Villa / 4 bedrooms / sleeps 8
This private detached villa offers comfortable accommodation on a single storey with direct access on to a paved terrace with a heated 8x4 swimming pool. The house comprises a large sitting/dining room, a kitchen, and two separate bedroom wings.
One wing has two double bedrooms, a shower room and a toilet. The other has a double and a twin-bedded room, a bathroom (with over-bath shower) and a toilet. There is a small utility room with washing machine and tumble drier.
Outside, there is a covered dining area overlooking the pool, and a large terrace where there is always both sun and shade. Opposite the house, across the pool, there is a summer kitchen with a further dining area, soft seating, and a BBQ. The garden is fully enclosed and gated, and contains several mature pine and ecalyptus trees, fruit trees (cherry, apricot, plum) and shrubs. There is a table tennis table under some of the mature pines.
The house is along a short lane at the end of a cul-de-sac, so it is in a tranquil spot with almost no traffic noise. A 3 minute walk takes you into the centre of the village, where there are several small shops, including a baker, a general store, a chemist and a paper shop.

The house is extremely well furnished and equipped. In the large sitting room there is a TV with a limited Sky package (main BBC and ITV channels, Channels 4 and 5, Sky News, BBC News, all main radio stations, etc). There is a DVD player with a good selection of DVDs for all ages. The CD player has an ipod dock, and there is a wide and varied collection of CDs. The well equipped kitchen has a gas hob and electric oven, dishwasher, microwave, kettle, toaster, coffee machine and all the equipment you would expect in a family kitchen. The bedrooms are in two separate corridors leading off either side of the main room. There are two double bedrooms in one, and a double and a twin-bedded room in the other. The double bedrooms all have fitted wardrobes with ample shelves, and the twin room has a wardrobe and a chest of drawers.
The house and garden are all on one level, with just a small step up into the house and no interior steps, making it very suitable for the very young and the not so young. It is also very suitable for two families, or parties comprising 3 generations, as the bedroom corridors are separate and self-contained.
|Further details outdoors|
The house is set in a large (2000m2), level, private garden, with a mixture of sun and shade, mature and young trees, shrubs and beds. The property is entered through a gate which gives access to a gravel drive, big enough for several cars.
The house sits behind a small lawn, with a raised flower bed. There are oleanders, forsythias and roses to the front of the house. The covered patio, with dining for 8, looks over the swimming pool which sits at the centre of the garden, with the house on one side, and the summer kitchen on the other. There is a small poolhouse for the pumping equipment, and behind that, a table tennis table in the shade of some mature pine trees. The paved patio continues around the pool with ample space for sun loungers.
Outwith the terraced area there are extensive grounds with trees, shrubs, and areas for sitting in the shade, playing table tennis or boules, or just enjoying the tranquility. There is a swing set suitable for very young children.
There are neighbours' gardens on 3 sides, and a vineyard with views to the mountains on the fourth. The Alberes Mountains are easily visible from the house, and the summit of Mt Canigou can be seen from several parts of the garden.
We provide all linen and towels, including beach towels. For guests staying more than a week, we provide a weekly change of bed linen. A 25% deposit is payable at the time of booking, with the balance due 8 weeks before the start of the holiday.
A security and cleaning deposit of £250 is payable with the balance, and is refundable in full at the end of the holiday after the house has been cleaned and checked. We expect guests to leave the house clean and tidy, so that our housekeeper can prepare beds and do the final clean in preparation for the next guests.
The Languedoc-Roussillon region
Languedoc-Roussillon is one of the most interesting regions of France. It has a long and varied history, the Roussillon area having been part of Spain until 1659. There are prehistoric sites, Cathar Castles, ancient abbeys, peaceful cloisters, and some of the most beautiful villages in France. Add to that the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean, and it is easy to see why this area attracts so many visitors each summer.
Pyrenees-Orientales is the southernmost region of France, and has a strong Catalan feel. Many older residents speak the Catalan language, and see themselves as Catalan first and French second. There are several World Heritage sites within a reasonable drive, including Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi.
The resorts of the Costa Brava can be reached for a day out, and the Salvador Dali Museum at Figueras is as bizarre and unique as the man himself.
Fourques literally means 'fork' and it stands at a crossroads on the old road between the attractive provincial market town of Thuir to the north and the artists' favourite town of Céret to the south. It has an ancient church, and the vestiges of the old town walls can still be seen in the old part of the village. It is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and orchards.
We recommend an interesting walk from the house round the vineyards, with views of Mt Canigou, the Alberes Mountains, The Spanish border, the sea, and the Corbiere Mountains in the distance. Fourques has a Cave Co-operative where local wines can be sampled and bought, from the pricey to the cheap and cheerful - take your own container - and advice sought on the best wine for your evening meal. There are several other wine producers in the village, as well as a baker, a general store, a paper shop, a chemist, a hairdresser, and a garage. The medieval village of Castelnou, ranked amongst the most beautiful in France, is less than 20 minutes' drive away. The pretty seaside town of Collioure is about half an hour's drive, and Port Vendres and Banyuls are just a few minutes further down the coast. Perpignan has an interesting old centre, and Narbonne has both Roman and medieval remains.
The beaches along the coast stretch from Leucate in the north to Le Racou, near Collioure. Further south there are rocky coves with some excellent snorkelling at Cerbere where there is an underwater nature trail. There is a tennis club in the village, where visitors can book a court for a small fee.
