Ristie is situated on a working croft in the stunning northen end of Foula where the multi coloured Shetland Sheep famous for their fine Shetland Wool, thrive.
Guests can walk to the nearby coast in seconds taking in absolutely stunning views of the nearby sea stacks, boulder beach, or spectacular 800 to 1200ft cliffs.
Teeming bird life can be found all around - stroll to the nearby "Kittiwake's Haa" and hear the echoing and beautiful cry of the Kittiwake Gull or watch the Gannets dive for food a little way off the coast. Avoid the nesting areas of the rare and territorial Great Skuas and Arctic Skuas or be prepared to dodge their swoops!
The Shetland Isles region
With the highest standard of living in Scotland, Shetland boasts modern amenities, stunning scenery, very friendly local people, a thriving world class standard of traditional and contemporary live music, clean oceans, thronging bird life and very high quality local produce.
Music and cultural festivals include the world famous Shetland Folk Festival, the Jazz festival, Blues Festival, Food Festival, Fiddle and Accordian Festival, the list goes on - all have in common the unique Shetland friendly atmosphere & the high standard of quality found throughout the isles.
The thriving local bird life is complemented by a huge seal population, sea otters, and the ubiquitous shetland sheep and ponies.
The word Foula is derived from an old Norn word "Fugloy" meaning "Bird Island" - the reason for this is abundantly evident to anyone who visits. The island boasts spectacular cliff and coastal scenery and offers a unique sense of place; many visitors return again and again to renew their connection and soak up the laid back, relaxed atmosphere.
Activities include hill walking, bird watching, sea fishing, and enjoying the amazing scenery. The local ranger service provides guided walks by knowledgable and friendly locals for those interested in the unique local flora and fauna.
Foula is a very relaxing, laid-back and friendly island and most people are visibly refreshed and relaxed after a week here.
While it is possible to phone in supplies and to obtain local produce there is no shop on the isle so it is necessary to bring supplies.
