The Central England/Cotswolds region

The Forest of Dean is an extensive area of ancient woodland stretching from Mitcheldean in the East as far west as the River Wye and south to the banks of the Severn. The region is rich in flora and fauna, and is beautiful in springtime when the woods are adorned with successive carpets of wild daffodils (Newent), bluebells and wood anenomes. Early morning or dusk are the best times of day to spot some of the wildlife including fallow deer and wild boar. For avid bird lovers the Forest of Dean is a joy, with the possibility of spotting the goshawks at New Fancy View, the peregrine falcons at Symmonds Yat Rock, dippers nesting in the banks of a stream or the pied flycatchers which make their nests in the hollowed out trunk of an oak tree. In summer be sure to look out for the many and varied butterflies which reside in the Forest including the white admiral, purple hairstreak and sliver washed fritillary.

The Forest is an undulating landscape and your walks may well be accompanied by the sound of a stream babbling along a valley bottom as well as strident birdsong. There are many views to be admired from the hill tops across Forest and rivers, towards the Malvern Hills or to the Welsh Mountains across the border. Try May Hill for the best vantage point over the Forest!

Forest of Dean

There is plenty to do in the local area! Here are some examples;

• The sculpture trail at Beechenhurst Lodge

• Puzzlewood - an old open cast mine reclaimed by the landscape

• The family cycle trail / trails for more advanced riders.

* Fishing with the Forest of Dean Angling Club (permit provided for free)

• Canoe/kayak hire available at various points along the River Wye

• The Dean Heritage Centre, museum and cafe with walks into the Forest from the centre

• Goodrich Castle, dating back to the 11th century perched on a hilltop above the River Wye

• Tintern Abbey , majestic ruins of a Cistercian abbey the banks of the river Wye

• Westons cider, find out about cider making and taste the various different ciders on offer

"Fantastic views, cute cottage"

We based our holiday around our dog, who loves a good forest, so this seemed the obvious choice. None of us were disappointed, we were right in the middle of the most stunning forest location with views to die for. It was refreshing to escape the rat race and hear nothing but birds singing and sheep bleating. The cottage was very cosy, and Lis and Karen had thought of everything, even including a towel for the dog.
The wildlife garden was a fantastic idea, with its little hide, although I think the exotic creatures were feeling a little shy, as we only saw squirrels and dragon flies, and a couple of Jays, didn't see any wild boar (not sure whether to feel happy or sad about that!)
The sheep that passed the cottage twice a day, having a quick nosey into the cottage as they passed were hilarious.
Would recommend as a relaxing, escape from the big smoke, and the dog have it the paws up too.
Fantastic for walking and mountain biking too.

Thank you very much for your review, we are glad you had such a good time in the forest. It really is a stunning place and we feel privileged to live here!

"I would happily live here.. its beautiful"

Beautiful cottage, perfect for short weekend breaks. Would liked to have been nearer a local pub/food place so that i could walk there and back safely at night/evening.

The owners were really welcoming, but did not intrude on my stay. We took our dog and it was perfect for her to run around the local fields/woods.

Would visit again, just need to get some time off work... :-)

Thank you

"a lovely located cottage."

We were one week at Wren cottage and it was a very nice week. The cottage is very nice, well equiped at a very quiet location.
You can hear the birds, the sheep, and the pheasant who returned every night under our window.
From here you can walk a lot and also visite places as Cardiff.
It is a nice place when you want a quiet relaxed stay.

So glad you had a great week at our cottage and thank you for your kind comments.

"Perfect relaxing getaway, great location for walks in Forest of Dean"

We have just returned from a long weekend at Wren Cottage. We found the cottage to be finished to a high standard and equipped with all you need from the kitchen to the fab log burner in the lounge.
There is a great safe, enclosed garden area just down from the cottage enabling our dog to run around as well as being a relaxing area to chill.
The location of the cottage allowed us to easily visit local areas of interest and complete walks we had found through The Pathfinder Guides, Wye Valley and Forest of Dean book. We walked, Symonds Yat, Goodrich and Tintern Abbey with Symonds Yat being our favourite.
Local pubs we found which allowed dogs were Red Hart Inn, The Dog and Muffler and The Rising Sun Inn. We have not been able to decide our favourite of these but it is between Red Hart Inn and The Dog and Muffler. All 3 were very welcoming and had no issue with taking our dog in. We also got a Chinese takeaway from Mitcheldean which was good.
Locally in Mitcheldean there was a coop which was good for fresh bread etc but nothing else there really and the local pubs do not allow dogs.
Although we were aware there was no wifi or internet service at the cottage, there is also no 3G anywhere locally, so when we were out and about and wanting to find local information, be aware you will not be able too. This is just what we have become used too, having all the information at the touch of a button so maybe just do all your research before you leave home.

Glad you and your dog had a lovely time in Wren Cottqge. We will have to try the Dog and Muffler for ourselves! Yes, internet access can be a bit problematic, however we do have Wifi in Little Owl if you come again.
