The Somerset region

Somerset, The Cotswolds, The West Country

Freshford is in the Cotswolds Area of Natural Outstanding Beauty, in the Green Belt. The Cotswolds is full of beautiful English

villages, hills, rivers and woodland. If you enjoy walking, fishing, or bird spotting, this is the place for you. There are many marked footpaths through fields and woodland, making it easy to choose long or short walks.

There are many places of historical interest in the region, including Stonehenge, Avebury and the City of Wells. There are daily guided tours from Bath to these places, throughout the year. For alternative events that focus on health and healing, Glastonbury is an eco friendly town, famous for its Sacred Springs and the Tor.

Longleat is a short drive away and provides a day spa, a Safari Park and Longleat House and Gardens. It has extensive grounds and forestry, for long and short walks. Spend a day at Stourhead Lake, Durham House, The Arboretum or Corsham Court, which are all within the region. A bit further away but still within the region is Weymouth, which offers cliff walks and a beach for you to enjoy.

Freshford, Bath Spa and Surrounding Villages

Freshford offers beautiful walks through the ancient Friary Wood and along the river Frome. There is a cycle path from the next village, along the canal to Bath. The local Inn at Freshford has live music evenings, an open fire and excellent food. Spend an afternoon in the ornate Italian Gardens of Iford and treat yourself to cream tea. Iford provides a feast of music events every summer. Take a picnic and listen to opera, jazz or world music. Tickets need to be booked well in advance.

Bradford on Avon is a beautiful town within walking distance, and is steeped in historical interest. It is great for breakfast! Both Bradford on Avon and Frome (20 drive away), provide artisan, antique and vintage shopping. They have a variety of restaurants and cafes to suit all tastes.

The Roman Spa was built to utilize the hot springs, that were dedicated to the Goddess Sulis Minerva, the Goddess of Healing and Wisdom. The Thermae is a modern extension of the original spa, and provides all you need for a

luxurious and uplifting experience, at a reasonable price. The city of bath is a visual treat, with the Royal Crescent and The Circus highlighting its architectural beauty, and its golden hue creating a particularly lovely atmosphere. Visit Bath during the International Music Festival in May every year, or during the Literary or Film Festivals. There are guided walks throughout the city most evenings, and per-london shows at the Theatre Royal.

"Lovely little cottage in an idilic setting."

My partner and I really enjoyed our stay at Starlington Cottage. It suited our needs very well, it was well priced, finished to an excellent standard, warm and cosy. The owners Emer and Jem were extremely helpful and made sure we had every thing we needed then let us get on with it. We have recommended it to our friends and would stay definitely stay again if we found ourselves called to Bath again.

We have just returned from a wonderful 3 day break staying at Starlington cottage. The cottage its self is beautiful, as are the views. Emer & Jem were most welcoming, warm, friendly & very helpful. The cottage is in the most amazing location, giving you a real feel of the countryside, whilst being only 5 miles from Bath. Lovely walks around Freshford, which is a beautiful village & has a really nice local pub too. We are already looking at returning in the spring & would not hesitate in recommending Starlington cottage to our friends. Thanks very much to Emer & Jem

"just perfect"

I have stayed at Starlington Cottage on a number of occasions and can't wait to return! It is set in the most gorgeous location at the top of the valley, in the picturesque village of Freshford, giving you the feeling of glorious rural idyll, whilst being within easy reach of the cities of Bath and Bristol. When you decide to stay local, there are great river and woodland walks, cycle trails, including the canal paths, excellent country pubs and the historic town of Bradford on Avon just up the road...great for breakfast! The cottage itself is beautiful, full of character and with all mod cons, including underfloor heating, a well appointed kitchen, a lovely lounge with stunning views down the valley...same goes for the bedroom, very romantic! The garden is perfect for sunbathing, eating 'al fresco' etc. Jem and Emer keep the house to the high standards you would expect, are very friendly, and helpful re local information etc, and.....the bed was super comfy, Huzzah! All in all......fantastic!
