The Central England / Cotswolds / Gloucestershire region
The Forest of Dean lies in the extreme west of Gloucestershire, and borders Herefordshire and Monmouthshire. The area is easy to access, either from Gloucester, the M4 at Chepstow, or the M50 spur at Ross-On-Wye.
The area is steeped in history, with Offa's Dyke, the remains of iron age forts, Tintern Abbey and three Norman castles at Chepstow, Raglan and Goodrich.
The Forest of Dean area
The forest extends to 40 square miles with any number of footpaths, bridleways and cycle tracks to suit all ages and abilities. The Wye Valley is designated as an Area of Outstanding National Beauty with bird sanctuaries, steep cliffs and river side walks.
The Wye is one of the few rivers in the country that allows unrestricted navigation along most of its length, which makes it popular with canoeists.
For those who want to explore further afield, the cities of Hereford, Gloucester and Bristol are all less than an hour's drive, as are the race courses at Cheltenham, Chepstow and Hereford.
