About this location
The East Anglia region
Suffolk is less well known than our neighbours Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex, but there are many hidden gems to explore and great places to visit in this area. Within 20-30 minutes drive you have:
- Historical Bury St Edmunds, with its beautiful Abbey Gardens, cathedral, the only surviving Regency playhouse in Britain, and the smallest pub in Britain!
- Thetford forest, for walking and bike trails, nature and 'Go Ape' high-rope course
- Wicken Fen, the first Nature Reserve to be cared for by the National Trust.
- Ely with its magnificent cathedral, Oliver Cromwell's house, a lovely river and lots of cafés.
- Newmarket, 'The Home of Horse Racing' - visit the National Stud and the National Horse Racing Museum
- Anglesey Abbey, Gardens and Lode Mill, a Jacobean-style house with gardens and a working watermill. (National Trust)
- Ickworth House, a Georgian Italianate Palace set in an idyllic English landscape (National Trust)
- Cambridge: visit King's College Chapel, the colleges which make up Cambridge University, and 'The Backs'
You can reach the Suffolk coast in approximately 1 hour.
East Anglia has the lowest rainfall for the whole of the UK, and this area in particular seems to have its own micro-climate and often escapes the rain which falls in other nearby villages!
The cottage is perfectly located to swap the noise and bustle of a busy town for the birdsong and tranquility of a quiet village, and use as a base for exploring the local area.
The village of West Row itself has an award-winning fish & chip shop; a fast food take-away; a riverside pub (10 min walk via a footpath or road) which serves good pub fare at reasonable prices; a post office selling essentials, newspapers, sweets etc.; a playing fields with brand new children's play park; public tennis courts (£3 per play on good clay courts); riverside rural footpaths, and often stunning sunsets.
This property is in a rural village setting, and therefore you really do need a car as public transport is very limited.
The area is perfect for cycling as Suffolk is a very flat county. With advance notice I can provide free secure storage for your bikes.

Thank you so much for your kind review.
I'm always thrilled when things works out so well for families. I do try to think of everything you may need for a short break.
It's great to know that your children enjoyed the play park close by. It is one of the best in the area. The village worked hard to raise the money for it, and it is maintained well.
Please recommend away, and consider it again if you need a base.
Thank you, Sara

Glad you enjoyed your stay so much!
Yes, there's quite a bit to do locally if you're happy to use the footpaths near the cottage, or wander to the riverside pub, - and as you said, Bury St Edmunds is a lovely little town, with beautiful gardens, cafes, and great boutique shopping.
Please come and stay again if you wish. You would all be most welcome!

The children weren't noisy at all, and I'm delighted they enjoyed the nearby village play park. It really is a great asset for such a small village to have.

Do come and stay again one day!

We booked this cottage rather last minute and I can say that it was an absolute find! I was travelling with my partner, 18 month old son and another couple.
The cottage itself is gorgeous and has obviously gone through a full refurbishment extremely recently to a very high standard while keeping the 18th century feel with the wooden floor and exposed beams. The lounge was quiet, with some of the most comfortable sofas I have ever sat on. There was plenty of space to relax as well as have dinner at a six person dining table. The rooms were very comfortable with a great layout (a separate double, and a master room with a interconnecting bunk room), and again very nicely decorated with a homely feel. My young son particularly liked the stuffed owl and bear on the two kids beds! The bathroom was also of high standard with a power shower and bath. There was also a second downstairs toilet. Quality linen and towels were also supplied.
Other amenities included all the kitchen mod-cons like dishwasher, microwave, toaster etc. There is WiFi access, digital TV and a number of books available on the bookshelf.
On top of this, there was a nice outdoor area with BBQ which we took full advantage of! The rockable chairs in the garden, matched with the sofas show that the owner (Sara) really knows her seats! If it hadn't started to rain, we may have been out there all night.
The area itself is quiet (couldn't hear a thing when in the house or garden). There is post office/convenience store and a couple of takeaways a short way down the road. There is also a supermarket approximately 2 miles away for your more substantial needs.
Finally, Sara was extremely friendly and accommodating. We were held up on Friday, and we only arrived after 11pm. She was happy to meet us there at the late hour and show us around. She gave us a personal run down of the house and its amenities as well as leaving us with further written details and welcome note. She even had a beer waiting for us on arrival after our long drive!
I really couldn't recommend this letting more. We will certainly be booking it again in the future and hope that others enjoy it as much as we did.
Thank you so much for your great review and kind words - it's really appreciated.
I'm thrilled you enjoyed the cottage so much. I love the fact that you liked the comfy sofa and outdoor chairs....and also the quietness of it all. Just great!
I really hope you do come and stay again.
