The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast region

The Pope was invited to visit Portugal and to celebrate the May 13th ceremonies in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima. He will preside at the shrine's annual May 13 ceremonies. Fatima is one of the most important shrines of the world dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Located just 40 minutes from Foz do Arelho; this Sanctuary welcomes millions of pilgrims and tourists from all over the world. With this visit in May 2010, by Pope Benedict XVI, it will be the fifth time a Pope will be visiting the Sanctuary of Fatima. Making this site on the Silver Coast of Portugal the most visited place by a Pope! Making this years ceremonies, an excellent time to visit Fatima and make it a unique day trip destination.
Foz do Arelho area
The crown jewel of the area is the fortified medieval village of Obidos, which stands on a hilltop overlooking the village and lush fields nearby. Depending on the time that you choose to visit this stunning historical town you may encounter a different festival or cultural event which may include, chocolate festival, opera concert, Medieval Festival, Easter and Christmas celebrations. Enjoy visiting a 17th century church or walk the catle ramparts. Obidos hosts many cultural events and not to be missed is the chocolate festival in February. Easter is celebrated in style with eight days of events including a torchlight procession within the castle, or if you prefer medieval week which happens in July. This traditional town recreates the past at a medieval market with authentic costumes and displays.
Visit the city of Caldas da Rainha and discover its many historical charms. Picturesque open air market where the vendors are the local farmers who sell their produce to the public. Enjoy shopping in its fashionable boutiques and hypermarkets or visit the museums, historical churches or shop for some of the charming local pottery.
Rated one of the very best in Europe the stunning beach of Foz do Arelho is only a short 2 minute walk from the apartment. Popular with families as well as young couples. Whether you are looking for sunbathing, surfing, swimming, fishing or hunting for seashells with the children this is the perfect place to unwind. Travel a little further along the lagoon and you can even take up a new sport at the windsurfing school. Where you may choose to take up surfing, bodyboarding, kitesurf, catamaran, and canoe. Colourful kiosks line the promenade as well as many bars, cafes and restaurants. All restaurants are a great value for money and include the best fish restaurant in the area where you can dine while watching the sunset over the ocean.

Beautiful Apartment Everything was just as we had expected, a beautiful, clean and spacious apartment this fantastic seaviews, even from the back bedrooms. Lovely swimming pool with plenty of sunshine. Just a short drive to Calda das Reina where you can find plenty of supermarkets and a fresh fish and fruit and vegetable market. Lovely Apartment We really enjoyed our stay at this apartment. The complex was very tidy and the pools with excellent views were a great hit with the kids. The beach was only a short stroll away with some excellent surf and calmer waters in the lagoon. The apartment itself was very very good, it was spacious, well equipped and could comfortably sleep 7 if needed. Maria the owners rep/mother was very friendly and helpful. Foz is a wonderful location and this is a great apartment for a family. Facilities were ideal for us. The most difficult decision every day was - a few minutes down to the beach or 30 seconds down to the (3) pools? Great location for visits to Fatima, Caldas and Peniche. Dear Licinia, thank you very much for lending your apartment. Foz do Arelho was such a peaceful and relaxing place to stay - not too many tourists, no huzzle and puzzle and the wheather was just fine; not too warm because of the wind - we really enjoyed ourselves.
