The Florida / Florida Gulf Coast region
South West Florida is a wonderful year-round holiday destination and our villa is situated in South Fort Myers, just a five minute drive from uncrowded white sandy beaches. Daytime highs rarely drop below 75 F (24 C), even at Christmas - it’s a pleasure to enjoy warmth and sunshine during England’s depressing winter!
There are a number of day trips for anyone wishing to venture further afield. North of Ft Myers, there is attractive Punta Gorda and Venice; also Myakka State Park. A little further north is Sarasota with its picturesque marina and the wonderful "white sugar" beaches at Lido and Siesta Keys; then north again is Longboat Key with exclusive shopping at St Armand’s Circle. Continuing north brings you to “laid back” Anna Maria Island where you can enjoy beaches, sunsets and relaxed dining.
Heading south, you will find upmarket Naples with its lovely shops and art galleries, or take one of the many cruises which give a glimpse of the multi-million dollar waterside homes. The fascinating Florida Everglades are inland from Naples and an airboat trip is a very interesting and exciting way to explore this intriguing and mysterious “River of Grass”. Alternatively, there are naturalist-led tours or you can explore on your own.
Fort Myers / South Fort Myers area
Our luxurious home is ideally placed, just a couple of minutes drive from a choice of supermarkets, a pharmacy, banks, a post office and restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets.
There is plenty to occupy anyone enjoying pastimes associated with the ocean – swimming, sailing, fishing, dolphin spotting cruises or simply strolling along the shores, sunbathing or collecting shells, and admiring the truely outstanding sunsets. There are many challenging and attractive golf courses in the area or, for the less serious golfers, there are several well planned crazy golf courses which are a lot of fun. For those wanting to indulge in retail therapy there are shopping malls, boutiques and factory outlets nearby. There are also theatres, a sports stadium and cinemas in the area. Worth a visit are the riverside winter homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, especially at Christmas when they are magically transformed by a myriad of lights. December is also a time to enjoy the local boat parades and the beautifully decorated houses and shopping malls.
Ft Myers beach stretches 7 miles down Estero Island, from the lively area round the pier to Lover's Key at the southern end and there is a trolley bus service which runs the length of the island - a fun alternative to driving oneself. Key West, the most southerly point in the States, is easily reached by the daily boat service from Ft Myers.
The villa is equally close to the causeway giving access to the unspoilt islands of Sanibel and Captiva. Apart from its fame for shelling, Sanibel is also the home of the wonderful J N Ding Darling Nature Reserve - perhaps hiring a bike to enjoy the wildlife at close quarters. It is possible to reach Boca Grande and the small island of Cabbage Key by boat from Capita and sunset cruises are also popular.
There are many beachside and waterfront restaurants to enjoy in the area as well as the well-known chains and family diners. The choice when eating out ranges from fine dining to inexpensive.
How to get there
There is an international airport at Ft Myers (20 minutes from our home), with UK flights via various US hub cities. Miami and Tampa, each about 2.5 hours drive away, have direct flights from the UK, as does Orlando (3.5 hrs driving time) and Sanford, just north of Orlando. It is easy to put together a holiday that suits individual needs and we are happy to discuss this. Car hire is readily available at all airports and this is best booked in this country ahead of travel; again we would be pleased to give help and advice.
