The Tuscany region

The Tuscan Region of Italy is well known for its warm balmy summers, beautiful countryside, rolling hills, mouth - watering food, and of course its towns and villages, rich with mediaeval architecture…

The Garfagnana region of Tuscany, often known as its ‘Green Lung’ is situated away from the milling crowds that can often be found at the most famous Tuscan locations and is totally unspoilt, remaining untouched by tourism. The scenery is spectacular, green and mountainous with views of both the Apuane and Appenine mountains at every turn…And, due to the altitude whilst the weather can be very hot, it is always pleasantly cool for sleeping…

The food is usually home made, using home grown produce, and is typically simple and extremely tasty. Prices here remain very reasonable due to the fact that food is prepared with the locals, and not tourists in mind…The local wine is cheap and surprisingly drinkable!

The pace of life is slow and peaceful – spend your days enjoying secluded picnics, swimming in rivers, or watching locals play bocce or ‘cheese throwing’. Visit hundreds of ancient hill top villages, or relax at home basking in stunning scenery.

For ‘townie’ days, visit the mediaeval towns of Barga, Lucca, Castelnuovo, with Pisa and Florence within easy reach too…

This is Olde Worlde Italy.

Fosciandora

The villa is 1 hr north of Lucca high in the hills of Garfagnana Northern Tuscany. The views & walking opportunities are the real attraction of this property but there are plenty of restaurants and bars in the market town of Castelnuovo, famous for its Thursday morning market (12 min drive) and also in the beautiful mediaeval Barga which is a 20 min drive.

There is a small bar/shop in two of the closest villages one of which is less than a km away, and a restaurant a 5 min drive too.

Airports-Pisa 80 mins; Florence 1hr 50 mins;Genoa 2 hrs 30 mins; Milan 3 hr 15 mins; Bologna 2 hrs 30 mins.

"Perfect Destination"

Spent a lovely week at this accommodation. The house is large and well equipped for all your holiday needs, the only thing it was lacking was a microwave and toaster. We did not have access to the low… More

Thank you for your review. Sorry about the microwave and toaster, it seems the family before had taken them downstairs and the cleaners didn' think to bring them up. This is now on their checklist!
The downstairs is only available to guests hiring all 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms and the second living room and second kitchen/diner which is of course a more expensive option. We tend to place guests hiring just the 3 bedrooms upstairs since this only happens outside of July and August, and the upstairs is lighter, airier, and warmer if the weather changes. It also has the best views and the terrace leading from the kitchen for al fresco dining. There is also the terrace behind the house. We will now make the ground floor an option if guests prefer.
The pool is cleaned thoroughly and tested twice weekly. If there is a heavy storm causing problems at the pool, we can arrange further cleans on request. We also leave a net for fishing out insects or for little animals that may fall in the pool. I am afraid the week that you stayed was unusually wet and all the pools in the area seemed to be filled with baby frogs every few hours - a phenomenon not seen in the entire 15 years we have been letting. All pools in the area seemed to suffer the same fate. Hopefully it won't recur.
We are glad that despite these issues you had a great time!

"Best villa yet!!"

I can't imagine a more perfectly sited villa, the views are awe inspiring, the pool is beautiful and the villa has everything, apart from television, the satellite is no longer available. The Gar… More

Thank you for your review, and we are glad you loved the villa and the area! We are very sorry about the TV - this house had English TV, but the BBC and ITV have moved their satellites and it is no longer possible to get these channels. There are still some freeview satellite channels available and the owner has installed Italian TV so that major sporting events shown in Italy can hopefully still be seen.

"Terrific Tuscany Trip"

Four of us just spent a marvellous week relaxing at this fabulous house. The property is a barn conversion and has been completed to a high specification with excellent furnishings and fittings. It is a very spacious house spread over three storeys with two kitchens (large) and two living areas. The swimming pool is excellent and clean though chilly in May!
The house is about a ten minute slow drive from the main road and takes you through some narrow roads and sharp bends. But it is worth the drive! The location is beautiful with views across the valley to distant hills/mountains/villages. A great place to relax with a glass or three of vino rosso and plate of antipasti.
The surrounding Tuscan area provides opportunities to visit villages/restaurants/towns with ease. Lucca is the nearest sizeable town and worth a visit. We used the train service from there to visit Florence and the service is cheap (compared to England), comfortable and reliable.
5 out of 5 for the property. Will visit again.
