Home description

"Pickle cottage" comfortably sleeps 12, plus cots. Accommodation includes well appointed light and fresh traditional oak beamed kitchen and utlity room. It has a large spacious salons with cosy woodburning inglenook fireplaces. 'Pickle cottage' offers 5, bedrooms and 1, bathroom. 1, shower room. stairgates are fitted and highchairs are available on request.

'Pickle cottage' before renovation was the farmhouse and old milk parlour and hayloft, and now! offering modern-day comfort with original traditional features, all the rooms have been individually furnished to show the local region.

The large heated family sized plunge pool is available to all guests, Sunloungers and patio furniture as standard.


Bed & Breakfast available double room 50 euros, family room 76 euros, single 35 euros per night including continental breakfast. (Please note: B&B not available during peak season) (more information can be found on our website)

The Brittany / Ille-et-Vilaine region

Brittany where do I start ! Brittany has the largest coastline in all of France. An immense garden between sky & sea surrounded by stretches of jagged coastline. Brittany offers original. first class cuisine and boasts the second highest number of Michelin-starred chefs in France. Many other well known French culinary regions can only dream of having such an array of fresh, high quality produce close at hand. Beautiful beaches, quite roads and bustling town markets. Just over the border into Normandy apple orchards grown for it`s sparkling cider, specialities such as creamy Camembert cheeses, heady calvados apple brandies are a must. The climate here on average for the summer months is between 24c to 30c great for tanning around the pool. Magical towns & villages with local street entertainers, fetes, festivals and events. Champrenus Zoo & the Bayeux tapestry plus the city under the sea all close by !

Golfing holidays always available all year! beautiful inland and links courses.
(Les Ormes) Near the castle (16th century), in the heart of a 370-acre estate, Les Ormes golf course is a superb place for relaxation. The course is set in wooded parkland amongst age-old trees and natural lakes. This is a challenging course, but is nevertheless suitable for all players whatever their handicap thanks to its staggered tees. The clubhouse is located in the castle's 18th century outbuildings. 18 hole par 72 course.

Le Tronchet nr, Saint Malo
Located in the heart of the Surcouf family's hunting grounds, just 25 minutes from St Malo & Dinard, lies the 27 hole ''Saint Malo Golf Club'' Spectacular backdrops of the forest of ''Mesnil'', and the lake of ''Mirloup'', the course provides a unique challenge with the combination of the water hazards (13 holes), granite rocks and natural surroundings. The clubhouse enjoys panoramic views over the lake. Bar & restaurant also to be enjoyed.

The best & cleanest sandy beaches some with rockpools! fine sandy beaches and no pebbles are very secluded and a close secret to the French & us!!! Come see the highest tides in the world and then the 15 metre drop at low tide it's amazing.

Brittany has the best coastal paths in France so if your preference is hiking or just a gentle walk, the marked paths offer easy routes or for experienced walker maybe the challenging 10 km route to the west.

Le Mont Saint Michel offers guided walks across the bay at low tide from the salt marshes to the Island abbey.

Dol de Bretagne offers a challenging climb to the top of this extinct volcano where you will find a breathtaking view of the bay and views of the seaside town of Cancale.

Avranches: lively market town, restaurants, beautiful gardens overlooking the bay of Mont St Michel.

Mont St Michel: the 2nd most visited tourist attraction in france ; island monastery; connected to the mainland by a causeway, full of narrow winding streets with restaurants, cafes and museums; on a clear day the view from the top is breathtaking.

Cancale: fishing village with oyster banks, famous for its fish restaurants; exhilerating drive on the old coast road.

Visit ''Hirel'' the home of the Moule frites and dine at the restaurant overlooking the mussel beds also the tasty local grown bunches of Garlic sold at the side of the road.

Fougeres: market town with the largest walled castle in Europe.

St Malo: the old pirate town is completely walled, a lively area with shops, restaurants & museums; steeped in history, this town with its rampart walls overlook 12, different beaches and islands and racing yachts in the marina too. The tall ships race visits once a year,

Rennes: capital of Brittany & lively university town, has everyting a large town needs shops, riverside walks, etc.

Combourg: Chateau once the home of Chateaubriand.

A little further afield:
Caen: large city and capital of lower normandy & home of William the conqueror castle.

Bayeux: beautiful small town famous for its tapestry depicting the battle of Hastings in 1066.

Jersey / Guersey: daily boat trips from St Malo or Granville.

Horse riding just 5 minutes away.

Horse riding in the bay of Mont St Michel, you can take a superb ride across the sands and surrounding countryside of the bay. All ages and levels catered for. Prices 14 euros per hour.

: The two nearest ports are ''St Malo'' which is 50 minutes away and ''Caen'' 90 minutes through beautiful Breton & Norman countryside. We can offer ferry discount of 15% with Brittany ferries there website is www.brittanyferries.com LDlines is a budget ferry company at the port of Le Havre. If travel is by euro tunnel its less than 5 hours on smooth easy roads.

: Cheap flights are available from ryanair from Stansted/Luton to our local airport Dinard which is 50 km from La Rafoulais, Car hire is available from the airport.

In 'Pickle cottage' the spacious cosy salons with large exposed oak beams and large inglenook fireplaces has in it's salons english TV, DVD, VIDEOS, CD player, Books galore to unwind too in front of the woodburning stoves. The five bedrooms are all individually decorated and furnished. The double bedrooms have large comfortable beds overlooking the Breton countryside. There is a large family bedroom sleeping three. And the other two bedrooms has two single beds including bunk beds.
Remarkable views of the breton countryside with cows passing twice a day for milking.

A wonderful week at 'La Rafoulais' enjoyed the most fantastic weather. There can't be anywhere better in the world to be when the sun is shining in Brittany. Fantastic beaches plus the best rock pooling ever. John is a great host who will advise and inform as required. Buy some fresh eggs a wonderful tasty treat. Downside, we put on 3kgs each. Staying in our cottage 'Allouette' had everything we needed for a relaxing holiday.
