Giardini di Marzo is a donkey farm and bed & breakfast guesthouse and is plunged in an area cultivated with olive, fig and almond trees between the Valle d'Itria (valley of trulli) and Salento, in the immediate vicinity of the Adriatic and Ionian Seas (about 35 minutes by car). The strategic position of our estate, situated right in the countryside, offers an excellent starting point for excursions to historic and cultural sites of Apulia, like Lecce, Alberobello, Ostuni ecc., as well as for walking, cycling or donkey trekking. On request, we organize individual excursions to interesting tourism locations of the region, food and wine excursions and trekking, possibly accompanied by Ute. She will share her experience as a tourist guide for the Apulia region.

In each period of the year we offer cooking lessons guided by the expert hands of Mario's cousins and aunts. You will learn how to prepare the typical orecchiette or the focaccia pugliese (a variety of stuffed pizza); we will collect fruit and vegetables together in our garden and make jams (figs and oranges with fresh mint), liqueurs with lemon or with prickly pears!!! (fichi d'India), and many other gourmet specialities.

The apartments for guests of the Giardini di Marzo are in the country house. The main entrance opens to a room with the accesses to the two apartments Rondinella and Asinelli. The large common room is available to all guests for breakfast or for reading. You will find books on Apulia and there is an Internet point. A spacious kitchen equipped with a wood-burning cook stove, an oven and a barbecue offers a welcoming that embodies the taste of the epoch. It can be used only on request. Outside there is a parking area, a covered terrace and of course the garden itself, breathing relaxation with stone benches and deck chairs under the olive trees, in the midst of flowerbeds.

Our apartments are equipped without air conditioning designed following an organic and intelligent method so as to guarantee (both in summer and winter) a temperate, healthy, optimum ventilation. The rooms have been renovated in traditional style, with barrel vaults or cross vaults, little niches, masonry benches and floors tiled with regional stone. Each apartment has skirting board heating, wooden window frames with integrated mosquito net and an electrical system (especially in the bedrooms) installed in such a manner as not to affect human health. All the bathrooms are comfortable and ergonomically designed, with spacious shower cabins, shelves, coat racks, etc. The pieces of furniture differ one to another and are original, emphasis is on natural materials such as wood, stone or natural fibres.

The Puglia region

The “heel of Italy's boot," Apulia is a charming region that can be visited all year round and is suspended among nature, history, tradition, tastes and spirituality. Apulia is an enchanting region that spreads lengthwise along the sea - marvelous beaches that will delight every traveler, from the sandy Torre dell'Orso and Porto Cesario, to the rocky, boulder-encrusted Riviera of Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca. At Santa Maria di Leuca the calm and crystalline waters of the Ionian Sea mix with those of the intense and azure Adriatic. Sea lovers have multiple options in Apulia, from Gallipoli, the “Gem of Salento,” to Gargano, “Italy's Buttress,” which protrudes out into the clear sea, where one finds the the beautiful Tremiti Islands.

Nature is the protagonist again in the Murgia National Park, and in Gargano's wild Umbra forest, its salt pans and lakes. Visit the marine reserve of Torre Guaceto and the deep ravines of Laterza and wide dolines (depressions in the terrain) of Altamura characterize the hinterland of the region with their charming landscapes. For those who want to travel through history, Apulia offers a wide range of places that testify to the ancient origins of this land: from prehistory to Magna Graecia, from the Imperial Age to the Renaissance and the Baroque splendor of Lecce and of Salento. The trulli, for example those of Valle d'Itria, offer an evocative testimony to the rural past of the region. Meanwhile, numerous castles dot the coasts of the southern coast, hinting at an era when both perils and commerce landed on these shores.

For who is interested in tradition and folk music, should attend the numerous festivals and fish sagre that in summertime run throughout the region.

Francavilla Fontana

In Brindisi province, stones and buildings tell the story of this land. Appia and Traiana roads once connecting the city to Rome left their traces on modern roads. In this city, where Virgil died, there are the remains of two II –century columns that marked the end of Appia road.

The Norman – Swabian and Angevin marks also prevails in the inland area of province and former Messapi land, while it is even more evident in Mesagne, Oria, Francavilla Fontana and Ceglie Messàpica castles. In this area, natural landscape is characterized by ravines and caves shaped through centuries by the patient work of rivers. Rock witnesses of basilian monk civilizations can be found near Ostuni. Watch towers north of Brindisi tell the story of pirate and Saracen invasions, while the remains of ancient Egnazia Roman city can be seen in the respective archeological site.

Sun, sea, wind. Nature strikes in the first place, when one gets to this land stretch in balance between two seas. Salento has its core in the province of Lecce, - a Baroque Florence in Southern Italy – and reaches the provinces of Brindisi over the Adriatic Sea, and Taranto on the Ionian Sea side. The cities and inland towns expressions of the unique Lecce Baroque with Messapi and Salento Grecìa can still be seen. Its language, songs and feasts still show the culture of Graecia Magna. Surf, kite-surf and windsurf lovers never miss the beaches facing the Alimini lakes, while scuba diving fans just have to choose among the several equipped centers and charming sea beds of the Ionian coast as well as of the area between Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca.
