The Lazio region

The region of Lazio, rich of culture and nature, is situated in the centre of Italy.

Hilly landscapes with olive- and vine cultivations and the lakes Bracciano and Bolzena characterizes the north of the region. The culturally heydays are the famous Etruscan excavation and the sulphur-wells, where you can spoil your skin under the open sky.

Rome is the culturally and economically center as well as the capital city of Italy, located directly in the heartland of Lazio.

Mountains are in the south, rising above 2000 meters; lower, heading the coast the gentle green slopes are overgrown with orange-and lemon trees and olive-and vine cultivations.

The coast is uneven, sandy beaches alternate rocky cliffs, suggestive little bays and hills are covered with Mediterranean spontaneous vegetation (macchia mediterranea).

Thousands of years of history signed the landscape, increasing the cultural value of this land:  Excavations from the Roman and the pre-Roman time (Etruscan, Ausonia and Aurunci), medieval towns, monasteries and convents, make the stay in Lazio always an astonishing experience.

The region has many nature reserves and little protected oasis; very beautiful for short walks, hiking tours or trekking.

The Garigliano river natural park at the board with Campania offers multiple opportunities to come in contact with the lush river vegetation and the wild animals that inhabit along the banks.

Thermal springs are to find in the region of Viterbo, Tivoli and Fiuggi and in the south in Suio.

Located in the south of the region, The Pontine Islands join sensational nature, clear water, characteristic fisher towns and Roman culture. The main Island Ponza is also called pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The food and wine tradition might deserve its own chapter: fish and seafood on the coast; rustically cuisine in the countryside (meat and sausage, cheese and a lot of different vegetables), buffalo mozzarella, and olives of Gaeta are only some examples.

Lots of tasty and important wines are available for experts and curious tasters, thanks to the unique warm weather and the composition of the soil.

The area between south of Lazio and northern Campania, named Campania Felix by the ancient Roman, produces since centuries a particular wine, called Falernus, one of the many wine excellence of the area.

Formia

Nature reserve Aurunci Mountains:

The Gulf of Gaeta is surrounded by the gigantically mountain range of the Aurunci Mountains. They rise to a height of 1500 meters, the foothills stretch to the sea. The nature reserve Aurunci Mountains (Parco Naturale Dei Monti Aurunci) is excellent right for long hiking tours. Footpaths are marked with signs coloured in red-white. Hiking maps are available in the tourist information in Scauri, Formia and Gaeta.

The panorama is like a scenic view from the Vesuvius to the Circeo. It is a gorgeous view; because of the short distance to sea and heights.

Sea-faced rocks´ are shaped by the rough sea winds and the rocks are overgrown with broom, mastic trees, myrtle, sage and heather. The northern slopes are overgrown with luxurious vegetation: oak forests, grove-and copper beeches. Important is also the occurrence from about 50 different kind of wild orchid.

Animal species: porcupines, badgers, edible dormouse's, peregrine falcons, foxes and rabbits.

Recently, the wolf resettled in the Aurunci Mountains.

Here, the farmers in the mountains live and work in harmony with nature.

Wanderers meet cow-and goat flocks quite often in the mountains.

In these small mountain villages (Maranola, Trivio, Castelonorato, Spigno Saturnia, Esperia and Campodimele), the old crafts are still being practised. All mountain villages have a historical centre.

Vine and olives are mainly cultivated at the lower heights, the foot of the Aurunci Mountains.

The Gulf of Gaeta is between Rome and Naples in the south of the region Lazio.

It is a special tip for enthusiasts of Italian culture and nature and for those who looking for relaxing holidays at the sea, enjoying the Italian “dolce vita”.

Along the coast you find the peninsula of Gaeta and the municipalities of Formia with its characteristic hillside hamlets and Minturno whose hilltop position allows the village to dominate the seaside hamlets of Scauri and Marina di Minturno.

Inland: the hills and slopes of the Aurunci Mountains are home to many ancient hillside villages such as Lenola, Campodimele, Itri, and Spigno Saturnia, Santi Cosma e Damiano and Castelforte with the spa town Suio Terme.

Sailing from the port of Formia, a two hour ferry ride (1 hour by hydrofoil) is all that is needed to reach a mall group of islands of volcanic origin (Ponza, Ventotene), whose splendid colours enrich enchanted beaches and picturesque secret bays, surrounded by a magnificent sea which is considered a real and proper divers' paradise. The Pontine Islands seem to lie just off the coast or fade into the distance depending on the weather and the season.

In summer there are also ferry rides to Ischia (80 km).

The scenery of the Gulf of Gaeta is various and unique: there is the coastal area, lovely green hills with lemon and olive groves and the typical hilly countryside.

On the coast you find the natural reserve Parco Regionale Riviera di Ulisse that invites for explorations and walks along the coast. Besides the typical flora and fauna you can visit important remains of a Roman villa.

On the coast between Gaeta and Sperlonga there is a paradise for free-climbers. The cliffs, mostly calcareous, offer a number of ways up that fit different skill levels. They all offer climbers the chance to feel in an extraordinary natural environment.

Enthusiasts of culture have the possibility to visit and see huge walls from the Pre-roman time of the Ausoni, Aurunci and Volci people and a lot of archaeological remains of the Roman Age. You can visit remains of aqueducts, thermal baths, and fish-farming basins, and villas, parts of the ancient Appian Way (Via Appia) and remains of the roman town Minturnae with the famous amphitheatre. Nowadays here you can visit theatre shows, music- and dance performance in the summer month.

Every hour there are train connections from the train stations Formia and Minturno-Scauri to Naples and to Rome the eternal city.

In day trips it is possible to visit Pompeii, the Coast of Amalfi, the Gardens of Ninfa, the Natural Park Abruzzi, Mount Cassino and Mount Vesuvius.

Protested from cold winds by the Aurunci Mountains, this area enjoys an extremely mild and Mediterranean climate. Also because of this a holiday in the winter months is very pleasant.
