The lodges site and surrounding area have an abundance of visiting birds and wild life, Golden Eagles, Osprey, Sea Eagles, Buzzards, Red Deer, Seka Deer to name but a few.

But even more exciting, we are very fortunate to have a family of resident Pine Martens, Britains second most rarest mammal, they visit the feeding station on each of the veranda's to find their favourite treat of Peanut Butter, Jam or even a raw egg. They are here through out the day but are much more active during the early to late evening.

Fort William

The nearest shop that sells just about everything is 3 miles away, nearest fuel station 3 and half miles away.

The nearest pub in walking distant is The Eagle Inn on the Water, a floating Dutch Barge this is seasonal, open from February to end October.

The Invergarry Castle Hotel serving excellent traditional Scottish food with a traditional Scottish welcome is only 3 and half miles as is the Invergarry Hotel, also serving excellent Highland Fayre.

Further north 10 miles, is Fort Augustus, a small village but very popular with tourists, bursting with shops, hotels, restaurants, not to mention the opportunity to watch the boats go through the loch system into Loch Ness.

Further north is Drumnadrochit, 30 miles, Inverness. 47 miles.

Heading south from the lodges is Spean Bridge, 12 miles, 2 Hotels, a restuarant, Anoch Mor, 15 miles, excellent Ski Centre and the famous Down Hill World Mountain Bike Championships is held here.

On to Fort William, 26 miles from the lodges, here is the base of Ben Nevis, the tallest mountain in Great Britain, 4406 ft!

"An absolute treat"

I live in Aberdeen and have always wanted to explore the western side of Scotland. When my folks visited from South Africa I thought it would be the ideal opportunity for heading out to the west for a mini breakaway with them and my fiance.

I stumbled across Great Glen Lodges, booked it and off we went. Got to our cottage which was the Bramble Lodge and loved it from the get-go. Cosy, intimate, character, well equipped and convenient are all words that springs to mind.

We were fortunate enough to get a downpour of snow which is a bit of a novelty coming from SA. We couldn't help ourselves and had to "braai" both nights we were there. Situated on the edge of Loch Lochy all the lodges offers spectacular views of the Loch and the mountains in the area.

The owners are extremely nice and make you feel most welcome. The place definitely has "see you again soon" written all over it!

"Peace perfect peace"

This was our second time visiting the Great Glen Lodges staying in the bramble lodge. The lodge is clean, comfortable, cosy and fully equipped. The area is simply beautiful, the view from the lodge is specatular and the boat trip with Ian is wondeful! Great base to explore the surrounding area and climb munros. It is great getting back to the lodge to relax after a day of exploring/walking and if the weather is nice you can enjoy a BBQ at the lodge patio area. The laudry facilites are excellent and the grounds are well kept . Ian and Claire are just lovely and always give a warm welcome. We really do hate leaving here!! We hope to return later in the year.

Thank you so very much for taking the time to write such a lovely review.
It was lovely to welcome you both back again to Bramble Lodge and were so pleased you managed to complete the two Munro's to the rear on your second day here!
The weather was on our side, we know how busy you are at work so to see you both relaxing in the sun with the BBQ going was the icing on the cake!

"Wild Scotland in comfort - with pine martens on the verandah!"

I came across Great Glen Lodges when searching on the Internet for information about pine martens, and was delighted at the thought of staying somewhere which had them as regular visitors - so the next time I found myself considering a break, I checked the website for availability, rang Claire and Ian McLachlan to book Bramble Lodge, and headed for the Highlands...

The lodges are in a wonderful location, on the shore of Loch Lochy in the middle of the Great Glen, with spectacular views of loch and mountains. Access is via a couple of miles of narrow, twisting lane (with spectacular views), followed by a further half-mile or so of unmade track, so could be daunting for a less-confident driver (or anyone with a new sports car), but my Mini Cooper made it! With only five lodges on site, and well away from main roads, the site is pleasantly quiet, though as Ian and Claire live on site and are friendly and happy to help when needed, I never felt isolated.

The lodge itself is delightful: a real log cabin, but with effective heating, comfy beds, a well fitted-out kitchen and bathroom, and large living space with views onto the balcony. Bramble Lodge is one of the smaller lodges, sleeping a maximum of four in one double and one twin room, but probably has the best views up and down the loch.

The local wildlife is a delight: as well as the pine martens (I saw one on three occasions: they love bread and strawberry jam, though they sometimes lick the jam off and leave the bread for the birds!), a great spotted woodpecker was a regular visitor, as were a flock of chaffinches and other small birds. The wider area is great for wildlife-watching, too - I saw a golden eagle in Glen Nevis, and balck-throated divers on Loch Shiel - as well as for general sightseeing.

Distances between one town or village and another tend to be long in the Highlands, but once you take this into account Great Glen Lodges are well-placed for visiting Fort William, Ben Nevis, Glencoe, Oban, Inverness, Loch Ness, Urquart Castle, Skye, Elean Donan Castle, Loch Shiel... all of which I did (in six days - I was busy!) Having said this, Great Glen Lodges would also be a wonderful place just to relax... With the nearest pubs and restaurants some distance away (and the possibility of seeing a pine marten), I tended to cook and relax at home once I'd returned from a day's exploring, though I gather there are some good places to eat out in the local area.

Would I go back - YES! Would I recommend Great Glen Lodges to other people? Yes if they love wildlife-watching, walking, motoring, photography, painting, or just being surrounded by spectacular Scottish scenery. A minor caveat: as the site slopes steeply, it may not be ideal for some people with mobility impairments - if this sounds like you or one of your party, don't be put off, but do ring Claire and Ian to discuss, as some of the lodges may be easier to access than others.

If you decide to visit, I hope you had as wonderful a time as I did.

Thank you so very much for taking the time to write such an amazing review!
Your attention to detail is so accurate and paints a wonderful Picture for someone who has never been before!
We are so pleases that you enjoyed your stay so immensely, even down to our little windy road for the last quarter of a mile. True to say, to get to somewhere so Beautiful it is well worth it!
It was a sheer pleasure having you stay here with us and are so pleased that you managed to meet our family of Pine Martens!
We would love to see you again sometime in the future.
