The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region
The Costa Blanca is commonly regarded as one of the most cosmopolitan areas in Europe, having a coastline of over 200 kms and made up of some of the finest beaches on the Mediterranean. Many of these beaches enjoy a 'blue flag' status - the highest award that can be given within the EU. Inland and you'll find hillsides covered with terraced vineyards and lush-green citrus orchards, a legacy of the agricultural traditions of the area, and dotted with charming villages full of narrow streets and flower-filled squares.
The inland areas of the Northern Costa Blanca are widely considered to be some of the most beautiful parts of rural Spain, boasting a magnificent array of lush vegetation, stunning mountain backdrops, olive and orange groves, vineyards and, early in the year, the wonderful scent of almond blossom.
For those seeking a more lively experience, Valencia is an ideal day-trip destination. It is Spain's third largest city and offers superb modern shopping facilities as well as a wonderful, traditional fresh meat, fruit and vegetable market. Alternatively visit Benidorm which boasts a 'happening' night scene, an animal park, an aquarium and a theme park (with one of the biggest roller coasters in Europe!).
The Costa Blanca region of Spain also has one of the best climates in the world as defined by the UN's World Health Organisation. Enjoying on average over 300 days of sunshine a year, summer temperatures rarely fall below 30C whilst winters are typically very mild with average temperatures around 18C.
Formentera del Segura area
Formentara is a traditional, historic Spanish village which offers a relaxing family break in the Vega Baja, surrounded by towering sierras of the southern Costa Blanca in the Alicante province. Formentera sits on the banks of the River Segura, situated centrally within the Costa Blanca region with a rich history and culture ruled previously by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Cathaginians, Romans, Visgoths and Moors. The village provides a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants.
Formentara is within easy distance of the myriad of tourist towns on the coast but is also within reach of a number historic, atmospheric towns, set inland in the rural and mountainous and fertile areas of the region. This is where you can experience real Spain. These are memorable rural places where life is undisturbed by the fast pace of the 21st century, with stunning scenery, hidden upland streams, vineyards and terraced valleys planted with almonds, oranges and olives.
As with all Spanish villages Formentera del Segura has its share of fiestas and celebrations. However in May there is one celebration unique to Formentera - “The Day of the Bicycle”, when many of the villagers take part in a race to celebrate the past and present “brotherhood of the people of the village”. In Formentera May is known as “The Month of Flowers” and there are many celebrations including a grand procession in honour of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception.
The closest beach is Guardamar del Segura (approx 15 minutes). A popular and pleasant tourist site with sandy beaches and a town with specialist world crafts markets, bars and restaurants and other shopping facilities.
Places to visit -
Castillo de Santa Barbara in Alicante - Admire the coastal views from this historical castle which was built by the Carthaginians, Romans and Moors.
