The Isle of Wight region
Over half the Isle of Wight is designated as an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is renowned for its beautiful countryside and diverse scenery ranging from the dramatic white cliffs at Freshwater, to lovely sandy, award winning beaches and small harbours. It has charming little villages and a temperate climate. The Island has some exceptional wildlife, being one of the few places that the red squirrel still survives and has the richest locations of dinosaur fossils in Europe.
The Island is steeped in history, with Osbourne House and gardens being the home to Queen Victoria (well worth a visit ) - it is also the venue for various outdoor concerts throughout the year.
Carisbrooke Castle is where Charles I was imprisoned, and the remains of a roman villa can be seen at Brading.
It is home to the Isle of Wight Music Festival, Bestival and International Jazz Festival and is also famous for Cowes Week with all the sailing events in the Solent.
The Island offers over 500 miles of well maintained and well signposted footpaths with stunning scenery and long stretches of beautiful beaches. There is so much to see and do on this small Island - something for all ages.
Freshwater is located in West Wight and the village offers a good range of shops, pub with good food and leisure centre with indoor pool.
Colwell Bay is an award winning safe sandy beach with a couple of cafes, one of them selling buckets and spades etc. and hiring out deckchairs. Along the coast is Totland Bay with beachside restaurant that specialises in seafood.
Freshwater Bay with its chalk cliffs of Tennyson Down is a good start for many walks with spectacular scenery. There is also an 18 hole golf course set on the downland, overlooking the English Channel in one direction and the Solent in the other.
The yacht harbour and ferry port of Yarmouth is only a few minutes drive away, and has a16th century castle as well as excellent shops, pubs and restaurants. From here you can book a fishing trip or a boat trip to the Needles - one of Britains most famous natural landscapes.
At The Needles Pleasure Park there are childrens rides and you can watch glass blowing, sweet making or take the chair lift down to the beach and see the coloured sands of Alum Bay. There is also an open top bus up to The Needles Batteries, a coastal defence constructed between 1861-95 against a threat of invasion from France. It is now owned by the National Trust and at the end of a 65m tunnel gives the closest view of The Needles from the land.
Fort Victoria Country Park (approx 1 mile walk away through peaceful woodland) is home to an aquarium, planetarium, model railway and underwater archaeology centre. The cafe here has wonderful views across the Solent to Hurst Castle.
For birdwatching, visit Newtown Creek and for those interested in horse riding there is a riding stable a couple of minutes drive away.
