Freshford

Close to the World Heritage, Roman City of Bath, Freshford is set in an area designated 'an area of outstanding natural beauty' and is a 'Conservation village' all this means that it's retained it's historic architecture and landscape.

Very much a living village with always lots going on, a thriving village school, Shop and cafe, Post Office, Doctors Surgery and of course a wonderful country pub down by the river. With a rich history going back to Saxon times, several textile mills survive, now residential, weavers cottages, Manor house and even an old brewery.

Freshford railway station provides frequent services to Bath and mainline services to London and in the other direction to the south coast. The Kennet and Avon canal runs close by and it's a lovely bike ride to Bath just 5 miles level ride and there's a great pub and floating cafe on a barge along the way. in the other direction is Avoncliffe with its amazing aqueduct that carries the canal high over the River Avon below. Here there's a great cafe as well the old the Cross Guns pub with it's terraces running all the way down to the river bank. A little further on down tow path is the gem of Bradford on Avon with it's enormous 14th century Tithe Barn and plethora of great little shops, cafes and restaurants. If you fancy getting on the water, it's possible to rent a day boats, canoes or bicycles from the near by Dundas Canal Visitor Centre.

There's great walks in all directions, one takes you through Friary wood alongside the river to Iford, were a stone bridge with a statue of Britannia allows you cross the River Frome to Iford Manor. Famous for it's beautiful italian inspired Peto Gardens, designated Grade 1 in the National register of Historic Parks and Gardens. They serve teas here and there's a program of concerts through the summer months were you picnic in the garden before the evenings performance, need to book up in advance for this.

A 5min walk up the lane from Abbotsleigh Cottage is Homewood Park hotel. Set in extensive grounds with an award winning restaurant, it also offers a hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steam room and heated outside swimming pool with fabulous views.

"Perfect Hidden Gem"

After an eventful drive down (winter storms) we arrived to meet Philip who quickly showed us around before leaving us to explore. Having read previous reviews prior to booking I had a clue what we may find, and my partner was ecstatic to find some fresh homemade brownies in the kitchen!

The pictures and blurb could not be anymore accurate. The apartment and overall house is stunning, the attention to detail faultless. Set in the quiet and scenic Freshford, we struck gold with a village that is a friendly as it looks.

The bedroom is massive, the lounge endless and the wood burning fire a joy (though no need to worry as the central heating is brilliant).

What more can I say. Perfect owners, perfect location, perfect apartment.

The negatives - I had to go home.

Thank you Philip and family!

"Lovely accommodation in a perfect location"

We stayed for two nights in the new year and were very impressed. A lovely apartment with little homely touches. Perfect for a trip into bath, the village had a lovely local pub and had it not been raining it looked like a lovely area for walking. Would definitely consider returning in warmer weather to see more of the area minus the rain and would definitely recommend!

"Amazing stay, perfect idyllic location!!!"

Really enjoyed our stay in Abbotsleigh Cottage, the location is perfect, only 10 mins walk to the train station which brings you straight to Bath in a few minutes. The hosts were very welcoming, even had freshly made brownies waiting for us when we arrived. Can't recommend this place enough.

"Gorgeous, cottage in idyllic location"

I stayed here with friends for a weekend. The cottage is lovely, beautifully decorated and really thoughtfully equipped. There is also a cosy wood fire, making it the perfect spot for a winter break. Freshford itself is a really cute, idyllic little village and the cottage has amazing views over the surrounding countryside. Phil and Naomi were exceptionally helpful with everything and really very kind hosts. We will certainly be back and would strongly recommend to anyone
