walking distance and the afternoon tea there is lovely. The cafe at Dimbola Lodge in the Bay offers a good selection of vegetarian lunches.
The Lifeboat station is adjacent to the apartment block (with the boat launching for practice every Wednesday evening and Sunday morning). The shop attached to the Lifeboat station sells ice creams, sweets, books, toys, postcards etc.
Board the open top bus in the Bay for a tour around the Island - you can get on and off where you want and arrive back in the Bay later in the day - a good way to see the major attractions without having to get the car out.
Walkers have the magnificent Tennysons Way on the doorstep and even the most reluctant walker can wander along the clifftop path to see the famous Tennyson's Monument. If you love golf - bring your clubs - just across the road from the apartment is the magnificent Freshwater Bay Golf Club - terrific views.
The town of Freshwater with its shops, Leisure Centre and Swimming Pool is about a mile away. Yarmouth is only 7 minute drive away and of course all of the Island is accessible by bus or car.
Dimbola Lodge, the former home of the pioneer Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, is located in Freshwater Bay. This is where you can see the statue erected in honour of Jimi Hendrix and dine in their wonderful cafe - a must for vegetarians Other places of interest within walking distance are the Afton Marshes Nature Trail, the National Trust walks along the cliffs, and the long unspoilt beaches which are popular with fossil hunters and surfers.
There are many and varied Festivals which take place on the IOW, a few of which in 2013 are:
May Yarmouth Mayfest, May Walk the Wight Walking Festival, June Yarmouth Old Gaffers Festival (a must-see), June IOW Pop Festival, June Round The Island Yacht Race (watch from our window/terrace), August Cowes Week (world famous), August The Garlic Festival, September Bestival, September IOW Cycling Festival, October Autumn Walking Festival
There are lots of places of interest around the Island. 'Must-sees' include Osborne House, Dimbola Lodge, Ventnor Botanical Gardens, Yarmouth Harbour, the Dinosaur Museum, Carisbrooke Castle, IOW Pearl, IOW Glass, Godshill miniature villiage, the IOW Zoo (famous for Wight Tigers as shown on TV programme) and the famous "Winkle Street".

This is a fantastic apartment in a really wonderful location. I think it was the best appointed apartment we've ever stayed in - and we've stayed in a few. Everything was well done (stylishly too), and everything worked. But the appointment of the apartment isn't half of it. Look through the living room's patio doors and there, with only a very few yards of short grass in between, is the sea: the apartment is almost on the beach. The sea is just a constant restful presence during a stay, if the sea's not too rough - and just fun if it is. From the apartment there are easy but invigorating walks each way. Across the beach to the west the Needles are three and a half miles away over Tennyson Down. To the east is another nice walk up a gentle hill over Afton golf course. There are great pubs just near, and a short drive will take you to anywhere on the western side of the island. |

Whatever your age, when you race through the rooms to see the view from the lounge - sky, sea, chalk cliffs - this really is a "Wow! factor place to stay! The accommodation itself is immaculate, very clean and well-appointed, with a fully-equipped kitchen if you want to self-cater, but excellent cafes, restaurants and pubs nearby to dine out (the Red Lion in Freshwater itself is a must and it's worth booking in advance). The walk to Tennyson Mount (and beyond, to the Needles and Alum Bay - as we did) is worth the effort. In October we had 22 degrees to sit out on the porch in shorts and t-shirts and fished in the bay (no luck, so will just have to go again). Would we recommend it? Well. it's our second visit and we'll go back again, so no question. Thanks again Lesley! |
