The Tuscany region

The Tuscan Region of Italy is well known for its warm balmy summers, beautiful countryside, rolling hills, mouth - watering food, and of course its towns and villages, rich with mediaeval architecture…

The Garfagnana region of Tuscany, often known as its ‘Green Lung’ is situated away from the milling crowds that can often be found at the most famous Tuscan locations and is totally unspoilt, remaining untouched by tourism. The scenery is spectacular, green and mountainous with views of both the Apuane and Appenine mountains at every turn…And, due to the altitude whilst the weather can be very hot, it is always pleasantly cool for sleeping…

The food is usually home made, using home grown produce, and is typically simple and extremely tasty. Prices here remain very reasonable due to the fact that food is prepared with the locals, and not tourists in mind…The local wine is cheap and surprisingly drinkable!

The pace of life is slow and peaceful – spend your days enjoying secluded picnics, swimming in rivers, or watching locals play bocce or ‘cheese throwing’. Visit hundreds of ancient hill top villages, or relax at home basking in stunning scenery. For ‘townie’ days, visit the mediaeval towns of Barga, Lucca, Castelnuovo, with Pisa and Florence within easy reach too… This is Olde Worlde Italy.

Rustico Te Kawa is situated a short way from the walled village of Ceserana itself, which is a pretty post card place.

There are no facilities in the village, but a couple of kms from the house is the village of Migliano with its basic shop, bar, post office and pharmacy. There is also a restaurant 2km away. For a good choice of shops, bars and restaurants, the bustling market town of Castelnuovo is a 10/15 min drive and this town also has a famous Thursday morning market, and a train station for easy exploring.

The mediaeval town of Barga is only a 20 min drive, and the walled City of Lucca less than an hour. Florence can be found 90 mins away, and Pisa 1 hr 15 mins. For country days, there are the Apuane Alps, the 2 National parks, and hundreds of hilltop villages to explore.

"Delightful rustic retreat"

Tuscan Retreats were both very help from initial inquiries through the duration of our stay. The information pack supplied prior to arrival was very useful.
The property is in a delightfully peaceful hillside location and is full of character being thoughtfully converted from a stable. The kitchen is spacious & very well equipped and there are wonderful views across the valley from the rooms. All was clean & tidy upon our arrival.
Access is 40m up a steep, grassed, track from the parking area, this made this clear form our first inquiry.
The only problem with the property we experienced was at 9pm on Sunday evening when the mains water supply failed. We contacted Lorraine at Tuscan Retreats & she quickly found out that that this was due to a burst water main. She offered to send her husband around with bottled water that evening. The water was back on the next morning.
We were unlucky with unseasonably cold & wet weather at the end of May 2013 and unable to make better use of the pool which did highlight the lack of outdoor wriggle room for young children away from the pool as the property is on a steeply sloped site.
We will definitely be booking our next stay with Tuscan Retreats and would enjoy returning to Rustico in the summer months.

"Amazing mountain escape"

Our family of 2 adults and 4 children (aged between 7 and 14) had the most amazing time in this well equipped hillside cottage. The views are stunning, especially from the pool. We couldn't bring… More

We are glad you enjoyed your stay at Te Kawa!! Everyone says it is the most wonderful retreat, and we get lots of repeat bookings, and we also can't understand the lack of reviews, since the guest book is full of praise!
We hope to be able to accommodate you again.

"A lovely, rustic, rural retreat"

We loved this hillside haven. The views are incredible, it's very prviate without being cut off, and within reach of a range of great towns and villages. Plenty of restaurants around, though we enjoyed eating on the balcony as the sun went down.

The cottage is well equipped, homely and comfortable and the pool is the biggest and best we've seen in a private villa.

Highly recommended.
