The La Palma region

La Palma is not just a pretty island, it is a spectacular island!

If you have never been to La Palma, one of the smaller islands off the coast of Morocco, you will have a wonderful surprise.

Few places on our planet can offer such an astonishing landscape full of contrasts and breath-taking secnery in such a small area.

Only 30 km by 50 km, La Palma offers forests of laurisilva, pinewoods, mountain peaks, volcanic craters, beaches and azure blue seas. And of course there is the mighty Caldera - the largest erosion crater in the world.

And all of it unspoiled by mass tourism, traffic congestion and holiday touts.

The island is for the adventurous - if not in body, then in soul - for those seeking something special.

Franceses area

Acknowledged as being the most beautiful part of the island, the north is a rural idyll, untouched by tourism.

Here, you will find Canarian people going about their normal daily business of working the land or tending their goats.

The area of Franceses, which includes the old port village of La Fajana, is the home of winding donkey paths and traditional houses scattered along ridges of land.

Caves can also be seen which were lived in until the 1940's along with wooden-roofed and stone-walled dwellings.

La Fajana, less than 15 minutes by car or one hour on foot, sits right by the Atlantic ocean. This is where ships would take on cargo such as pine wood or bananas and sail for America, the next stop to the west. Nowadays, it is largely deserted, though still fascinating. The sea and rocky beach is accessed by a short walk through the banana plantation and, even if not for swimming, then beach-combing is a must.

Guests can set out to explore this and more right from the door of La Casita.

Nearby:

Just 25 minutes by car to the east, is Barlovento. There is also a 2-hourly bus service leaving from just by La Casita. This is a small town with a supermarket, banks, pharmacy, bars and restaurants, etc. For the fit and enthusiastic - walk there (5 hours), have a meal and get the bus back!

Just a few minutes from Barlovento by car, you will find La Laguna. This is a woodland recreation area for camping and bbq's, along with a restaurant. The wood and bbq 'kitchens' complete with washing up facilities are provided free - you only need to bring the ingredients and yoursleves!

Another 10 minutes along the road, down by the sea, are three sea pools. These are a great facility for the timid swimmer and keen snorkeller alike as a myriad of colourful fish also swim in the larger pool. During summer, you can also take a leap into the sea which has fascinating underwater topography. Facilties here include changing facilities with toilets and showers. There are also two waterside restaurants.

To the west of La Casita and just 20 minutes away by car or bus, is La Zarza, an archaeological site. It is the first of its type in the Canaries and original cave etchings can be seen. The small museum provides a fascinating insight into how the original inhabitants lived

Horse riding is near-by and a two-hour trail along the quiet and beautiful donkey paths is a wonderful way to enjoy the scenery. Mountain bikes are provided free of charge with rental of the cottage. The small town of Santo Domingo 40 minutes by car or bus from La Casita is a step back in time with its ancient cobbled streets and windmill. It also has the best (in our opinion) restaurant on the island with fabulous presentation, variety and quality of food, all at a reasonable price.

During summer, there are fiestas every weekend. A chance to see how the locals enjoy themselves - mainly with live music and dancing in the sunshine. It is a family time with grandparents and small children included which makes it such a friendly atmosphere. Fiestas are free for everyone to enjoy and it is a wonderful opportunity to experience the generosity of the Palmerans.
