Cottage | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
The Quinta is located in Vale da Quinta, a hill top village, 8 kilometers from Caldas da Rainha, on the Silver Coast of Portugal.
The Quinta was built initially in the early 1940's initially as a wine press for local vineyards, before being converted into residential accommodation. It is a detached property in the centre of the village surronded by lemon and olve trees (in bloom according to season) and has a few neighbouring properties. The key feature is the large courtyard which apart from being a sun trap is idea for dining al fresco (weather permitting). The main kitchen is independent of the main house located in the courtyard with gas cooker and full range of kitchen appliances. There is a separate outhouse (on the opposite side of the courtyard) which stores barbeque cooking equipment for dining 'alfresco'.
In the main building, there is one double and one single bedroom -the double with built in wardrobe. The lounge has an open fire place (equipped with logs) should you find the eveings turn cold (most unlikely unless you were visiting in the winter months) and 'french style' doors opening onto the courtyard to enjoy the sun with your morning breakfast. There is a mini breakfast bar equipped with grill and microwave and tea/coffee facilities to enjoy the breakfast without having to go into the main kitchen if you like a lazy morning before venturing out for the day. There is a attic which has been converted into a double bedroom size with independent wardrobe and storage space.
There is one shower room with wash basin and toilet in the main building and additional shower and wc facilities located in building in courtyard which also provides washing machine.
The Quinta has satelite TV and internet connection.
If you choose to bring your own car, there is parking space on the external area of the quinta and in the adjacent road.
In summary, The Quinta is ideally suited to the more discerning visitor, who enjoys the tranquility of the countryside - yet being only 15 minutes car ride from the nearest beach *San Martinho do Porto) and taking the opportunity to discover the 'real Portugal'.
There is no need to bring or hire a car (though the latter does enable you to discover more of the region) as there are bus services from the local Salir de Matos to Caldas da Rainha, which has a daily market with the finest fruit and vegetables in season and fish market (with the finest range of fish brought in daliy (except Sunday) from Peniche.
If you do not want to spend all your time cooking (after all this is your break) there are some nice restaurants in walking distance of the Quinta (the most notable one is the 'Solmar dos Amigos' in Guisado the neighbouring village where you can dine finely and relatively inexpensively. A taxi from The Quinta to Caldas da Rainha is approximately 8 euros - and from Caldas you can decide to take another bus to one of the beach resorts along the coast or take the Rede Express Coach to Lisbon (1 hour) and to spend an enjoyable day exploring the capital of Portugal.
The feedback from the visitors to date is that they were content to go off to the beach for the day - and then returned to the Quinta to soak up the evening sun and get the barbeque out for the 'frango piri piri!

The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast/Central Portugal region
Vale de Quinta is a hill top village - one kilometer from Salir de Matos, which links by bus to Caldas da Rainha (8 kilometers) a provincial market town with daily market providing a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables, and a fish market (except Sunday), and range of shops, cafes, and restaurants. Caldas also has a famous spa hospital with it's healing waters for patients who have a range of joint pains and mobility problems (which many Portuguese travel to Caldas to make use of this renowned facility).
The weather can be unpredictable - this region is not the sheltered Algarve - , but exposed to the Atlantic rollers, and winds can be quite high (but much more calm in summer months). But there are far more sunny days than wet - and you will notice the strength of the sun when you venture out into the courtyard of the Quinta for an early morning stroll around the grounds.
And winding down - enjoying a bottle of vinho (best quality at half the price of Waitrose) barbequing some frango (chicken) with the sun setting on the Quinta is an absulute must before retiring for the night. (just go careful on the piri-piri)!
This is essentially 'the real Portugal' local farm and agriculture workers, and not being a tourist area very few people speak English, so it is important that you learn some basics (particularly the everyday common courtesies) that makes all the difference when in comtact with others. The beach areas of Foz de Arelho and San Martinho do Porto - both with a 15 minute drive from the Quinta, is home to many English people who are here long term or for the winter and there are a wide range of restaurants and shops to cater for all ages in these areas.
A car would be helpful to get around more and visit local places of interest - and will be quicker of course to get to the beach. Otherwise, there will be an information folder in the Quinta of local taxis - and other information to enable you to make the best of your stay.
Foz do Arelho
Your landmark must always be Caldas da Rainha - as this town does not show on the fields of the web page (so entered Fox do Arelho) which is few kilometers out).
This is always your key navigation point for arrival and getting around.
