About this location
The Central Portugal region
The Silver Coast has an almost perfect climate. Winters are mild with daytime temperatures averaging 17 degrees. In the summer, cooling Atlantic breezes make for a comfortable 27 degree daytime average. The Silver coast enjoys almost 275 days a year of sunshine.
The beaches and seaside towns make this region the most popular holiday destination for the Portuguese themselves. Amongst the most spectacular beaches are those at Foz Do Arelho, Salir Do Porto, Sao Martinho do Porto. The beach at Foz is unique because it caters for small children and families with acres of soft white sand leading into shallow, calm waters of the Obidos lagoon. And yet, the western coastline leads directly into the Atlantic and is a favoured surfing spot for locals.
The local cuisine is dominated by the fresh fish and crustaceans of the area including swordfish, sole, sardines, squid, octopus and sea snails. The Portuguese also adore meat and cook it to the most varied and flavourful recipes including grilled steak in Port wine or the sucking lamb stewed or marinated in spices then baked and of course pork.
There are many wonderful places to visit nearby such as Foz Do Arelho (chic cafes, fantastic beaches, surf culture), Nazare (beach, vibrant night light, waterslide park and bull ring), Peniche (fishing port with wonderful seafood restaurants), Obidos (medieval walled town with many fascinating festivals), Alcobaca (World Heritage Monastery) and many golf courses including links at Praia De'l Rey.
Foz do Arelho
Foz do Arelho is a typical Portuguese seaside village, still unspoilt by tourism. It goes about it's daily business at a slow pace, making it the ideal place to unwind and relax.
Foz do Arelho Village centre has a number of superb food restaurants, bars, mini market, bank, pharmacy, Sailing club and aquatic sports.
Theres a vast surfers beach paradise, but with a large area not facing the Atlantic thus suitable for children.
Foz also boasts the region's finest night club and plenty of bars, for your entertainment into the wee hours.
Within 10 mins drive is the important spa city of Caldas da Rainha, with daily fresh products markets, restaurants,
bars, vast varied Shopping, museums and all modern facilites and amenties.
Places worth a visit while you’re here –
To the South – Lisbon, Cascais (good upmarket shopping), Sintra (the palace is fabulous), to the North, Alcobaca (amazing church), Batalha (fantastic gothic Church), Sao Martinho do Porto (nice beach and promenade), Nazara (another beach and promenade resort but not touristy), Marinho Grande (glass centre). All of these can be easily accessed by getting on to the A8 initially.
