About this location
The Valenciana region
There are many activities that you may wish to consider. This is also an excellent area for horse riding, walking, cycling birdwatching & sailing it is very popular with windsurfers who usually travel to the Mar Menor where here you can coat yourself in the mud from the shores, which they say improves rheumatism and arthritis! There is plenty to see and explore in this region, which boasts many fine examples of Roman and Moorish architecture.
Mar Menor (Little Sea) is a unique area located on the east coast of Spain, within the region of Murcia, just above the city of Cartagena. Few regions have the good fortune to have both a saltwater lake and a Mediterranean shore. The region of Murcia has both and the salt water lake with an area of 170sq.km is known as Mar Menor, the largest salt water lake in Europe. Mar Menor is part of the Costa Calida.
The area dates back to prehistoric times but most remains found date from the Roman and Arabic periods. The Romans valued the area highly and developed a valuable salt industry. It was about 1000 years ago that the lake took on the appearance it has today. The Romans called it Belich and referred to it as a port of refuge. It was much deeper in those times so could cope with even the largest of vessels. Over the last hundred years or so, the area has developed into a tourist haven. As well as the natural importance of the area the mud and clay are said to have therapeutic properties, known for centuries.
The average annual temperature here is 17ºC and the average during the summer is above 21ºC. The winters are very mild, very rarely falling below 10ºC. Rain is also rare here. With over 3000 hours of sunshine a year and the mild climate, the water here can reach 30º in August.
Formentera Del Segura
Formentera del Segura is a small populated agricultural town that although is being developed still retains its old style charm ,it's got the one main road running through the middle, which (essentially) splits the village in two main parts with the old town to one side and the new developments to the other.
The town is located just 15 minutes from the coastal resort of Guardamar and is ideal for those of you that want the costa facilities but not hectic resort towns.
The apartments are a five minute walk from the village square (with it's quaint church) and town hall. Around this square you'll find small pubs and tapas bars and just a two minute drive will take you to the market town of Rojales with its many bars super markets, restaurants, Aqua Park and golf course.
Formentera is an ideal place to base yourself to explore the region with the ancient cities of Elche, Murcia, Cartegena just a short journey away as well as the theme parks of Terra Mitica 50 minutes to the north.
With it's panoramic views and surrounding mountain scenery, Formentera really is an ideal location to visit.
