The Southwest Gulf Coast region
Colonial Point is located in South Fort Myers, on Florida's Gulf Coast, just south of the frost line. It's just 20 minutes from nearby South West Florida Regional Airport (RSW), so very easy to get to.
The area is perfect for any style of vacation. If you want peace and relaxation, the islands and their beaches are perfect for that. Beautiful white sand with space for everyone, even at holiday periods, and warm water to splash around in to your heart's content. This part of Florida is less developed than most, and still has many wild places where you can walk for miles and enjoy the scenery & wildlife. You would never dream you are in the same state as Disney world & Miami.
But if you or your family need more to do, this area is perfect for that too, for adults and children alike. There plenty of places to go to occupy enquiring minds, and you can boat & fish to your heart's content.
Fort Myers Beach is where the organised beach sport is - para sailing, volleyball, etc. And within a 2 hour drive there is much more than you could ever do in one vacation - the Everglades, Busch Gardens, Sarasota and Naples, wonderful aquaria, Arcadia's rodeo, and top class sport aplenty.
South west Florida's beaches are lovely. The sand is fine & white, and the water is warm for most of the year. The shells are spectacular too. Our favourite beaches are Lighthouse, on Sanibel island; the beach at the end of Captiva, and Lovers Key. Barefoot Beach at Bonita is great too. These are wild beaches, with no organised activities, many of them with little or no development around them. You get great sunsets from almost any beach in the area.
If you want something more lively, perhaps with more organised activities, then Fort Myers Beach may be more for you. It has all sorts of things going on at holiday & vacation times: volleyball, sand castle building contests, parasailing, windsurfing, etc. Just about any form of water-based activity is catered for.
The dining in the area covers the entire range from all the expected family favourites to haute cuisine. Just drive down any big road & you'll find an Arizona Pizza, IHOP, Ruby Tuesday, McDonalds, Burger King, etc. We especially love the local seafood, and on our own website you will find a selection of restaurants we particularly like.
If you want to go a bit further afield, here are some ideas for day trips that we have particularly enjoyed:
- Take a boat trip from Salty Sam's Marina aboard the Star of Orion, a beautiful yacht, daytime or sunset.
- Visit the Ringling Museum, or Mote aquarium, and take a boat trip on Sarasota Bay.
- Naples - walk on the pier, watch the fishermen and spot the dolphins. Visit Tin City, shop at an upscale mall, and have lunch at Venetian Bay.
- St Petersburg - visit St Pete's Pier or the Dali museum, and maybe go down to Fort de Soto's beautiful beach.
- Everglades - drive down to Everglades City and Chokoloskee, then take a boat trip round the 10,000 islands.
- Also in the Everglades, go to Shark Valley & take the tram tour
- Take an air boat ride on Lake Trafford, Myakka River State Park or in the Everglades.
- Spend the day on Sanibel & Captiva ... start at Lighthouse beach, walk around the tip of the island looking for dolphins in the surf, go to Ding Darling wildlife reserve & take the tram tour, then drive up to Andy Rosse Lane on Captiva & have a drink & maybe eat at the Mucky Duck, watching the sun go down.
You get wonderful sunsets of the west coast of Florida, and there's no better place to watch them than Bunche Beach, just 15 minutes from the house. Take a deckchair - the locals do
Lakes Park is within a 5 minute drive of the house, and it's a real gem. You can hire a family-sized Surrey or bikes. There's also a well equipped playground, fountain play park, picnic areas, ice cream shop and a fun miniature train ride. The park puts on a show at holiday periods (it has its very own Easter Bunny, for instance!), and parts are sometimes lit after dark. It also has fresh water lakes, with canoes & water bikes for hire
The wildlife in Florida is fantastic, and it's everywhere, not just in the major wildlife reserves. From the house, you will see herons, osprey, wood storks and egrets (and perhaps the odd frog, snake & maybe even a small alligator occasionally in the lake!).
Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve is only about 15 minutes from the house, and is a great wild place to see alligators & birdlife.
There are places further afield that are well worth a visit too. Choose from the Everglades, Ding Darling Wildlife Preserve on Sanibel, Corkscrew Swamp Preserve down by Naples, or maybe Lake Trafford near Imokalee. The Everglades and Lake Trafford have air boats, as well as more alligators than you can imagine. Ding Darling has a tramcar. Corkscrew is a board walk. And Shark Valley in the Everglades has a tram tour. Alternatively you can bike the Shark Valley loop, but be aware that there are lots of alligators!
Dolphins sometimes play in the surf on the beaches. It can happen anywhere, but Sanibel's Lighthouse beach is particularly good - spend an hour there at the tip of the island, and you're almost guaranteed to see them. And if you go on a boat trip, they will often play in the wake. If you're there in the winter, the amazing manatees come into the warm waters of the Caloosahatchee River (near the FPL power plant).
