The Midi-Pyrenees region
The Départment of "Lot" (46) is a place rich in many things. Valleys. rivers, caves, forests, bastides, chateaux's and vineyards among many things. Whether it's cycling, walking, canoeing, birdwatching or wine tasting or simply relaxing amidst the peace and quiet of the forests then the Lot has something for everyone. It even has river and lake side beaches in the summer!. A fabulous climate helps add to the pleasures of any vacation in Southwest France. Warm, sunny day after day from June to September; cold crisp winters great for rambling through the forests or a leisurely 9 holes at the local golf course.
The Lot sits within Quercy, an ancient land of hills and valleys, rivers and overhanging precipices. This area of outstanding natural beauty is characterised by its oak and chestnut forests, its vineyards and farms experiences hot dry summers and cold dry winters, with warm weather late into the Autumn months. It fits between Bordeaux and Toulouse in the South-West of France.
Famous for its gastronomy, this area gives us ducks, geese, foie gras, the black truffle, confits, walnuts, cheeses (cabécou local & from Rocamadour), the magical black wines of Cahors and now saffron. An abundance of this fresh produce is available at the wonderful markets in our nearby villages, and of course, is featured in the many local cafés and restaurants. Every season has its own delights – from the sweet Quercy melons and luscious strawberries in summer, to the wonderfully earthy mushrooms and truffles in Autumn.
Frayssinet Le Gelat
Frayssinet Le Gelat sits very conveniently on the crossroads of the D673 and the D660 being two main cross country routes. The D660 leads up to Bergerac and the airport there and also down to Cahors where you can get the train straight to Paris or Barcelona.. The D673 heading east takes you to one of the main north-south motorways (toll) less than 1 hours drive.
The village has 2 bars, a pizza restaurant, a lake side bar and restaurant serving steak or moules et frites in the summer, a superb boulangerie, a mini supermarket which doubles as a local post office and a library.
We are located on the edge of the village of Frayssinet-le-Gélat, the Lot, which is situated on a crossroads leading to some of the most picturesque and historical villages in France. Each direction leads you on to explore and enjoy so much in these charming areas of the Lot, the Dordogne & Tarn-et-Garonne.
An easy stroll of 5 minutes brings you to our 14th century village, where at the best Boulangerie you will find your baguettes, croissants and pains aux chocolats. Then there is also the mini-market, with its friendly English speaking French owner, who has a range of local produce, including cabécou cheeses for you to enjoy, as well as a selection of groceries and wines and free wi-fi.
On the other side of the village is the local Plan d'Eau, a very pretty lake much enjoyed in summer by locals and visitors alike, with its lively bar and café, safe swimming and pedalos. The new café in the village is run by a well-known chef, who serves excellent evening meals. Also the Bibliothèque library is where you may borrow books or use their computer facilities.
