About this location

The Lazio region

The territory of Lazio is characterized by its variability, with a prevalence of mountainous and hilly areas, the plains are mostly near the coast. Belong to the territory of Lazio also the "Pontine islands", some of which are accessible right from the port of Formia. Lazio has numerous parks, reserves and other protected natural areas.

Lazio is a region known worldwide for its historical content, artistic, archaeological, architectural, religious. The cultural value of the city of Rome was accompanied by hundreds of areas of interest scattered throughout the region.

Formia

Formia was a resort of great prestige in Roman times, here stayed personalities such as Cicero and Maecena. Currently, there are visible ruins of the medieval period (Castellone Tower), the tomb of Cicero, a source, an ancient cistern, called the "Cisternone" and the remains of the ancient port, all the Roman era.

From Formia, in 30 minutes (by car) you can reach Cassino, where you can visit the Abbey subject to a violent combat and bombing during the Second World War.

Formia is a seaside town with very large stretches of beach, composed of fine sand and clear water, overlooking the Gulf of Gaeta. It 'also adjacent to the town of Gaeta (4 kilometers), and therefore enjoys the important services and benefits of this location. Formia is in a strategic position to visit Rome and Naples, as well as some islands of great value.

The presence of a railway station in the center of Formia (away from the house 2,3 Km, but easy reachable even walking 25 minutes), allows you to reach Rome quickly (in about an hour and a half) with daily frequent trains. Naples can be reached by train in less than an hour.

From the port of Formia you can reach the islands of Ponza and Ventotene.

The city center is full of life, characterized by a main street with large elegant stores, bars, restaurants, shopping centers and parks. On the waterfront there are many private beaches equipped to provide hospitality with umbrellas and lounge chairs, open access and public areas, all with beach sand. You can practice all water sports (rowing, windsurfing, sailing), as well as take advantage from the coast in order to have healthy walks or practice running.

Formia, because of the mild climate, was also chosen for the construction of the National Olympic Preparation Centre.

In the evening, with their open-air bars and discos, Formia and Gaeta offer many opportunities to spend pleasant moments.

The kitchen allows you to enjoy different foods (meat, fish, delicious sweets), all of high quality and low cost, and above all to eat a pizza very similar to the Neapolitan one.

"Excellent location"

If you want to enjoy Formia and its beaches Villa Lena is an excellent location. The house is large, well equipped, and comfortable. The air conditioning works very well. A beautiful garden separates the house from the main road. Beyond that, and just a short stroll away, are the beaches of Vindicio with all their amenities. There are several restaurants and food stores within walking distance and many more just a few minutes' drive away, in the main town of Formia. The food in the area is excellent, from pizza, to pasta, seafood, the famous buffalo mozzarella, and ice cream. The owner was very welcoming and accommodating, gladly meeting us at our unusual time of arrival.

"fantastic location very close to beach yet easy walk to restaurants"

We have now stayed at Villa Lena twice, and this is the only property we have ever returned to for a holiday. It is comfortably furnished, very spacious and with lots of outdoor areas for sitting or eating. It is less than 5 minutes walk to the beach and slightly more for some local restaurants, but maybe 20-30 minutes walk to all the restaurants in the centre of Formia. The coast road runs infront of the property, but with a generous garden between, we found we were not disturbed by the traffic. The walk into town can be hot in the middle of the day, however walking along the beachfront makes it much more enjoyable. Formia has lots of facilities as it is not just a town for summer visitors. The majoiryt of tourists are Italian, but most shopkeepers are understanding of halting Italian if they do not speak English.

The owners are very friendly and helpful, and really want visitors to enjoy their time at Villa Lena.
